Australian League: Games of November 20

An eight-run inning wasn’t enough for Canberra.  A five-run inning was enough for Sydney.  Two four-run innings were enough for Adelaide.

PERTH 12, CANBERRA 11 IN PERTH

Canberra:  Christian Lopes (Toronto) was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in three.  Mitch Walding (Philadelphia) was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring twice and driving in one.

Perth:  Allan de San Miguel (Baltimore) was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring three times and driving in two.  Matt Kennelly (Atlanta) was 3-for-5 with a home run (his second) and a walk, scoring twice and driving in two.  Jorge Marban (Texas) struck out three in two shutout innings, allowing only a walk.

The game:  Trailing 7-3 after five, Canberra put together an eight-run inning in the sixth to go up 11-7.  Perth scored three in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie it at eleven and won it on Kennelly’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

SYDNEY 5, MELBOURNE 3 IN MELBOURNE

TwinsMarkus Solbach pitched six innings for Sydney, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

Sydney:  Trent Oeltjen (Arizona) was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, his third.  Alex Howe was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.

Melbourne:  Brad Harman (Philadelphia) was 2-for-4 with a home run (his third) and two runs.  Kellin Deglan (Texas) was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Matt Wilson (Baltimore) struck out four in three shutout innings, allowing one hit and two walks.

The game:  A five-run third, in which Oeltjen’s three-run homer was the only hit, gave Sydney all the runs they would need.  Melbourne cut the lead to 5-3 in the sixth but never got the tying run on base.

ADELAIDE 14, BRISBANE 6 IN ADELAIDE

TwinsLogan Wade was 1-for-2 with a run for Brisbane.

Brisbane:  Johnny Field (Tampa Bay) was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his third.  Mitch Nilsson (Cleveland) was 1-for-2 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Daniel Cooper (Seattle) pitched a perfect inning.

Adelaide:  Aaron Miller (Dodgers) was 4-for-5 with a home run (his third) and two doubles, scoring three times and driving in three.  Brandon Dixon (Dodgers) was 2-for-5 with a home run (his second) and a double, scoring twice and driving in three.  Craig Stem (Miami) struck out five in 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks.

The game:  It was 1-1 after two and a half innings, but Adelaide scored three in the third, four in the fourth, four in the fifth, and one in the sixth to build a 13-2 lead.  Brisbane scored four in the ninth to make the final score look a little better.
