Games of May 30

Ryan Eades makes a successful AAA debut.  Fernando Romero has his second consecutive scoreless outing.  Tough games for Fort Myers and Cedar Rapids.

ROCHESTER 6, DURHAM 1 IN DURHAM (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Niko Goodrum hit a two-run homer in the third that gave the Red Wings a 3-0 lead.  The Bulls got their lone run in the fourth, but doubles by ByungHo ParkJohn Ryan Murphy, and Leonardo Reginatto led to a three-run sixth that put the game out of reach.
Ryan Eades made his AAA debut and pitched well, striking out five in five innings while giving up one run on five hits and a walk.  Trevor Hildenberger struck out three in two perfect innings, making his ERA 2.11 with a WHIP of 0.98.  He has struck out 24 and walked 6 in 21,1 innings.  Goodrum was 2-for-4 and the home run was his fifth.  Park was 2-for-4 with two doubles.

DURHAM 4, ROCHESTER 0 IN DURHAM (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

The Red Wings batted last, as this was a makeup of a game rained out in Rochester.  It didn't help.  The Bulls scored on in the first, two in the second, and one in the fourth.  The Red Wings only twice got a man to second base and never got one farther.  They had only two hits and made three errors.
It was a bullpen game for Rochester, as D. J. Baxendale pitched 2.2 innings in his first start of the season.  He gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks with one strikeout.  Kam Mickolio, who is 33 and has been pitching in Japan since 2012, made his Rochester debut with 1.1 scoreless innings.

CHATTANOOGA 11, BIRMINGHAM 0 IN BIRMINGHAM

The Lookouts scored single runs in the first, second, and fifth, got three in the sixth, and put the game away with five in the ninth.  The biggest threat for the Barons came in the seventh, when they had men on first and second with none out and had the bases loaded with two out.
Fernando Romero had his second consecutive strong outing, striking out seven in six shutout innings while giving up just two hits and two walks.  Todd Van Steensel struck out two in two shutout innings to drop his ERA to 1.96.  He has 22 strikeouts in 18.1 innings.  Tyler Jay struck out two in a scoreless inning.  Ryan Strausborger was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring three times.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-5 with a double and a walk and is batting .306.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-5 with a walk and is batting .300.  Levi Michael was 2-for-5.  Ryan Walker lived up to his name, going 1-for-1 with a double and three walks.

BRADENTON 8, FORT MYERS 4 IN FORT MYERS

The Miracle overcame a three-run Marauder first with a four-run second to take a 4-3 lead.  In the fourth, however, Kevin Krause hit a two-run homer and Bradenton led the rest of the way.  The Marauders scored single runs in the fifth, sixth, and eighth to cement the victory.  Fort Myers got only one hit after the second inning.
Lachlan Wells pitched four innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Williams Ramirez pitched a scoreless inning to make his ERA 2.39.  Cam Booser walked five in two-thirds of an inning but was only charged with one run.  Chris Paul, who is batting .351, left the game in the first inning with an injured hand.  I have no word on his condition.

QUAD CITIES 8, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Leading 2-0, the River Bandits scored four in the fifth to put the game out of reach.  The Kernels runs both scored in the seventh on a Jermaine Palacios homer.
Eduardo Del Rosario struck out six in 4.2 innings, but allowed six runs on ten hits and four walks.  Zach Tillery struck out four in two shutout innings.  Max Cordy pitched a scoreless inning.  Palacios went 1-for-4 to make his average .313.  The home run was his seventh.

Games of May 29

An eighth-inning comeback carries the Red Wings.  Clark Beeker pitches well again in a Cedar Rapids loss.

ROCHESTER 5, INDIANAPOLIS 3 IN ROCHESTER

Trailing 3-1 after seven, the Red Wings scored four in the eighth to win the game.  Niko Goodrum had an RBI double, John Ryan Murphy put Rochester ahead with a two-run single, and Bengie Gonzalez brought home an insurance run with a double.  The Indians got a leadoff single in the ninth but did not advance him past first base.  Ex-Twin Danny Ortiz played center for Indianapolis.  He went 1-for-4 and is batting .259.
Aaron Slegers, who would have been a better choice to come up to the Twins than Jason Wheeler except that he's not on the forty-man roster, struck out seven in six innings, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk.  Michael Tonkin struck out three in three shutout innings to drop his ERA to 2.35.  Goodrum was 3-for-4 with a double.  Matt Hague was 2-for-4.  Zach Granite was 0-for-5 and is batting just .178 in his last ten games, a stretch which has resulted in his average dropping from .310 to .244.

KANE COUNTY 3, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN KANE COUNTY

Ben Rortvedt hit a two-run double in the top of the eighth to give the Kernels a 2-1 lead.  In the bottom of the eighth, however, Jose Herrera hit an RBI double to tie it and scored on a Manny Jefferson single to give the Cougars the lead and the win.  Cedar Rapids got a two-out walk in the ninth, but no more.
Clark Beeker had another good game, going six innings and giving up one run on five hits and one walk with five strikeouts.  His ERA is 2.50.  Andrew Vasquez pitched a scoreless inning of relief to make his ERA 1.69.  The Kernels had only three hits in the game.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-4 and is batting .314.

Games of May 28

Not much offense for the Red Wings.  A pair of four-run innings and fine pitching by Felix Jorge carry the Lookouts.  The Miracle gives up a lot of late runs.  A three-run tenth give the Kernels a win.

INDIANAPOLIS 2, ROCHESTER 1 IN ROCHESTER

The Indians scored single runs in the first and third.  The Red Wings got their lone run in the seventh on a Tommy Field RBI single.  They advanced a man to second with two out, but their last eight batters were retired.
David Hurlbut pitched five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Alan Busenitz and Alex Wimmers each pitched two shutout innings, with Busenitz making his ERA 2.08.  Field was 2-for-3.

CHATTANOOGA 9, MONTGOMERY 2 IN CHATTANOOGA

A four-run second and a four-run third decided this game early.  Ryan Walker hit a three-run homer in the third.  The Biscuits scored both of their runs in the eighth.
Felix Jorge pitched seven shutout innings, giving up five hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Walker was 2-for-3 and the home run was his second.  Dan Gamache was 2-for-4 with a double.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-5 with two doubles.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-5 and is batting .303.

CHARLOTTE 6, FORT MYERS 1 IN CHARLOTTE

Chris Paul hit an RBI double in the first.  The 1-0 lead held up until the fifth, when back-to-back homers by Ryan Boldt and Brandon Lowe put the Stone Crabs ahead.  They added two more in the sixth and got single runs in the seventh and eighth.  The Miracle only once got a man to third base after the first inning.
David Fischer pitched five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Chris Paul was 1-for-2 with two walks and is batting .351.  Justin Hazard made his 2017 debut and went 0-for-4.

CEDAR RAPIDS 5, KANE COUNTY 2 IN KANE COUNTY (10 INNINGS)

Aaron Whitefield doubled in a run in the fifth to tie the score at 2-2.  It stayed there until the tenth.  With one out, a hit batsman and a balk put a man on second.  With two out, an intentional walk and an accidental walk loaded the bases, a hit batsman put the Kernels ahead, and Ariel Montesino's two-run single made it 5-2.  The Cougars brought the tying run to bat with two out in the tenth, but a strikeout ended the game.
Domenick Carlini pitched five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Colton Davis pitched two perfect innings to make his ERA 2.05.  Alex Robinson pitched a scoreless inning.  Tom Hackimer struck out three in two shutout innings to make his ERA 1.50.  He has 28 strikeouts and 3 walks in 24 innings.  Whitefield was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Lewin Diaz was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk.

Games of May 27

A strange walkoff win for the Red Wings.  Yohan Pino is back in the Twins organization for the Lookouts.  A Miracle rally falls short.  An excellent game by Sean Poppen.

ROCHESTER 3, INDIANAPOLIS 2 IN ROCHESTER (12 INNINGS)

In the ninth, Zack Granite reached on an error, went from first to third on a ground out to shortstop, and scored on a Daniel Palka sacrifice fly.  In the twelfth, a single, a walk, and a single loaded the bases with one out.  I'm not sure quite how the winning run scored, so I'll quote what the play-by-play says:  "Zack Granite lines into a force out, center fielder Austin Meadows to third baseman Erich Weiss. Leonardo Reginatto scores. John Ryan Murphy out at 3rd. Engelb Vielma to 2nd. Zack Granite to 1st."  As far as I can tell, Granite lined what appeared to be a clean single to right-center to score the winning run.  Murphy, however, pulled a Fred Merkle and did not touch third.  For some reason, the Indians decided to go ahead and get the force out, even though it was meaningless, simply to deprive Granite of a hit.
Nik Turley struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and no walks.  Trevor Hildenberger struck out five in 2.2 scoreless innings, making his ERA 2.33.  Buddy Boshers pitched 1.1 scoreless innings.  Drew Rucinski pitched three shutout innings to make his ERA 2.95.  Niko Goodrum was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a walk.  Daniel Palka was 3-for-4 with a walk.  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-6 to make his average .300.

MONTGOMERY 3, CHATTANOOGA 0 IN CHATTANOOGA

Joe McCarthy doubled and scored in the second and Grant Kay hit a two-run double in the eighth.  The Lookouts put a man on base in the first inning but did not do so again.  Chattanooga had six hits and four walks but went 0-for-9 with men in scoring position.
Yohan Pino, back in the Twins organization, made his 2017 debut with three innings, giving up one run on two hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Matt Tracy pitched the other six innings, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-4 with a walk to make his average .305.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-5 to make his average .301.

CHARLOTTE 4, FORT MYERS 2 IN CHARLOTTE

The Stone Crabs scored one in the first and two in the second to go ahead 3-0.  It was 4-0 before the Miracle finally got on the board with one in the seventh.  They got one more in the ninth and had men on first and third with two out, but a strikeout ended the game.
Randy LeBlanc pitched six innings, giving up four runs on nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Anthony McIver pitched two shutout innings to make his ERA 2.60,  Brian Navaretto was 2-for-4.  Sean Miller was 2-for-5.  Chris Paul was 1-for-3 to make his average .349.

CEDAR RAPIDS 6, KANE COUNTY 0 IN KANE COUNTY

RBI singles by Travis Blankenhorn and Caleb Hamilton put the Kernels up 2-0 in the first and they led all the way.  The Cougars biggest threat came in the eighth, when two one-out singles and a two-out walk loaded the bases.  A fly to center ended the inning.
Sean Poppen pitched seven shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk with six strikeouts.  His ERA is 2.35.  Zach Tillery and Hector Lujan each pitched a scoreless inning, with Lujan making his ERA 2.21.  Hank Morrison, who made his season debut last Thursday, went 2-for-3 with a home run to make his average .333.  Blankenhorn was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-4 with a walk to make his average .316.

Games of May 26

A rough outing for Nick Tepesch.  Stephen Gonsalves takes a big step forward.  An eight-run inning for Fort Myers.  A Kernels comeback falls short.

INDIANAPOLIS 11, ROCHESTER 6 IN ROCHESTER

Leading 4-2 after three, the Indians scored seven runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach.  They had four doubles in the inning.
Nick Tepesch lasted 3.1 innings, allowing nine runs on seven hits and two walks.  He did get five strikeouts.  Kevin Chapman pitched two shutout innings and Michael Tonkin struck out two in a scoreless inning.  Engelb Vielma was 3-for-4 with a double.  Daniel Palka was 2-for-5 with a home run, his eighth.  Matt Hague was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Mitch Garver was 2-for-5.  Niko Goodrum hit a home run, his fourth.

CHATTANOOGA 3, MONTGOMERY 2 IN CHATTANOOGA

Grant Kay's RBI single in the seventh tied it 2-2, but the Lookouts took the lead in the eighth when Nick Gordon walked, took second on a ground out, and scored from second on a strikeout/wild pitch.  The Biscuits went down in order in the ninth.
Stephen Gonsalves, in only his second start of the season, struck out seven in seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits and no walks.  Todd Van Steensel and Mason Melotakis each pitched a scoreless inning, lowering their ERAs to 2.20 and 2.37, respectively.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-3 with a walk to make his average .303.  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-4 to make his average .307.

FORT MYERS 17, CHARLOTTE 1 IN CHARLOTTE

An eight-run second inning put this one away early.  A hit batsman and two walks loaded the bases with none out.  Four singles, a walk, a double, and an error produced the runs.  The Miracle added five more in the third to make it a real rout.
Dereck Rodriguez pitched five innings, giving up one run on three hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  He threw just 61 pitches--no word on whether there was an injury or if he was just removed to save innings in a laugher.  Michael Theofanopoulos pitched three shutout innings of relief.  Nick Anderson struck out three in a scoreless inning to make his ERA 0.93.  He has 20 strikeouts and 3 walks in 19.1 innings.  Sean Miller was 4-for-6.  Chris Paul was 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs to make his average .350.  Nelson Molina was 3-for-5 with a walk.  Alex Perez was 2-for-4 with two walks.  Max Murphy was 2-for-7.  Tanner English hit a home run, his second.

KANE COUNTY 2, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN KANE COUNTY

The Cougars scored single runs in the first and third.  The Kernels did not break through until the ninth, when Jaylin Davis hit a two-run double and scored on a Travis Blankenhorn single.  A Brandon Lopez single put men on first and second, but a ground out ended the game.
Max Cordy made his second start after spending most of the season in the bullpen.  He pitched three innings, giving up two unearned runs on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.  I don't know if he's being stretched out to stay in the rotation or if they've just needed to go with a couple of bullpen games.  Ryan Mason and Patrick McGuff each made their 2017 debut and each was successful, with Mason striking out three in three shutout innings and McGuff striking out two in two shutout innings.  Blankenhorn was 2-for-4.  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-4 and is batting .317.

Games of May 25

It may be time to move some people up from Chattanooga.  The Miracle lose two one-run games despite a big day from Max Murphy.  Lewis Thorpe takes another step on the comeback trail.  Jaylin Davis hits his eleventh homer.
DURHAM AT ROCHESTER
Rained out.
CHATTANOOGA 5, MONTGOMERY 2 IN CHATTANOOGA
The Biscuits scored in the top of the first, but the Lookouts tied it in the bottom of the first on a LaMonte Wade RBI double, took the lead on a sacrifice fly, and held the lead the rest of the game.  They also scored single runs in the second, fifth, and seventh.  Montgomery got a run in the eighth and had the tying run up to bat with two out, but that was as close as they got.
Ryan Eades continues to pitch well since being moved into the starting rotation.  He went 5.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits and three walks with no strikeouts.  Randy Rosario struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings.  His ERA is 1.90, his WHIP is 0.85, and he has struck out 20 in 23.2 innings.  Tyler Jay made his season debut, giving up one run on one hit and two walks in one inning.  John Curtiss struck out three in a scoreless inning, keeping his ERA at zero.  He has struck out 25 in 17.2 innings.  Edgar Corcino was 3-for-3 with a walk and is batting .315.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and is batting .303.
DUNEDIN 5, FORT MYERS 4 IN DUNEDIN (GAME 1--9 INNINGS)
The Miracle led 4-2 after five, but the Blue Jays scored twice in the sixth on just one hit, getting the benefit of two walks, a wild pitch, and two passed balls, to send the game to extra innings.  Dunedin loaded the bases in the seventh and Fort Myers did the same in the eighth, but neither team scored.  The Blue Jays broke through in the ninth, with Juan Kelly scoring from first on a Nash Knight double to win the game.  Fort Myers out-hit Dunedin 15-8.  The went 7-for-20 with men in scoring position, but still managed to strand thirteen men.  Cavan Biggio, son of Craig, played second base for the Blue Jays and was 0-for-4.  J. A. Happ, on a rehab assignment, started for Dunedin and pitched three innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and no walks with three strikeouts.
Brady Anderson pitched five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Alex Muren struck out four in two shutout innings to drop his ERA to 0.87.  Max Murphy was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a walk.  Bradley Strong was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk and is batting .308.  Alex Perez was also 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.  Nelson Molina was 2-for-4.  Chris Paul was 2-for-5 with a triple and is batting .337.  Sean Miller was 2-for-5.  Rafael P. Valera, normally an outfielder, caught the entire game.  I don't know why.
DUNEDIN 2, FORT MYERS 1 IN DUNEDIN (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)
The Blue Jays got single runs in the fourth and fifth.  The Miracle scored on a ground out in the sixth.  They did not get the tying run past first base.
Lewis Thorpe, who appears to still be on a pitch count, struck out six in four innings and gave up one run on three hits and two walks.  Chris Paul was 2-for-3, raising his average to .343.  Max Murphy was also 2-for-3.  Bradley Strong was 1-for-3 to raise his average to .309.  Tanner English was 1-for-3 and is batting .300.
CEDAR RAPIDS 9, CLINTON 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS
The Kernels broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the fifth.  Caleb Hamilton drove in a run with a double, Aaron Whitefield and Travis Blankenhorn each had RBI singles, and Jaylin Davis brought home two with a single.  Cedar Rapids added two more in the seventh on a two-run homer by Lewin Diaz.
Eduardo Del Rosario made his second consecutive good start, striking out nine in six innings while giving up two runs on three hits and three walks.  Colton DavisAndrew Vasquez, and Logan Lombana each pitched a scoreless inning, with Davis now having an ERA of 2.25 and Vasquez and ERA of 1.77.  Jaylin Davis was 3-for-4 with a home run, his eleventh, and three RBIs.  Diaz was 2-for-4 and the home run was his seventh.  Brandon Lopez was 2-for-4.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-4 and is batting .324.

Games of May 24

A good start by Aaron Slegers goes for nothing, as the bullpen lets one get away.  Fernando Romero pitched very well.  Clark Beeker continues to pitch well.
DURHAM 6, ROCHESTER 5 IN ROCHESTER
RBI doubles by Matt HagueNiko Goodrum. and Mitch Garver, all in the sixth inning, put the Red Wings up 4-2.  They added another run in the seventh and appeared to be in good shape, leading 5-2.  In the eighth, however, a single, a double, and a single made it 5-4 and Shane Peterson hit a two-out two-run homer to give the Bulls the lead.  Rochester had men on first and third with none out in the eighth, but a line out and a double play ended the inning.
Aaron Slegers made his third consecutive solid start, going six innings and giving up two runs on six hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  The only relief pitcher of four to go unscathed was Alex Wimmers, who pitched a perfect ninth.  Garver was 3-for-4, hitting his third home run in addition to the double.  ByungHo Park was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Hague was 2-for-5 with a double.
CHATTANOOGA 2, MONTGOMERY 0 IN CHATTANOOGA
All the runs came in the sixth.  With one out, Ryan Walker singled, Nick Gordon doubled, and Edgar Corcino brought them both home with a single.  The Biscuits got a man to third in the fifth and again in the ninth, both times with two out.
Fernando Romero made his best start in a month, pitching six innings and giving up three hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Luke Bard struck out four in two shutout innings.  John Curtiss struck out two in a scoreless inning to keep his ERA at zero. He has struck out 22 and walked 9 in 16.2 innings.  Gordon was 1-for-4 and is batting .304.  Corcino was 1-for-3 and is batting .301.
FORT MYERS AT DUNEDIN

CLINTON 3, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS
Aaron Whitefield's two-run triple in the seventh tied the score 2-2.  In the ninth, though, the LumberKings loaded the bases with one out.  Gareth Morgan hit a ground ball to short but the Kernels could not turn the double play, allowing the go-ahead run to score.  Cedar Rapids put men on first and second with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but a strikeout and a line out ended the game.
Clark Beeker continues to pitch well, throwing six innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks with two strikeouts.  Brandon Lopez was 3-for-4 with a double.  Ariel Montesino was 2-for-5.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-4 and is batting .326.

Games of May 23

An excellent start by Jason Wheeler.  Toronto rehabbers take care of the Miracle.  Jaylin Davis hits his tenth homer for the Kernels.
ROCHESTER 4, DURHAM 0 IN ROCHESTER
All the runs scored in the second inning.  It opened with singles by ByungHo Park and Matt Hague.  A one-out double by J. B. Shuck made it 2-0.  A two-out double by Engelb Vielma made it 3-0 and Zack Granite followed with a single to make it 4-0.  The only time the Bulls got a man past first was in the eighth, when a single and a double put men on second and third with none out.  A line drive double play and a foul out ended the inning.
Jason Wheeler made his best start of the season, striking out nine in seven innings while giving up five hits and walking none.  Trevor Hildenberger pitched two shutout innings of relief to drop his ERA to 2.70.  Shuck was 2-for-3 with two doubles.  Vielma was 2-for-3 with a double.
Each team had a player in the lineup named "Field", Tommy for the Red Wings and Johnny for the Bulls.  Neither of them made an error.  As far as I could tell, they are not related.
CHATTANOOGA LOOKOUTS
No game scheduled.
DUNEDIN 3, FORT MYERS 2 IN DUNEDIN
It was a bit of an unfair fight, as Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki were both playing for Dunedin on a rehab assignment.  Donaldson was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI and Tulowitzki hit a home run.
The Blue Jays scored single runs in the first, second, and fifth to take a 3-0 lead.  Zander Weil hit a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 3-2.  The Miracle threatened in the ninth, when a single and an error put men on first and second with none out.  A force out and a line drive double play ended the game.
Lachlan Wells pitched five innings, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Cam Booser made his 2017 debut with two shutout innings, giving up just two walks.  Sam Clay pitched a scoreless inning to make his ERA 2.16.  Weil was 2-for-3 and the home run was his sixth.  Kevin Garcia was 1-for-4 and is batting .304.  Tanner English was 1-for-4 and is batting .303.
CLINTON 7, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS
No big inning, but the LumberKings scored one in the first and two in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings.  The Kernels got their lone run in the fourth on a Jaylin Davis homer.  Cedar Rapids had nine hits but went 1-for-10 with men in scoring position.
Dominick Carlini got through five innings but allowed seven runs on eleven hits and one walk with two strikeouts.  Zach Tillery and Max Cordy each struck out two in two shutout innings.  Davis was 2-for-4 and the home run was his tenth.  Caleb Hamilton was 2-for-3.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-4 and is batting .327.

Games of May 22

John Curtiss has still not given up a run.  The Miracle score early and often.  A walkoff homer by Jermaine Palacios gives the Kernels a win.
ROCHESTER RED WINGS
No game scheduled.
CHATTANOOGA 4, BILOXI 3 IN BILOXI
The Lookouts once again let a lead get away.  Jonathan Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the third to give Chattanooga a 3-0 lead, but the Shuckers scored once in the third and got a two-run single from Clint Coulter in the seventh to tie it 3-3.  This time, thought, it was the Lookouts who got the go-ahead run.  In the eighth, a single, a wild pitch, a walk, a bunt, an intentional walk, and an accidental walk put Chattanooga up 4-3.  Biloxi had men on first and third in the eighth, but their last four batters were retired.
Felix Jorge went seven innings for the Lookouts, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Mason Melotakis struck out three in a scoreless inning, dropping his ERA to 2.50, and John Curtiss kept his ERA at zero with a scoreless inning.  Curtiss has now pitched 15.2 innings in fourteen games, giving up nine hits and nine walks with twenty strikeouts.  T. J. White was 2-for-4.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-3 with a walk and is batting .305.  LaMonte Wade was 0-for-4 and is batting .302.  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-3 and is batting .300.  The home run by Rodriguez was his fifth.
FORT MYERS 13, DUNEDIN 6 IN DUNEDIN
The Miracle scored five in the second and three in the third to take an 8-0 lead on the way to an easy win.  They led 10-1 before a five-run eighth made the final score look better.  Fort Myers rounded out the scoring with three in the ninth.
David Fischer struck out five in 5.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits but six walks.  Nick Anderson pitched a scoreless inning to drop his ERA to 0.98.  Kevin Garcia was 3-for-5 with a walk and is batting .308.  Sean Miller was also 3-for-5 with a walk.  Alex Perez was 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs.  Max Murphy was 2-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring three times and driving in four.  Zander Weil was 2-for-6 with a home run, his fifth.  Chris Paul was 0-for-3 and is batting .335.  Tanner English was 0-for-4 with a walk and is batting .310.
CEDAR RAPIDS 6, CLINTON 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (12 INNINGS)
The LumberKings led 3-2 after two innings.  There was no more scoring until the seventh, when Aaron Whitefield walked and scored on a triple by Christian Cavaness.  The Kernels threatened in the tenth, putting men on first and third before a double play ended the inning.  In the twelfth, Jermaine Palacios hit a three-run homer to end the game.
Sean Poppen struck out five in five innings, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks.  Colton Davis pitched two shutout innings to make his ERA 2.37.  Andrew Vasquez pitched three shutout inning to make his ERA 1.86,  Tom Hackimer struck out three in two perfect innings to make his ERA 1.64.  Hackimer has 25 strikeouts and just 2 walks in 22 innings.  Cavaness was 3-for-5 with a walk in addition to the triple.  Whitefield was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Lewin Diaz and Ben Rortvedt were each 2-for-5.  Palacios was 2-for-6 with a double in addition to the walkoff homer, which was his sixth.  He is batting .329.

Games of May 21

ByungHo Park is hitting some home runs, although his average is still poor.  Extra innings are unkind to Twins affiliates.  So are early leads.  Falling behind early didn't seem to help, either, as the Twins get swept.
SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 5, ROCHESTER 4 IN SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE (11 INNINGS)
No, it's not a reprint from yesterday.  Same score, same number of innings, same result.  The Red Wings scored four in the third, highlighted by back-to-back home runs by ByungHo Park and Tommy Field, to take a 4-3 lead.  The RailRiders tied it with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.  Neither team threatened until the bottom of the eleventh.  With one out, a walk and a single put men on first and third and a squeeze bunt brought home the winning run.
Nik Turley allowed three runs in the first two innings but pitched well after that.  For the game he went five innings, giving up three runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Alan Busenitz struck out two in two shutout innings, lowering his ERA to 2.00.  Drew Rucinski struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, dropping his ERA to 2.40.  Field was 3-for-5 with his fourth homer.  Park's homer was his third.  He is batting .226.
BILOXI 5, CHATTANOOGA 4 IN BILOXI (10 INNINGS)
The Lookouts led 4-0 after five.  They did very little on offense after that, however, and the Shuckers scored once in the sixth and got three in the seventh to tie it 4-4.  With one out in the tenth, two singles and a hit batsman loaded the bases and Angel Ortega singled home the winning run.
Matt Tracy pitched well for six innings, but his line is 6.2 innings, four runs, seven hits, and one walk with five strikeouts.  Nick Burdi pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to drop his ERA to 0.53.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a walk and is batting .305.  Edgar Corcino was 2-for-5 and is batting .307.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk and is batting .312.
BRADENTON 6, FORT MYERS 5 IN FORT MYERS
Another blown lead, as the Miracle led 5-1 after two.  They put a man on third in the fourth, fifth, and seventh, but never scored again.  The Marauders got one in the third and scored three in the fourth to tie it, with the final two runs scoring on a triple by Ke'Bryan Hayes.  There was no more scoring until the eighth when Hayes struck again, singling home the go-ahead run.  Fort Myers did not get a man past first base after that.
Cody Stashak, who had pitched well in his last three starts, did not do so this day, going four innings and allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Anthony McIver pitched two shutout innings to drop his ERA to 2.52.  Williams Ramirez struck out two in a scoreless inning to make his ERA 1.61.  He has 26 strikeouts in 22.1 innings.  Chris Paul was 2-for-4 with a home run (his third), a double, and a walk and is batting .341.  Bradley Strong was 2-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Zander Weil was 2-for-5 with a double.
WISCONSIN 12, CEDAR RAPIDS 7 IN WISCONSIN
It wasn't as close as it sounds.  The Timber Rattlers led 6-0 after three and 12-2 after five.  The Kernels got one in the sixth and four in the seventh but never really got back into the game.
Tyler Beardsley pitched four innings, allowing nine runs on twelve hits and no walks with one strikeout.  Zach Tillery made his 2017 debut and may have wished he hadn't--he pitched one-third of an inning and allowed three runs on one hit and five walks.  Hector Lujan pitched 1.2 perfect innings with two strikeouts to drop his ERA to 2.41.  Travis Blankenhorn was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth), a double, and three RBIs.  Jaylin Davis was 2-for-4 with a double.  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-4 and is batting .329.  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-2 with a home run (his sixth) and two walks.

Games of May 20

Bases on balls hurt the Red Wings.  The Lookouts lose a rain-shortened game.  The Miracle win in extra inning.  An excellent game by Eduardo Del Rosario.

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 5, ROCHESTER 4 IN SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE (11 INNINGS)

The RailRiders led 4-1 after two innings.  ByungHo Park hit a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 4-3 and Daniel Palka's RBI single tied it in the seventh.  It remained tied until the bottom of the eleventh.  A one-out walk followed by a ground out put a man on second with two out.  An intentional walk was followed by an accidental walk to load the bases, and Mark Payton singled home the winning run off D. J. Baxendale, who was in his third inning of work.  Ex-Twin J. R. Graham pitched a third of an inning, giving up an unearned run on no hits and two walks.  His ERA is 3.38 in eight AAA innings.
Nick Tepesch did well after the second inning.  He went six innings and gave up four runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Alex Wimmers struck out three in two shutout innings.  Niko Goodrum was 2-for-5 with two doubles.  Palka was 2-for-5 with a double.  The home run was Park's second.

BILOXI 2, CHATTANOOGA 0 IN BILOXI (4 1/2 INNINGS--RAIN)

Angel Ortega hit a two-run homer in the fourth, and that was it.  It hardly seems fair to lose again when you only get five times at-bat, but it's been the rule forever, so that's the way it goes.
Stephen Gonsalves made his season debut and pitched four innings, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  He did all the pitching for the Lookouts, but as Randy LeBlanc had been announced as a reliever for the fifth, it appears Gonsalves does not get a complete game.  Dan Rohlfing had two of the three Chattanooga hits, going 2-for-2.  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-2 and is batting .303.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-2 and is batting .300.

FORT MYERS 9, BRADENTON 8 IN FORT MYERS (10 INNINGS)

The Miracle led 4-3 after five.  The Marauders scored five in the top of the sixth, only to see Fort Myers respond with four in the bottom of the sixth to tie it 8-8.  Bradenton put men on second and third with one out in the tenth, but the go-ahead run was thrown out trying to score on an infield grounder and the next batter struck out.  In the bottom of the tenth, singles by Sean Miller and Bradley Strong put men on first and third with one out.  Chris Paul then singled to center to bring home the winning run.
Dereck Rodriguez struck out seven in five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks.  Williams Ramirez pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 1.69.  Sam Clay struck out three in two shutout innings to make his ERA 2.25.  Miller was 3-for-5 and Strong was 3-for-6.  Tanner English was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs and is batting .400.  Paul was 3-for-4 with a double, two walks, and three RBIs and is batting .337.  Zander Weil was 1-for-2 with a home run (his fourth) and three walks.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, WISCONSIN 2 IN WISCONSIN

Leading 1-0, the Kernels scored three in the seventh take control of the game.  Cedar Rapids had only two hits in the inning, which also featured two wild pitches, a walk, a hit batsman, and an error.  The Timber Rattlers got a two-out two-run double in the eighth to cut the margin to 4-2, but their last four batters were retired.
Eduardo Del Rosario, who had struggled in his last three starts, was back on track in this one, striking out eight in eight innings while giving up two runs on five hits and two walks.  Tom Hackimer pitched a perfect ninth to lower his ERA to 1.80.  Ben Rortvedt was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  He is 4-for-10 in his last three starts, raising his average 32 points to .140.  Christian Cavaness was 2-for-4.  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-4 and is batting .325.

Games of May 19

The good Aaron Slegers showed up for the Red Wings.  The Lookouts get shutout.  A triumphant return for Lewis Thorpe.  A big innings drops the Kernels.
ROCHESTER 2, SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 1 IN SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE
Zack Granite homered in the fourth and a sacrifice fly made it 2-0 in the seventh.  The RailRiders got the tying run to second with two out, but a strikeout ended the game.
The Red Wings saw the good Aaron Slegers for the second straight game, as he went 8.1 innings and gave up one run on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Drew Rucinski retired the last two batters to get the save.  Rochester had only four hits.  Granite was 1-for-4 and is batting .300.
BILOXI 4, CHATTANOOGA 0 IN BILOXI
The Shuckers scored single runs in the first, third, fourth, and sixth.  The Lookouts did not get a hit until the fourth and did not get a man to third until the ninth, when they loaded the bases with one out.  A strikeout and a fly out ended the game.
Ryan Eades has apparently moved into the rotation after being used in relief the first month of the season.  He struck out five in five innings but allowed three runs on six hits and two walks.  Randy Rosario gave up an unearned run in two innings to make his ERA 2.01.  Nick Burdi pitched a perfect ninth and has an ERA of 0.57.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4 and is batting .314.  T. J. White was 0-for-3 and is batting .313.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-4 and is batting .304.
FORT MYERS 7, BRADENTON 1 IN FORT MYERS
A four-run fifth carried the Miracle to its sixth straight win.  With the score tied 1-1, Rafael P. Valera led off the fifth with a home run.  A run scored later in the inning on a fielder's choice and Tanner English singled home two.  Fort Myers added two in the eighth on a single by Nelson Molina.
Lewis Thorpe appeared in his first game since 2014.  He pitched four innings, giving up one run on two hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Anthony McIver pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to 2.74, Alex Muren pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, dropping his ERA to 1.42, and Nick Anderson pitched a scoreless inning to make his ERA 1.04.  English was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and is batting .375.  Chris Paul was 1-for-2 with a walk and is batting .333.
WISCONSIN 9, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN WISCONSIN
Already leading 3-1, the Timber Rattlers scored six in the eighth to put the game out of reach.  They had only two hits in the inning, both singles, but got the benefit of three walks, two hit batsmen, and two errors.  The Kernels scored single runs in the third and ninth and did not threaten in any other inning.
Clark Beeker was hurt by a couple of gopher balls but pitched well otherwise, going seven innings and giving up three runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts.  His ERA is 2.76.  The big inning came off Max Cordy, whose ERA went from 3.94 to 6.06.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-4 with a home run, his fifth, and is batting .333.

Games of May 18

The Red Wings overcome a big early deficit.  A big inning sinks the Lookouts.  The Miracle single their way to a win.  A big day for Jaylin Davis carries the Kernels.
ROCHESTER 10, LEHIGH VALLEY 8 IN ROCHESTER
The Red Wings didn't make it easy.  They surrendered seven runs to the IronPigs in the second inning, four of them coming on a rally-killing grand slam by Rhys Hopkins, to fall behind 7-1.  Not a problem, as Rochester scored six in the fourth to tie it.  Matt Hague homered and Mitch Garver had a two-run single in the inning.  They took the lead with three in the fifth, with two scoring on a Zack Granite single.  Lehigh Valley got the tying run on base with one out in the ninth, but their last two batters were retired.
Jason Wheeler recovered from the second inning to get through five, giving up seven runs on eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts.  Buddy Boshers pitched three innings, giving up one run on one hit with three strikeouts.  Trevor Hildenberger struck out two in a scoreless inning.  Hague was 3-for-5 with a double in addition to his fourth home run.  Tommy Field was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk.  J. B. Shuck was 2-for-3 with a double.  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-5.  Daniel Palka hit a home run, his seventh.  Granite was 1-for-4 with three RBIs and is batting .304.
BILOXI 9, CHATTANOOGA 3 IN BILOXI
Already ahead 2-1, the Shuckers scored five in the fifth to put the game out of reach.  They started the inning with a walk, a hit batsman, and another walk, then got five consecutive singles.  The Lookouts got two in the eighth but never threatened to get back into the game.
Fernando Romero, who has been hot and cold all year, was cold in this game, going 4.1 innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts.  Raul Fernandez struck out five in two shutout innings of relief.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-4.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-4 with a walk and is batting .312.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-3 with a walk and is batting .308.  T. J. White was 1-for-2 and is batting .385.
FORT MYERS 5, CLEARWATER 2 IN FORT MYERS
Trailing 2-1 through four, the Miracle scored three in the fifth to take the lead on their way to their fifth straight win.  Max Murphy had a two-run single and Bradley Strong had a one-run single in the inning.  Tanner English singled home an insurance run in the eighth.
Brady Anderson pitched 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  He threw seventy pitches in his first start of the season.  Michael Theofanopoulos pitched 2.2 scoreless innings.  Williams Ramirez pitched a scoreless inning to drop his ERA to 1.80 and Sam Clay pitched a scoreless inning to make his ERA 2.53.  Strong and Kevin Garcia were each 2-for-4.  Chris Paul was 1-for-3 with a walk and is batting .331.  English was 1-for-4 and is batting .308.
CEDAR RAPIDS 6, WISCONSIN 3 IN WISCONSIN
Jaylin Davis hit a two-run homer in the fourth to give the Kernels a 3-1 lead.  Davis led off the sixth with a double that started a three-run rally and made it 6-1.  In the bottom of the ninth, the Timber Rattlers scored two and had the tying run up to bat with two out, but Monte Harrison was called out on strikes to end the game.  Harrison was then ejected from a game that was already over, an action which would appear to be primarily symbolic.
Domenick Carlini had his best game of the season, going six innings and giving up one run on six hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  Colton Davis pitched two shutout innings to lower his ERA to 2.65.  Davis was 3-for-5 and hit two home runs, his eighth and ninth.  Brandon Lopez was 2-for-4.

Games of May 17

The Red Wings blow the lead, as ex-Twins lead a comeback.  The Lookouts blow a lead, as home runs do them in.  Lachlan Wells throws a rare nine-inning complete game for the Miracle.  Lots of offense for the Kernels.
LEHIGH VALLEY 11, ROCHESTER 8 IN ROCHESTER (11 INNINGS)
The Red Wings had leads of 4-1 and 8-4, but could not hold them.  Rhys Hoskins homered in the eighth to tie it 8-8.  In the eleventh, two one-out singles put men on first and second, a single-plus-error by J. P. Crawford scored both of them, and Crawford scored on a ground out.  The Red Wings had gotten the go-ahead run to third in both the eighth and the tenth but did not score.  Ex-Twin Pedro Florimon was 5-for-5 with a double and three runs, raising his average from .263 to .349.  Ex-Twin Casey Fien pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and has an ERA of zero in 2.1 innings for the IronPigs.
David Hurlbut has pitched very well this year but not this day, going only 3.2 innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Alan Busenitz pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts, dropping his ERA to 2.25.  He has 21 strikeouts in 16 innings.  ByungHo Park had his first good game since coming off the disabled list, going 3-for-4 with a double.  J. B. Shuck was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk.  John Ryan Murphy was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer, his third.  Matt Hague and Daniel Palka were each 2-for-5 with a double.  Zack Granite was 1-for-5 with a walk and is batting .310.  Engelb Vielma was 0-for-5 to drop his average to .091.
BIRMINGHAM 8, CHATTANOOGA 6 IN CHATTANOOGA
The Lookouts led 6-2, but a six-run seventh gave the game to the Barons.  Felix Jorge pitched well for six innings, but with one out in the seventh gave up a walk, a single, and another walk to load the bases.  Mason Melotakis came in and gave up a grand slam to Hunter Jones to tie the game.  With two out in the inning, Jake Peter hit a two-run homer to give Birmingham the lead.  Chattanooga did not get a hit after scoring four runs in the fourth inning.
For the game, Jorge pitched 6.1 innings and was charged with five runs on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts.  John Curtiss pitched a scoreless inning to keep his ERA at zero through 14.2 innings.  He has 19 strikeouts.  T. J. White led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, and is batting .364.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk and is batting .320.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-3 with a walk and is batting .307.  LaMonte Wade was 0-for-4 and is batting .316.  Levi Michael hit a home run.
FORT MYERS 3, CLEARWATER 1 IN FORT MYERS
Daniel Kihle hit a three-run homer in the second to give the Miracle a 3-1 lead and the scoring ended there.  The Threshers got a man to third in the third but never again.  They had only four hits in the game.
Lachlan Wells pitched a nine-inning complete game, a rarity at any minor league level, much less Class A.  He gave up one run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts and used just ninety pitches.  Chris Paul was 2-for-4 and is batting .331.  Tanner English was 1-for-3 with a walk to keep his average at .333.  Kihle's home run was his third.
CEDAR RAPIDS 7, PEORIA 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS
The Kernels scored five in the second to take a 7-3 lead and controlled the game the rest of the way.  Jermaine Palacios hit a three-run homer and Mitchell Kranson hit a solo homer in the inning.  The Chiefs scored on in the seventh and had the bases loaded with two out, but a strikeout ended the threat.
Sean Poppen pitched six innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts.  His ERA is 2.38.  Alex Robinson struck out four in two shutout innings.  Kranson was 3-for-4 with a double in addition to his third homer.  Palacios was 3-for-4 with a double in addition to his fourth homer and is batting .336.  Brandon Lopez was 3-for-4 with a double.  Aaron Whitefield was 3-for-5.  Ben Rortvedt was 2-for-4.  Lewin Diaz hit a home run, his fifth.
