Games of January 30

Doubleheaders in the playoffs are cool.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  None.
AGUILAS 5, LICEY 2 AT AGUILAS (GAME 1)
Junior Lake delivered a two-out two-run single in the fourth to break a 2-2 tie.  Lake was 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs.  Richelson Pena pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk and striking out two.
The Aguilas lead the series 3-2.
LICEY 4, AGUILAS 3 AT AGUILAS (GAME 2)
Licey scored two in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.  The Aguilas scored one in the sixth and one in the eighth and had the tying run on second.  For Licey, Juan Francisco hit a home run.  Lisalverto Bonilla pitched six innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk and striking out three.
Licey ties the series 3-3.

AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE

Games of January 29

The Dominican League and the Australian League are the only ones which are still in their playoffs.  The Caribbean Series starts February 2.

Twins:  None.
LICEY 10, AGUILAS 1 IN LICEY
Licey scored one in the first, two in the second, and three in the third to build a 6-0 lead.  Yermin Mercedes was 2-for-3 with a home run.  Jair Jurrjens pitched 6.1 innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits and a walk and striking out one.  The Aguilas had three hits, all singles.
Licey ties the series 2-2.

AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE

Games of January 28

With the end of the Mexican League series, we only have the Dominican League and the Australian League left.  The Caribbean Series is scheduled to start February 1.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

CULIACAN 6, NAVOJOA 4 IN NAVOJOA (12 INNINGS)
Navojoa led 3-2 and 4-3. Culiacan got a sacrifice fly in the ninth to tie it 4-4. In the twelfth, Alfredo Amezaga singled home the lead run and a sacrifice fly brought in an insurance run. Joey Meneses was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second of the series. For Navojoa, Jesus Castillo was 2-for-5 with two home runs, his second and third of the series, and three RBIs. Navojoa used eleven pitchers in the game, six of them for less than an inning and four of them for just one batter.
Navojoa wins the Mexican League Championship, defeating Culiacan four games to three.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

LICEY AT AGUILAS
Rained out.
The Caribbean Series is scheduled to being February 1, but the Dominican League is having a heck of a time getting its playoff series in.

AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE

CANBERRA AT BRISBANE
Cancelled.
The playoffs start February 2.  The matchups will be Perth v. Canberra and Brisbane v. Melbourne.  The semi-finals are best-of-three, as are the finals.

A big day for Logan Wade.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Willians Astudillo (Anzoategui) was 1-for-4.
ANZOATEGUI 4, LARA 0 IN LARA
Luis Jimenez hit a grand slam in the first inning and that was all Anzoategui needed.  Freddy Garcia pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and a walk and striking out five.  Lara had just four hits, all singles.
Anzoategui wins the Venezuelan League championship, defeating Lara four games to two.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

NAVOJOA 4, CULIACAN 3 IN NAVOJOA
Sebastian Elizalde hit a two-run single in a three-run eighth that gave Culiacan a 3-2 lead.  In the ninth, Paul Leon homered to tie it and Randy Arozarena singled home the winning run.  For Navojoa, Leon's homer was his second of the series.  Alejandro Gonzalez hit a home run, his second of the series.  Eddie Gamboa pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and striking out four.  For Culiacan, Fernando Perez was 2-for-3 with a home run.  Edgar Gonzalez pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks and striking out three.
Navojoa ties the series 3-3.

Twins:  Aaron Whitefield (Brisbane) was 2-for-7 with a run.  Logan Wade (Brisbane) was 5-for-9 with a double, a home run (his eighth) and two RBIs.

Brisbane scored two in the seventh to tie it, but David Kandilas homered in the bottom of the ninth to win it for Canberra.  Kandilas was 3-for-5 and the home run was his twelfth.  For Brisbane, David Sutherland was 2-for-3 with a home run, his eighth.  Jake Turcato was 1-for-2 with a home run, his second.
BRISBANE 12, CANBERRA 2 IN CANBERRA (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)
It was 1-0 through four, but Brisbane scored four in the fifth, two in the sixth, and five in the seventh.  Wade Dutton was 4-for-4 with a double.  Logan Wade was 3-for-5 with a home run, his eighth.  T. J. Bennett was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his sixteenth.  Donald Lutz was 2-for-5 with a home run, his sixteenth.  Mitch Nilsson hit a three-run homer, his eighth.  Andrew Campbell hit a two-run homer, his ninth.  Travis Blackley pitched five shutout innings, giving up five hits and three walks and striking out three.
ADELAIDE 3, SYDNEY 0 IN ADELAIDE (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)
All three runs scored in the sixth.  Jack O'Loughlin struck out six in six shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks.

Adelaide scored three in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie and added four in the eighth.  Angus Roeger was 2-for-4 with a home run, his eighth.  Tai-Shan Chang hit a grand slam, his fourth home run.  Ryo Koura struck out twelve in 6.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits and two walks.

Perth scored five in the third to break a 1-1 tie and led the rest of the way.  No box score was available.  For Perth, Jake Fraley hit a home run, his thirteenth.  Ulrich Bojarski hit a home run, his fifth.  For Melbourne, Darryl George hit three home runs, his eighth, ninth, and tenth.

Caguas scored two in the third to break a scoreless tie.  Santurce scored once in the fifth but only once got the tying run to second base.  Anthony Garcia was 2-for-2 with two walks and a two-run homer, his second of the series.  Ivan Maldonado pitched six innings, giving up one run on five hits and two walks and striking out three.  For Santurce, Yadiel Hernandez was 3-for-3 with a double.  Mario Santiago pitched 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk and striking out three.
Caguas wins the Puerto Rican League championship, defeating Santurce three games to none.

Garrett Whitley hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to break a 7-7 tie.  Melbourne got a pair of solo homers in the eighth but did not get the tying run past first base.  For Perth, Alex Hall was 3-for-4.  Whitley was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks in addition to the home run, which was his eighth.  Ulrich Bojarski was 2-for-4 with a double and a three-run homer, his fourth.  Luke Hughes hit a home run, his thirteenth.  For Melbourne, Tyler Neslony was 5-for-5 with two home runs (his eighth and ninth) and three RBIs.  Daryl George was 3-for-5 with a double and a home run, his seventh.  Delmon Young was 2-for-4 with a walk and two home runs, his twelfth and thirteenth.  Allan de San Miguel hit a home run, his seventh.

It was 2-2 after seven.  Luis Sardinas hit a two-run homer in the eighth to give Anzoategui the lead and they scored another run later in the inning.  Alexi Amarista was 4-for-4.  Daryl Thompson pitched 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on nine hits and striking out three.  For Lara, Jesus Montero was 3-for-4 with a double.  Junior Guerra pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks and striking out one.
Anzoategui leads the series 3-2.

Issmael Salas homered in the seventh to break a 3-3 tie.  Salas was 2-for-3 with the home run.  Andy Wilkins was 2-for-4 with a home run, his second of the series.  Anthony Vasquez struck out seven in 6.2 innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on six hits.
Culiacan leads the series 3-2.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

The Aguilas scored two in the eighth and one in the ninth to tie it 3-3.  In the tenth, however, Licey hit four consecutive singles, the last two infield singles, to win the game.  For Licey, Bryan Evans struck out eight in seven shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks.
The Aguilas still lead the series 2-1.

Anzoategui scored two in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie.  Lara got one back in the eighth and had the bases loaded in the ninth.  Carlos Teller pitched 5.2 innings for Anzoategui, giving up one run on six hits and a walk.  For Lara, Rangel Ravelo was 3-for-5 with a home run, his second of the series.  Nestor Molina pitched 4.2 scoreless innings, giving up five hits and three walks and striking out three.
Anzoategui tied the series 2-2.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

The Aguilas trailed 4-1 after five, but scored two in the sixth, two in the seventh, and three in the eighth.  Johan Camargo's two-run homer in the seventh put the Aguilas in the lead to stay.  It was Camargo's second home run of the series.  Danny Santana and Junior Lake also homered for the Aguilas.
The Aguilas lead the series 2-0.

Twins:  Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 2-for-4 with a double.  Dereck Rodriguez (Mayaguez) struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Rey Fuentes singled home a run with two out in the ninth to break a 1-1 tie.  David Richardson pitched five innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and a walk and striking out three.  For Mayaguez, Jonathan Sanchez pitched 4.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk and striking out three.
It appears that Santurce will now play Caguas in the league championship series.

LARA 8, ANZOATEGUI 3 IN ANZOATEGUI (10 INNINGS)
Anzoategui led 3-0 after seven.  Solo homers by Jecksson Flores, Elvis Escobar, and Rangel Ravelo tied it 3-3 in the eighth.  In the tenth, a bases-loaded hit batsman put Lara ahead and Jesus Montero's grand slam put the game out of reach.  Montero was 3-for-5.  Raul Rivero pitched 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on two hits and three walks and striking out four.  For Anzoategui, Balbino Fuenmayor was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer.  Rene Reyes hit a home run, his second of the series.  Logan Darnell pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out five.
Lara leads the series 2-1.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Licey scored in the first inning.  It stayed 1-0 through six.  Christian Bethancourt singled in a run in the seventh to tie it, Johan Camargo hit a three-run homer in the eighth to break the tie, and the Aguilas scored four in the ninth to put the game out of reach.  Bethancourt was 3-for-4.  Michael Roth pitched six innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk and striking out three.  For Licey, Yermin Mercedes was 3-for-4.  Jair Jurrjens pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and three walks and striking out four.
The Aguilas lead the series 1-0.

Jovan Rosa hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Navojoa led the rest of the way.  Rosa was 3-for-4.  Alejandro Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with a home run.  Tyler Alexander struck out six in five innings, giving up one run on seven hits.  For Culiacan, Jose Guadalupe Chavez hit a home run.
Culiacan still leads the series 2-1.

AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.  Dereck Rodriguez (Mayaguez) pitched a third of an inning, giving up no runs on one hit and striking out one.
SANTURCE 4, CAROLINA 1 IN SANTURCE
Santurce scored three in the first to take a 3-1 lead.  Adalberto Flores pitched five innings, giving up one run on five hits and striking out two.
MAYAGUEZ 5, CAGUAS 4 IN CAGUAS
Caguas led 2-0 and 4-2, but Mayaguez scored three in the seventh to go into the lead to stay,  Kennys Vargas delivered a three-run double to put Mayaguez in the lead.  Vargas was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.
If I understand this correctly (and I may not), Caguas has clinched the regular-season title.  Mayaguez and Santurce are tied for second.  It appears that those two teams will play each other for the right to play Caguas in the league championship series.

Henry Urrutia hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Lara led all the way.  Urrutia was 2-for-2 with two walks in addition to the home run.  Jorge Martinez pitched 5.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and two walks and striking out three.
The series is tied 1-1.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

CULIACAN 4, NAVOJOA 0 IN NAVOJOA
All four runs came in the fourth inning, as Culiacan got a walk, two doubles, a single, and another double.  Edgar Gonzalez pitched six shutout innings, giving up four hits and two walks and striking out four.
Culiacan leads the series 2-0.

DOMINCAN LEAGUE

AGUILAS 7, ESCOGIDO 0 AT AGUILAS
The Aguilas scored two in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the eighth.  Danny Santana was 2-for-5 with two home runs (his second and third of the playoffs), driving in three.  Richelson Pena pitched seven shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out three.
The Aguilas will go on to play Licey in the championship series starting Monday.

Twins:  Todd Van Steensel (Sydney) struck out three in 1.1 innings, but allowed three runs on four hits and a walk.
MELBOURNE 7, ADELAIDE 5 IN MELBOURNE
Melbourne lost a 5-2 lead, but Tyler Neslony delivered a two-out two-run single in the seventh to break a 5-5 tie.  Allan de San Miguel was 2-for-4 with two home runs (his fourth and fifth), driving in three.  Jon Kennedy struck out six in four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits.  For Adelaide, Rodrigo Ayarza was 3-for-5 with two doubles.
SYDNEY 15, CANBERRA 12 IN SYDNEY
Sydney trailed by 4-0 and 5-2, took an 11-5 lead, had it cut to 11-10, and scored four in the eighth to put the game out of reach.  Mitchell Edwards was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, driving in three.  Lars Anderson was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run (his second), driving in five.  Alex Howe was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring three times.  For Canberra, David Kandilas was 3-for-6 with a double and three RBIs.  Boss Moanaroa was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer (his sixth) and a walk.  Jay Baum was 2-for-4 with a double and two walks, scoring three times.

MAYAGUEZ 2, CAGUAS 1 IN MAYAGUEZ (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)
Jiandido Tromp broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI double in the sixth.  Andrew Barbosa pitched 4.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits and three walks and striking out four.  For Caguas, Luis Gonzalez pitched 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks and striking out four.
CAGUAS 3, MAYAGUEZ 1 IN MAYAGUEZ (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)
Mayaguez led 1-0 after six, but David Vidal homered to tie it and Jack Lopez delivered a two-run single to give Caguas the lead and the win.  Vidal's home run was his fourth.  Orlando Roman pitched five innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and striking out three.  For Mayaguez, Nelson Arocho pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and three walks.  Tyler Herron struck out four in three perfect innings.

Rene Reyes hit a two-run homer in the eighth to break a 2-2 tie.   Daryl Thompson pitched five innings, giving up two runs on nine hits and a walk and striking out two.  For Lara, Alex Romero was 3-for-4.  Junior Guerra pitched 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks.
Anzoategui leads the championship series 1-0.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

CULIACAN 4, NAVOJOA 0 IN NAVOJOA
Joey Meneses hit a two-run homer in the first and Andy Wilkins hit a two-run homer in the third.  Anthony Vasquez pitched a complete game shutout, giving up just one hit and one walk and striking out seven.  He threw 95 pitches.  Navojoa's lone hit was a single by Alejandro Gonzalez leading off the first inning.  So, in a sense, Vasquez pitched nine no-hit innings, although he obviously does not get credit for a no-hitter.
Culiacan leads the championship series 1-0.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

AGUILAS 2, GIGANTES 0 AT GIGANTES
Edwin Espinal homered in the fourth and Alfredo Marte homeredf in the fifth.  It was the third homer for Espinal and the second for Marte in the post-season.  Francisley Bueno pitched 5.2 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and a walk and striking out three.

Escogido led 5-0 after two innings.  Licey cut the margin to 5-4 after four, but Escogido scored three in the seventh, one in the eighth, and three in the ninth.  For Escogido, Franchy Cordero was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a walk, driving in three.  Ronny Paulino was 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs.  Chris Roberson was 2-for-4 with two walks and three runs.

Cameron Warner doubled home a run in the second and Travis Witherspoon doubled one home in the sixth.  Frank Gailey struck out seven in six shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks.  For Sydney, Matthew Rae struck out five in five innings, giving up one run on three hits and six walks.  Sydney had just one hit, a double by Michael Suchy in the first inning.
CANBERRA 13, SYDNEY 5 IN SYDNEY (GAME 2)
Leading 2-1 after four, Canberra scored four in the fifth and three in the sixth to take control.  Jay Baum was 3-for-6 with a triple and two doubles, scoring three times and driving in three.  David Kandilas was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a walk, scoring four times and driving in three.  Cameron Warner was 3-for-5 with a double.  Boss Moanaroa was 2-for-3 with four RBIs.  Lake Bachar struck out seven in six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks.  For Sydney, Michael Suchy was 3-for-3 with a home run (his sixth), two doubles, and a walk.  Zac Shepherd was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, his third.

Brisbane scored three in the first and led all the way.  Wade Dutton was 2-for-3 with a home run (his seventh) and a double.  T. J. Perth scored four in the third to break a scoreless tie.  Luke Hughes was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer, his twelfth.  Garrett Whitley was 2-for-4 with a home run, his seventh.  Nick Veale struck out seven in 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and three walks.  The lone Brisbane hit was a single by Chih Sheng Lin leading off the seventh.

Ryan Dale hit a two-run homer in the second to give Melbourne a 3-2 lead.  It was 4-3 after four but Adelaide only once got a man to second base after that.  For Melbourne, Michael Crouse hit a home run, his fifth.  Tyler Neslony hit a home run, his seventh.  Ryan Dale hit a two-run homer, his second.  Mark Hamburger struck out six in six innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks.
