Games of April 29

The Red Wings were swept, but good games everywhere else, especially from the starting pitchers.

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 6, ROCHESTER 4 IN ROCHESTER (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

The Red Wings lost leads of 2-0 and 4-2, as Slade Heathcott's two-run triple was part of a three-run seventh that carried the RailRiders to victory.  The comeback spoiled a good start by Pat Dean, who struck out five in five innings while giving up two runs on five hits and two walks.  He did throw 102 pitches in those five innings.  The Red Wings had only two hits but drew six walks and got the benefit of two S/WB errors.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer.  James Beresford was 0-for-0 with three walks.

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 10, ROCHESTER 2 IN ROCHESTER (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

A six-run second carried the RailRiders to a sweep of the doubleheader.  The Red Wings made two errors in the inning.  Starter Taylor Rogers went only three innings, allowing seven runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Darin Mastroianni was 2-for-3 with a double.  Rochester got four hits in this game, giving them a total of six for the doubleheader.

CHATTANOOGA 5, MONTGOMERY 4 IN CHATTANOOGA

The Lookouts took a 5-1 lead after four and then held on, as Montgomery scored single runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth.  The Biscuits stranded seven runners in the last three innings, leaving men on second and third in both the seventh and ninth and leaving the bases loaded in the eighth.  The two teams combined to strand twenty-six baserunners.  David Hurlbut struck out six in six innings, giving up one run on seven hits and a walk.  Mitch Garver was 3-for-5 with two doubles.  Daniel Palka was 1-for-4 to drop his average to .351.

FORT MYERS 5, CHARLOTTE 0 IN CHARLOTTE

Keaton Steele pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, walking three and striking out four, to lead the Miracle.  Raul Fernandez finished up with two shutout innings.  Nick Gordon's fourth-inning double was the key to a two-run inning that put Fort Myers in the lead to stay.  Ryan Walker was 2-for-4 and Logan Wade was 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk.  Gordon was 1-for-4, giving him an average of .337.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, SOUTH BEND 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Pitching was again the story, as Sam Clay went 5.2 innings and gave up one run on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts.  His ERA on the season (22.2 innings) is now 0.79.  C. K. Irby pitched two shutout innings, allowing only a walk and giving him 11.2 scoreless innings to start the season.  LaMonte Wade went 2-for-4 to raise his average to .357.  Luis Arraez took an 0-for-3 and is now batting .341.

Games of April 28

A shutout for Logan Darnell.  A big comeback for Cedar Rapids.

ROCHESTER 4, BUFFALO 0 IN BUFFALO

Logan Darnell pitched a complete game shutout, giving up four hits and four walks with no strikeouts and throwing 105 pitches.  The Red Wings did not have a big inning, but put up single runs in the second, sixth, eighth, and ninth.  Byron Buxton was 2-for-5 with a triple and a double.  Wilfredo Tovar was 2-for-3 with a walk and raised his average to .313.  James Beresford was 0-for-4, lowering his average to .299.  Stephen Wickens was 1-for-4 with a home run.

MONTGOMERY 6, CHATTANOOGA 1 IN CHATTANOOGA

The first four Biscuits went single, double, single, triple.  They had four runs before the first inning was over and the game was essentially decided at that point.  Starter D. J. Baxendale settled down after the first, giving up five runs on five hits and four walks with five strikeouts in six innings.  Former Twins prospect Chih-Wei Hu started for Montgomery, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings.  Daniel Palka was 2-for-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch, raising his average to .356.  His line is .356/.434/.575, giving him an OPS of 1.009 in 73 at-bats.

JUPITER 12, FORT MYERS 3 IN JUPITER

The Hammerheads scored in each of the first three innings to take a 5-0 lead and were never threatened.  It was a tough outing for Tyler Jay, who lasted only 4.1 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on ten hits and no walks with no strikeouts.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with a triple to raise his average to .342.  Alex Real was 2-for-3.
Note:  I listened to much of this game on the Jupiter broadcast.  The announcers did the game in what could charitably be called a relaxed tone, never really seeming to get excited about anything.  Also, there was almost no crowd noise.  It struck me that if NPR ever started broadcasting sports, this is probably what it would sound like.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, WEST MICHIGAN 6 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

The Kernels trailed 6-1 after three.  A four-run fourth got them back into the game.  It was still 6-5 going to the bottom of the ninth.  A single, an error, and a walk loaded the bases with one out, J. J. Fernandez singled in the tying run, and a wild pitch brought home Sean Miller with the winning run.  Sam Gibbons did okay other than the one bad inning, but his line was five innings, six runs (five earned), five hits, five walks, and one strikeout.  Logan Lombana struck out four in three shutout innings.  Fernandez was 3-for-5.  Luis Arraez was 0-for-3 with a walk, dropping his average to .366.  LaMonte Wade, who's been dealing with a hamstring issue, did not start but came into the game in the third due to an injury to Daniel Kihle.  He went 1-for-2 to raise his average to .348.

Trey Vavra and Kohl Stewart lead Fort Myers to a Miracle win.  Jason Wheeler does well in his first appearance of the season in Rochester.

BUFFALO 2, ROCHESTER 1 IN BUFFALO (10 INNINGS)

Domonic Brown's RBI single brought home the winning run.  Jason Wheeler made his first AAA appearance of the season and did very well, allowing just one run (a Casey Kotchman homer) on six hits and one walk with three strikeouts.  James Beresford was 3-for-5 raising his average to .317.  Byron Buxton was 2-for-5.

CHATTANOOGA LOOKOUTS

No game scheduled.

FORT MYERS 6, JUPITER 1 IN JUPITER (10 INNINGS)

Trey Vavra homered with two out in the ninth to tie it 1-1 and he hit a two-run single to cap a five-run tenth as the Miracle lived up to their name.  Kevin Garcia singled home the go-ahead run in the tenth and Chris Paul had a two-run ground-rule double in the inning.  Kohl Stewart pitched six shutout innings, giving up three hits and three walks with five strikeouts to lower his ERA to 1.93.  His WHIP is 0.86.  Alex Swim was 3-for-5.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-5, dropping his average to .333.

WEST MICHIGAN 8, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Steven Fuentes hit a two-run triple in a four-run third that put the Whitecaps up 6-2 and carried them to a win.  Starter Andro Cutura had a rough outing, giving up eight runs on nine hits and two walks in just four innings.  The bullpen did well, with Michael Theofanopoulos pitching three shutout innings and Zach Tillery throwing two shutout innings with four strikeouts. Luis Arraez went 2-for-3 to raise his average to .395.  J. J. Fernandez was 1-for-4 with a home run.  LaMonte Wade again did not play, but has not been placed on the disabled list.

Games of April 26

Comebacks for Rochester and Chattanooga and shutouts for Fort Myers and Cedar Rapids as Twins affiliates sweep!

ROCHESTER 8, BUFFALO 7 IN BUFFALO (14 INNINGS)

The Red Wings got two in the ninth to tie it 4-4.  In the fourteenth, Adam Brett Walker II hit a bases-loaded triple and scored on a Wilfredo Tovar single to give Rochester an 8-4 lead.  The Bisons came back with three in the bottom of the fourteenth, getting an RBI single from Domonic Brown and a two-run homer by Jesus Montero.  Fortunately, the home run killed the rally, as the next three Bisons went out to end the game.  Walker II was 4-for-7 with a triple and a double.  Carlos Paulino was 3-for-7 and raised his average to .400.  Kennys Vargas was 3-for-6.  Starter David Martinez pitched 6.1 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  Alex Wimmers, in his AAA debut, pitched two shutout innings, allowing a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

CHATTANOOGA 10, BIRMINGHAM 7 IN CHATTANOOGA

This time it was the Barons who blew a big lead.  The Lookouts spotted them five in the first but came back to score three in the second and seven in the third to win.  Daniel Palka hit a grand slam in the big third inning.  Ryan Eades settled down some after the first inning but still gave up six runs on nine hits and four walks with three strikeouts in only 3.1 innings, throwing 93 pitches in that time.  Leonardo Reginatto was 4-for-5.  Palka was 3-for-4 with a home run (his third), a double, and a walk, raising his average to .338.

FORT MYERS 9, JUPITER 1 IN JUPITER

A triple, three singles, two walks, and two wild pitches led to a five-run third that carried the Miracle.  Stephen Gonsalves was again dominant, striking out six in six shutout innings while giving up just two hits and two walks.  His ERA dropped to 1.44, his WHIP to 0.72, and he has 24 strikeouts in 25 innings.  Alex Swim was 3-for-5.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-3 with two walks and raised his average to .357.

CEDAR RAPIDS 1, WEST MICHIGAN 0 IN WEST MICHIGAN

Sean Miller singled in a run in the second and Randy LeBlanc pitched six shutout innings to lead the Kernels to victory.  LeBlanc allowed four hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  C. K. Irby and John Curtiss, neither of who has given up an earned run this season (9.2 innings and 8 innings, respectively), finished the shutout.  Miller was 2-for-3.  Luis Arraez was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, raising his average to .371.  LaMonte Wade again did not play, but he does not appear to be on the disabled list.

Games of April 24

Three excellent pitching performances.  Danny Santana has a good day on a rehab assignment.

ROCHESTER 6, BUFFALO 3 IN ROCHESTER

The Red Wings scored five runs in the eighth to break a 1-1 tie.  James Beresford capped the inning with a two-run triple.  Pat Dean pitched seven strong innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks with two strikeouts.  Ex-Twin Scott Diamond worked six shutout innings for the Bisons, allowing five hits and one walk with four strikeouts.  Beresford was 3-for-5 on the day.  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-3 with a walk, raising his average to .316.

BIRMINGHAM 14, CHATTANOOGA 13 IN CHATTANOOGA

The Lookouts blew leads of 5-1, 11-6, and 12-9 in losing.  They had the tying run on second with two out in the ninth, but Mitch Garver struck out to end the game.  There were all kinds of good batting performances, of course.  Daniel Palka led the way, going 4-for-4 with a home run (his second), two doubles, and two walks.  Travis Harrison was 3-for-5 with a home run (his second), a double, and a walk.  David Hurlbut started and struck out six in four innings, but he also surrendered six runs on eight hits and a walk.  None of the four relievers went unscored upon.

FORT MYERS 2, CHARLOTTE 0 IN FORT MYERS

The Miracle shutout the Stone Crabs for the second consecutive game.  Randy Rosario pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up six hits and no walks with two strikeouts.  Danny Santana, on a rehab assignment, went 2-for-4 with a home run and scored both Miracle runs.  Nick Gordon was given the day off.

Games of April 23

Fine starting pitching for three of the four teams.  Not much offense for any of them.

BUFFALO 10, ROCHESTER 2 IN ROCHESTER

With the callup of Tyler Duffey, this was pretty much a bullpen game, and the bullpen didn't exactly come through.  Loek Van Mil started and pitched a scoreless first, but surrendered five runs on three hits and three walks in the second.  The story with the next pitcher, Taylor Rogers, was similar:  he held the Bisons scoreless in the third, but yielded four runs on four hits and a walk in the fourth.  That made it 9-0 and the game was pretty much over at that point.  The Red Wings had only five hits and no player had more than one.

BIRMINGHAM 6, CHATTANOOGA 0 IN CHATTANOOGA

The Lookouts made four errors and wasted six shutout innings by D. J. Baxendale.  Baxendale struck out six, walked none, and gave up just four hits.  As soon as he came out, however, the Barons pounced, getting two runs on four hits off Alex Wimmers in the seventh and four runs on a walk, two hits, and two errors off Jake Reed in the ninth.  No Chattanooga batter had more than one hit.

FORT MYERS 1, CHARLOTTE 0 IN FORT MYERS (11 INNINGS)

The Miracle got only one hit through the first ten innings and still won the game.  Felix Jorge pitched seven innings, giving up four hits and one walk with four strikeouts.  Trevor Hildenberger and Yorman Landa each worked two shutout innings.  In the eleventh, Brian Navaretto got a one-out single and took second on a balk.  Pinch-runner Austin Diemer then scored on an Edgar Corcino single to win the game.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4, dropping his average to .343.

CLINTON 2 CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN CLINTON (GAME 1--18 INNINGS)

A game that was scheduled for seven innings went two-and-a-half times longer.  It's rare that you win a game when you go scoreless for sixteen consecutive innings, but the LumberKings did it, scoring in the first and not again until the eighteenth.  The lone Kernels run came in the seventh.  Starter Sam Clay struck out six in six innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks.  Logan Lombana and Kuo Hua Lo each pitched four shutout innings, with Lombana striking out six.  A. J. Murray was 3-for-7 with three doubles.  Jermaine Palacios was 3-for-6.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-7, dropping his average to .344.

CLINTON 3, CEDAR RAPIDS 0 IN CLINTON (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

The Kernels scored only one run in twenty-five innings on the day as they were shut out in game two.  Dereck Rodriguez struck out seven in five innings but allowed three runs on three hits and three walks.  J. J. Fernandez was 3-for-3 with a double, but the rest of the Kernels lineup got only one hit.

CHATTANOOGA 4, BIRMINGHAM 0 IN CHATTANOOGA

Jason Wheeler struck out nine in seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk, to lead the Lookouts to a win.  Chattanooga took the lead with a run in the third and took control of the game with a three-run seventh.  Zach Granite was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.  Shannon Wilkerson was 2-for-3 with a double.  D. J. Hicks and Engelb Vielma were also 2-for-3.

ROCHESTER 5, PAWTUCKET 0 IN ROCHESTER

Jose Berrios struck out seven in seven innings, giving up just two hits and a walk, to lead the Red Wings.  Two singles and two errors led to two runs in the third to give Rochester a 2-0 lead.  Heiker Meneses tripled and scored in the fourth, and the Red Wings got single runs in the seventh and eighth.  John Hicks was 2-for-3 with a home run.  Wilfredo Tovar was 2-for-4.  In three starts, Berrios is 2-0, 1.06, 0.94 WHIP with 20 strikeouts in 17 innings.

MISSISSIPPI 4, CHATTANOOGA 2 IN MISSISSIPPI

Matt Lipka hit a bases-loaded triple in the sixth to put the Braves up 4-0.  The Lookouts scored two in the eighth and had the bases loaded with one out, but D. J. Hicks and Joe Maloney each struck out and the Lookouts went down in order in the ninth.  Ryan Eades struck out five in five innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks.  Daniel Palka was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Levi Michael was 2-for-3.  As a team, Chattanooga is batting .223/.309/.309.

JUPITER 4, FORT MYERS 2 IN FORT MYERS

A walk and four singles led to three first-inning Hammerheads runs, and that was all they needed.  The Miracle cut the lead to 3-2 in the eighth and had men on first and second with two out, but Edgar Corcino grounded out and they went down in order in the ninth.  Tyler Jay did well after the first inning, striking out six in five innings and giving up three runs on five hits and three walks.  Chris Paul was 3-for-5 with two doubles and Trey Vavra was 2-for-4 to raise his average to .300.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4, dropping his average to .322.

Games of April 20

A good outing by Alex Meyer is wasted.  A good outing by Aaron Slegers is not.  Max Murphy and John Curtiss lead the Kernels to victory.

PAWTUCKET 2, ROCHESTER 0 IN ROCHESTER

Sam Travis hit a two-run double in the sixth and that was all the scoring.  Alex Meyer pitched well, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in seven innings.  He took a line drive off his leg in the sixth, but remained in the game and was apparently all right.  The Red Wings had a total of four hits and they were achieved by only two players, with John Hicks going 2-for-4 with a double and Buck Britton going 2-for-4.  The Red Wings, as a team, are hitting .211/.272/.298 for an OPS of .571.

CHATTANOOGA 6, MISSISSIPPI 2 IN MISSISSIPPI

An RBI single by Daniel Palka put the Lookouts ahead in the fifth and they scored once in each of the last three innings to put away the victory.  Aaron Slegers pitched seven strong innings, giving up two runs on only four hits and one walk with three strikeouts.  D. J. Hicks was 3-for-5  and Joe Maloney was 2-for-3 with a home run and two walks.  Stuart Turner went 0-for-3 with a walk to drop his average to .321.

JUPITER 4, FORT MYERS 3 IN FORT MYERS

Brian Anderson tripled and scored on a balk in the eighth to break a 3-3 tie and give the victory to the Hammerheads.  Kohl Stewart struck out eight in 5.1 innings but gave up three runs on six hits and a walk.  Trey Vavra was 3-for-4 with a home run and a double.  Nick Gordon went 0-for-4, dropping his average to .327.

CEDAR RAPIDS 6, BURLINGTON 3 IN BURLINGTON

The Kernels trailed 3-1 after three and 3-2 after six, but a two-out bases-loaded triple by Max Murphy in the seventh put Cedar Rapids in the lead for good.  They had filled the bases on a hit batsman, a walk, and an error.  John Curtiss came on in the eighth and struck out five in two shutout innings, allowing only a walk.  Andro Cutura started and went five innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Sean Miller was 2-for-3 with a double.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-5 with a home run, dropping his average to .358.

It was 1-1 after three, but the Red Sox scored in each of the next four innings to build a 9-1 lead.  Pat Dean had a tough go, getting through five innings with five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Loek Van Mil hasn't pitched well all year and didn't in this game, either, allowing four runs on six hits in 1.2 innings to raise his ERA to 24.30 in 3.1 innings (four games).  The Red Wings had only four hits, with one of them a home run by David Murphy.

MISSISSIPPI 7, CHATTANOOGA 4 IN MISSISSIPPI

The Braves scored four in the second and led the rest of the way.  The Lookouts got within 6-4 in the eighth and had two on with one out, but a foul out and a strikeout ended the inning.  Starter David Hurlbut lasted only 3.1 innings, surrendering five runs (four earned) on nine hits and one walk with three strikeouts.  The Lookouts drew six walks but had only five hits, with no one getting more than one.

FORT MYERS 2, JUPITER 1 IN FORT MYERS

Chris Paul's sacrifice fly brought Tanner English home in the eighth to put the Miracle up 2-1.  Stephen Gonsalves struck out eight in seven innings, giving up one run on only two hits and a walk.  Trevor Hildenberger pitched two shutout innings.  Alex Swim was the only batter on either team to get more than one hit, going 2-for-4.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-3, dropping his average to .353.

BURLINGTON 5, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN BURLINGTON

Hutton Meyer's leadoff triple in the seventh led to the tie-breaking run, putting the Bees up 2-1, and a two-run single by Angelo Amendolare keyed a three-run eighth that put the game out of reach.  Randy LeBlanc pitched very well, going seven innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  No Kernel had more than one of the team's seven hits.  LaMonte Wade went 0-for-4 to drop his average to .375.

Games of April 18

Fine starting pitching throughout the organization, but only Cedar Rapids could take advantage of it.

PAWTUCKET 3, ROCHESTER 1 IN ROCHESTER (10 INNINGS)

Three walks and a wild pitch, all issued by J. R. Graham, led to two tenth-inning runs and a Red Sox victory.  Tyler Duffey pitched very well, going seven innings and allowing just one run on seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts.  Reynaldo Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a second-inning homer for the only Red Wings run.

MISSISSIPPI 5, CHATTANOOGA 3 IN MISSISSIPPI

Levi Hyams had a two-run double to cap a three-run seventh that put the Braves up 5-1.  Stuart Turner hit a two-run homer in the eighth to get the Lookouts back in the game, but they never got a man past first after that.  D. J. Baxendale struck out six in six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and no walks.  Levi Michael was 2-for-3.

DAYTONA 4, FORT MYERS 1 IN DAYTONA

The Tortugas took a 2-1 lead in the fifth and added two in the eighth to take control of the game.  Randy Rosario pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks.  Not bad, but he was bested by Daytona pitched Tyler Mahle, who struck out nine in seven innings and allowed just one run on three hits and no walks.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a triple, dropping his average to .375.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, BURLINGTON 3 IN BURLINGTON

Finally some good news.  The Kernels turned four singles and two walks into a four-run third, putting them up 6-0.  The Bees never got back into the game--it was 7-1 after eight before they scored two in the ninth to make the final score look better.  Cody Stashak pitched six innings, giving up just one run on three hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  Rafael P. Valera was 3-for-5 with two doubles.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-4 to raise his average to .409.
