Players of the Week: August 17-23, 2015

Yes, it's a week late.  The season will probably be over before I get caught up, but I'm doing my best in the time I have.

ROCHESTER RED WINGS (3-3)
Batter:  Nobody, really, but Danny Santana was 6-for-22 with two doubles and a triple.  For the season he is hitting .267/.304/.405 in 116 at-bats.
Pitcher:  Pat Dean made one start, pitching nine innings.  He gave up no runs on six hits and no walks with six strikeouts.  For the season he is 10-10, 2.92, 1.18 WHIP with 33 walks and 92 strikeouts in 157 innings (24 starts).
CHATTANOOGA LOOKOUTS (2-3)
Batter:  Max Kepler was 9-for-20 with a home run, a double, and four walks.  For the season he is hitting .342/.424/.572 and is 16-for-20 in stolen bases in 360 at-bats.
Pitcher:  Brett Lee made one start, pitching seven innings.  He gave up no runs on two hits and four walks with four strikeouts.  For the season he is 5-4, 3.14, 1.19 WHIP with 25 walks and 33 strikeouts in 77.1 innings (13 starts).
FORT MYERS MIRACLE (4-3)
Batter:  Logan Wade was 11-for-22 with a triple and a double.  For the season he is hitting .256/.293/.365 in 293 at-bats.
Pitcher:  Omar Bencomo made one start, pitching seven innings.  He gave up no runs on three hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  For the season he is 1-1, 1.50, 0.89 WHIP with 5 walks and 5 strikeouts in 18 innings (3 starts).
CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS (3-3)
Batter:  T. J. White was 8-for-20 with two doubles and three walks.  For the season he is hitting .247/.344/.338 and is 12-for-15 in stolen bases in 328 at-bats.
Pitcher:  Sam Gibbons made one start, pitching eight innings.  He gave up no runs on one hit and no walks with twelve strikeouts.  For the season he is 7-3, 2.72, 1.11 WHIP with 20 walks and 63 strikeouts in 79.1 innings (13 starts).
ELIZABETHTON TWINS (3-3)
Batter:  LaMonte Wade was 8-for-20 with a home run, a triple, five walks, and two stolen bases.  For the season he is hitting .311/.427/.515 and is 7-for-8 in stolen bases in 196 at-bats.
Pitcher:  Andro Cutura made one start, pitching six innings.  He gave up no runs on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts.  For the season he is 3-2, 1.08, 0.90 WHIP with 12 walks and 37 strikeouts in 50 innings (9 starts).
GCL TWINS (1-5)
Batter:  Rowan Ebersohn was 6-for-15 with a double and a walk.  For the season he is hitting .203/.231/.257 in 74 at-bats.
Pitcher:  Lachlan Wells made one start, pitching five innings.  He gave up one run on four hits and one walk with five strikeouts.  For the season he is 5-2, 2.09, 0.97 WHIP with 11 walks and 49 strikeouts in 47.1 innings (9 starts, 1 relief appearance).
DSL TWINS (4-2)
Batter:  Antonio Tovar was 9-for-26 with a home run and two walks.  For the season he is hitting .281/.357/.346 and is 9-for-22 in stolen bases in 228 at-bats.
Pitcher:  Huascar Ynoa made two starts, pitching ten innings.  He gave up one earned run on eight hits and four walks with nine strikeouts.  For the season he is 2-5, 2.70, 1.29 WHIP with 30 walks and 47 strikeouts in 56.2 innings (14 starts).

Games of August 23

Kennys Vargas goes deep.  Another poor offensive day for the Miracle.  An eight-run inning sinks the Kernels.  Jermaine Palacios leads the E-Twins.

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 4, ROCHESTER 2 IN SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE

Batting stars:  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and two RBIs.  Danny Ortiz was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Carlos Paulino was 1-for-3 with a double.
Pitching star:  A. J. Achter pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Gary Sanchez was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs.  Ben Gamel was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.  Kyle Haynes pitched seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
The game:  Vargas delivered an RBI single in the first to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead.  Austin Romine's two-run single made it 2-1 RailRiders after two.  Sanchez doubled and scored in the fourth and Gamel had an RBI double in the seventh to make it 4-1.  Vargas homered leading off the ninth but the tying run never got past the batter's box.
Of note:  Danny Santana was 0-for-4.  James Beresford was 1-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Taylor Rogers struck out nine in 6.2 innings but gave up four runs on eight hits and a walk.

TENNESSEE AT CHATTANOOGA

Rained out.

JUPITER 4, FORT MYERS 1 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Engelb Vielma was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Logan Wade was 2-for-4.  Tanner Vavra was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Pitching stars:  Jake Reed pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit with one strikeout.  Zach Jones struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and no walks.  Trevor Hildenberger retired all four batters he faced, striking out two.
Opposition stars:  Rodrigo Vigil was 1-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.  Jose Adames struck out five in five shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks.
The game:  An error put the Hammerheads on the board in the second.  In the fourth, Vigil delivered a three-run double that put them up 4-0.  The lone Miracle run came in the eighth on a walk, a single, a walk, and a wild pitch.
Of note:  Ryan Walker was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Stephen Gonsalves pitched four innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks with one strikeout.

CLINTON 11, CEDAR RAPIDS 7 IN CLINTON

Batting stars:  T. J. White was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring three times.  Alex Real was 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching stars:  Yorman Landa struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.  John Curtiss pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Adam Martin was 3-for-4 with a home run (his third) and a double, scoring twice and driving in four.  Gianfranco Wawoe was 3-for-5 with a home run (his eighth), scoring twice and driving in four.  Austin Cousino was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.
The game:  It was 3-3 half-way through, but Clinton had an eight-run inning in the fifth to take control.  The inning featured a two-run double by Cousino, a two-run single by Wawoe, and a three-run double by Martin.  The Kernels scored three in the eighth and one in the ninth but never really threatened to get back into the game.
Of note:  Rafael P. Valera was 0-for-5.  Brett Doe was 0-for-5.  Randy LeBlanc, a reliever most of the season, clearly tired toward the end of his performance, getting stuck with a line of four innings, seven runs, six hits, and two walks with three strikeouts.

ELIZABETHTON 8, GREENEVILLE 6 IN GREENEVILLE

Batting stars:  A. J. Murray was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring three times.  Jermaine Palacios was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Lewin Diaz was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Pitching star:  Kuo Hua Lo retired all four batters he faced, striking out three of them.
Opposition stars:  Randy Cesar was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer (his fourth) and a walk.  Daz Cameron was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Connor Goedert was 2-for-4 with a home run, his fourth.
The game:  Palacios had a two-run single in a three-run second to take a 3-0 lead.  The Astros scored one in the bottom of the second, but the Twins got that one back in the third and then scored three in the fourth to apparently take control of the game.  Travis Blankenhorn had a two-run single in that inning.  The Astros got back into the game with three in the fifth and Goedert added a homer in the eighth to make it 8-6.  The Astros brought the tying run up to bat with two out in the eighth but their last four batters were retired.
Of note:  Manuel Guzman was 1-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Miles Nordgren pitched five innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Games of August 22

Josmil Pinto returns to Rochester.  The Lookouts lose late.  A rare bad start for Mat Batts.  Sam Gibbons shines again.  An E-Twins comeback falls short.  The GCL Twins get overwhelmed in the ninth.  Huascar Ynoa has a fine game.

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 11, ROCHESTER 5 IN SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE

Batting stars:  Xavier Avery was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice.  Eric Fryer was 3-for-4 with a triple and a run.  Danny Santana was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Pitching stars:  None.
Opposition stars:  Aaron Judge was 3-for-3 with a home run (his eighth) and a double, scoring three times.  Austin Romine was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Gregorio Petit was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs.
The game:  It was tied 3-3 after five innings, but the RailRiders took control after that.  Rob Refsnyder had a two-run single to cap a four-run sixth that made it 7-3.  Each team scored once in the seventh.  Gary Sanchez then hit a three-run homer in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Of note:  James Beresford was 1-for-3 with two walks.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Josmil Pinto, back with Rochester after a rehab assignment, was 0-for-4.  Oswaldo Arcia was 1-for-4 with a home run, his eleventh.  Michael Bowden struck out six in five innings but gave up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks.

PENSACOLA 10, CHATTANOOGA 6 IN PENSACOLA

Batting stars:  Stephen Wickens was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Stuart Turner was 1-for-1 with three walks and a run.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
Pitching stars:  None.
Opposition stars:  Zach Vincej was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and a walk, scoring three times.  Phillip Ervin was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.  Marquez Smith was 1-for-3 with a home run (his eighth) and a walk, scoring twice.
The game:  Max Kepler's RBI double capped a three-run third that put the Lookouts ahead 3-1.  The Blue Wahoos scored once in the third and once in the fifth to tie it 3-3.  It was tied 5-5 going to the bottom of the seventh, but Pensacola took over from there.  Jesse Winker's two-run single made it 7-5.  Harrison tripled and scored in the eighth to cut it to 7-6, but Alex Blandino had a two-run single in a three-run bottom of the eighth that put the game out of reach.
Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.  Max Kepler was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Jason Wheeler struck out five in 5.1 innings but gave up five runs on six hits and two walks.

BRADENTON 5, FORT MYERS 0 IN BRADENTON

Batting stars:  Mitch Garver was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Jason Kanzler was 1-for-3 with a triple.
Pitching star:  Tyler Jay pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Harold Ramirez was 3-for-4 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in one.  Chris Diaz was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.  Tyler Eppler pitched seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
The game:  Ramirez singled in one in the first, Diaz doubled in two in the second, and a sacrifice fly scored one in the third to put the Marauders up 4-0.  The closest the Miracle came to scoring was the seventh, when Kanzler hit a one-out triple.  A strikeout and a line out ended the inning.
Of note:  Zach Granite was 1-for-4.  Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Marcus Knecht was 0-for-4.  Mat Batts had a rare bad start, pitching five innings and giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

CEDAR RAPIDS 2, CLINTON 0 IN CLINTON

Batting stars:  Brett Doe was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  T. J. White was 2-for-4 with a run.  Brian Navaretto was 1-for-3 with a double.
Pitching stars:  Sam Gibbons struck out twelve in eight shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.  Michael Theofanopoulos pitched a perfect inning.
Opposition star:  Zack Littell pitched eight shutout innings, allowing four hits and no walks with four strikeouts.
The game:  Sam Gibbons retired the first seventeen batters before giving up a two-out single in the sixth.  That was the LumberKings' only baserunner of the game.  The Kernels' offense wasn't much better, though, as Littell retired fifteen in a row at one point.  There was no score through eight.  The first two Kernels went out in the ninth, but Edgar Corcino singled, White singled, and Doe delivered a double for the only run of the game.
Of note:  Sean Miller was 0-for-4.  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-4.

PULASKI 4, ELIZABETHTON 3 IN PULASKI

Batting stars:  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Daniel Kihle was 2-for-4 with a double.  Alex Perez was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.
Pitching star:  Anthony Mciver struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up two hits.
Opposition stars:  Austin Afenir was 3-for-4 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in one.  Kane Sweeney was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Juan Jimenez struck out two in two innings, allowing one hit.
The game:  The Yankees got three in the first and one in the third to take an early 4-0 lead.  The Twins got two in the fourth and Wade singled in a run in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3.  The Twins twice had the tying run on second base, once with none out, but could not even the score.
Of note:  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Zander Wiel was 0-for-3.  Onesimo Hernandez struck out six in five innings, giving up four runs on nine hits and a walk.

GCL RED SOX 8, GCL TWINS 3 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Luis Arraez was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Bryant Hayman was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Jorge Andrade was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.
Pitching stars:  Jovani Moran struck out four in four shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks.  Max Cordy pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Andy Perez was 2-for-2 with three walks, scoring once and driving in two.  Roldani Baldwin was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Gerson Bautista struck out four in four shutout innings, allowing one hit and three walks.
The game:  It was close almost all the way.  Rafael Oliveras singled in a run for the Red Sox in the fifth, but the Twins took a 2-1 lead in the sixth, getting two runs on just one hit.  The Red Sox went back in front in the eighth, scoring twice to go up 3-2.  In the ninth, the Red Sox used two walks and five singles to score five times and put the game out of reach.
Of note:  Ariel Montesino was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Roberto Gonzalez was 0-for-4.

DSL TWINS 6, DSL ROJOS 1 AT ROJOS

Batting stars:  Oliver Tejeda was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.  Yeltsin Encarnacion was 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.  Darling Cuesto was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Huascar Ynoa struck out five in five innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and two walks.  Erick Balbuena pitched two perfect innings.  Carlos Suniaga pitched two perfect innings.
Opposition stars:  Hidekel Abreu was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Carlos Mateo was 1-for-1 with a walk and a run.  Pedro Acevedo pitched two shutout innings, allowing a walk.
The game:  RBI singles by Antonio Tovar and Cuesto keyed a four-run third inning that put the Twins in control early.  The lone Rojos run came on a run-scoring single by Aristedes Sanchez.  A pair of errors led to two more Twins runs in the seventh.
Of note:  Gorge Munoz was 1-for-5 with a double and a run.  Tovar was 1-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Jorge Parra was 1-for-5.

Games of August 21

An excellent game for Jose Berrios.  D. J. Baxendale does okay, too.  A couple of big innings sink the Miracle.  Randy Rosario pitches well in a losing effort.  Dereck Rodriguez has a rare bad outing.  The GCL Twins get ten-runned.  Junior Amarante leads the DSL Twins to victory.

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 3, ROCHESTER 2 IN SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE (14 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  James Beresford was 2-for-5 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Danny Ortiz was 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Jose Berrios struck out ten in seven innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks.  Mark Hamburger pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits with one strikeout.  Michael Tonkin pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits with one walk.
Opposition stars:  Austin Romine was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Jose Pirela was 2-for-5 with a walk.  Michael Pineda pitched 4.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and no walks with three strikeouts.
The game:  Vargas doubled and scored on an Ortiz single to put the Red Wings up 1-0 in the second.  The RailRiders tied it in the third.  Each team scored once in the eighth, making it 2-2.  That's where it stayed until the fourteenth.  The Red Wings had put men on first and second with one out in the eleventh, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.  In the fourteenth, Romine delivered a two-out RBI single to end the game.
Of note:  Danny Santana was 0-for-6.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-5 with a walk.  Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-6.

CHATTANOOGA 7, PENSACOLA 2 IN PENSACOLA

Batting stars:  Levi Michael was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer (his fifth), a double, and a walk, scoring twice.  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Max Kepler was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale struck out six in five innings, giving up one run despite five hits and five walks.  Nick Burdi struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up three walks.
Opposition stars:  Beau Amaral was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Alex Blandino was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Ryan Wright was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.
The game:  Walker II doubled in a run in the first and Shannon Wilkerson homered in a two-run third that made it 3-0.  It was 4-1 after five.  Michael then hit a three-run homer in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-5 with a run.

BRADENTON 9, FORT MYERS 3 IN BRADENTON

Batting stars:  Chad Christensen was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jason Kanzler was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.
Pitching star:  Jake Reed pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Wyatt Mathisen was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in three.  Jordan Steranka was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Frank Duncan pitched seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits and no walks with four strikeouts.
The game:  In the first Steranka had a two-run single and Mathisen a two-run double, putting the Marauders up 4-0.  RBI singles by Christensen and Kanzler cut the lead to 4-2 in the second, but the Marauders got three in the third and the game was never close again.
Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 0-for-4.  Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-4.  Marcus Knecht was 1-for-4.  Matt Summers, normally a reliever, started and pitched two innings, giving up four runs on four hits and a walk with no strikeouts.

CLINTON 2, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN CLINTON

Batting stars:  Sean Miller was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-3 with a walk.  T. J. White was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Pitching star:  Randy Rosario struck out eight in seven innings, giving up one run on two hits and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Wayne Taylor was 1-for-3 with a triple and a run.  Brock Hebert was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Lukas Schiraldi struck out eight in five innings, allowing one run on three hits and four walks.
The game:  In the third Miller doubled, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch to put the Kernels up 1-0.  In the fourth Hebert doubled and scored on a pair of fly outs to tie it 1-1.  There was no more scoring until the ninth.  Taylor led off with a triple, the next two batters struck out, but Austin Cousino singled to end the game.
Of note:  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-4.

PULASKI 14, ELIZABETHTON 5 IN PULASKI

Batting stars:  Kamran Young was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, his fourth.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  A. J. Murray was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.
Pitching stars:  None.
Opposition stars:  Nathan Mikolas was 4-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Carlos Vidal was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer (his ninth) and a walk, scoring twice.  Jesus Aparicio was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.
The game:  Young hit a three-run homer in the second and Wade singled in a run in the third to put the Twins ahead 4-0.  It was pretty much all Pulaski after that.  Vidal hit a three-run homer in a six-run third that put the Yankees up 6-4.  They followed that with a five-run fourth that put the game out of reach.  Kane Sweeney had a two-run double in the fourth inning.
Of note:  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-5 with a triple.  Daniel Kihle was 1-for-5 with a double and a run.  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Dereck Rodriguez pitched three innings, giving up six runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

GCL RED SOX 10, GCL TWINS 0 AT RED SOX

Batting stars:  Roni Tapia was 1-for-2 with a walk.  Luis Martinez was 1-for-2 with a double.
Pitching stars:  Eduardo Del Rosario pitched five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Matz Schutte pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Trent Kemp was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring three times and driving in one.  Andy Perez was 2-for-5 with a run and three RBIs.  Emmanuel De Jesus struck out five in five shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk.
The game:  It was actually close for six innings.  The Red Sox scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 2-0 lead.  In the seventh, however, the Red Sox had an eight-run inning to put the game out of reach.  There was no big hit, but they had six singles and five walks.  The Twins only once got a man as far as third base.
Of note:  Luis Arraez was 0-for-3.  Ariel Montesino was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Kolten Kendrick was 1-for-2.  Bryan Haar was 0-for-4.

DSL TWINS 9, DSL ROJOS 8 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Junior Amarante was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs.  Antonio Tovar was 2-for-5 with a home run (his second) and two RBIs.  Gorge Munoz was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring once.
Pitching stars:  Miguel De Jesus pitched four innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and no walks with one strikeout.  Fredderi Soto pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Leonardo Ortiz was 4-for-5 with a triple and a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Johnny Sims (how is there a DSL player named Johnny Sims?) was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.  Aristedes Sanchez was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.
The game:  A six-run second put the Twins ahead 6-2.  They had a double, five singles, a walk, and a hit batsman in the inning.  The Rojos tied it 6-6 with a four-run fifth, but a wild pitch scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth and Tovar homered in the sixth to put the Twins back in front 8-6.  The Rojos again came back, scoring two in the seventh to tie it 8-8.  The first two Twins in the ninth were retired, but Amarante doubled, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Edgar Herrera's infield single to win the game.
Of note:  Yeltsin Encarnacion was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Jorge Parra was 1-for-4.

Games of August 20

Not enough offense for Chattanooga.  Omar Bencomo shines for the Miracle.  Ethan Mildren and the bullpen carry the Kernels.  LaMonte Wade hits his eighth for the E-Twins.  Lachlan Wells keeps pitching well in the GCL.  Errors carry the DSL Twins to a win.

PENSACOLA 3, CHATTANOOGA 1 IN PENSACOLA

Batting stars:  Levi Michael was 2-for-3 with a run.  Max Kepler was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Aaron Slegers struck out seven in 6.2 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks.  J. T. Chargois pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Kyle Skipworth was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Ray Chang was 1-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Timothy Adleman pitched 7.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts.
The game:  Skipworth singled in a run in the second and the Blue Wahoos scored twice in the seventh to go ahead 3-0.  The Lookouts did not get a hit until the fourth but put two on in the fourth and fifth.  Their lone run scored in the eighth on Kepler's two-out single.  They had the tying run on base in the eighth and brought him up to bat in the ninth.
Of note:  Stephen Wickens was 1-for-4.  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-3 with a walk.  D. J. Hicks was 1-for-4.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-3 with a walk.

FORT MYERS 1, BRADENTON 0 IN BRADENTON

Batting stars:  Logan Wade was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Mitch Garver was 2-for-4 with a run.  Marcus Knecht was 1-for-4 with a triple.
Pitching stars:  Omar Bencomo pitched seven shutout innings, giving up three hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  Tyler Jay pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.  Todd Van Steensel struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.
Opposition stars:  Justin Maffei was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Felipe Gonzalez pitched five shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
The game:  There was no score through six, although the Miracle certainly missed a chance in the fifth when Knecht led off with a triple.  In the seventh Garver singled, stole second, and scored on a Wade single for the only run of the game.  The Marauders best scoring chance came in the sixth, when they put men on second and third with two out.
Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-4.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-3 with a walk.

CEDAR RAPIDS 2, KANE COUNTY 1 IN KANE COUNTY

Batting stars:  Zack Larson was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.  Brian Navaretto was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  T. J. White was 1-for-3 with a double.
Pitching stars:  Ethan Mildren pitched four innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Yorman Landa struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up no hits and no walks.  Zach Tillery struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits.
Opposition stars:  Marty Herum was 1-for-4 with a home run, his sixth.  Henry Castillo was 3-for-4.  Wei-Chieh Huang pitched six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
The game:  Herum homered leading off the second to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth, with a man on second and two out, Navaretto circled the bases on a single-plus-error to give the Kernels a 2-1 lead.  That was all the scoring.  The Cougars' best threat after that came in the seventh, when they put men on first and third with one out.
Of note:  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-4.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-3 with a walk.

PULASKI 4, ELIZABETHTON 2 IN PULASKI

Batting stars:  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-4 with a home run (his eighth) and a triple.  Daniel Kihle was 1-for-2 with a walk.  Kamran Young was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Samuel Clay struck out four in four shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks.  Jose Abreu pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.
Opposition stars:  Jesus Aparicio was 1-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Hoy Jun Park was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Simon De la Rosa struck out eight in four shutout innings, allowing only a walk.
The game:  Young singled in a run in the second and Wade homered in the third to give the Twins a 2-0 lead.  It stayed 2-0 until the seventh, when the Yankees struck for four.  Aparicio had a two-run double, but the Yankees were also helped by four walks and a wild pitch.  The Twins got the tying run on base in the eighth and brought the tying run to bat in the ninth.
Of note:  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-4.  Alex Perez was 1-for-4.  Zander Wiel was 0-for-2.   Brian Olson was 1-for-1.

GCL TWINS 5, GCL ORIOLES 4 AT ORIOLES

Batting stars:  Ariel Montesino was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Bryan Haar was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Rowan Ebersohn was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.
Pitching stars:  Lachlan Wells struck out five in five innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk.  Hector Lujan struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up three hits.  Johan Quezada struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.
Opposition stars:  Ryan Mountcastle was 1-for-4 with a home run, his third.  Jason Heinrich was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.  Nick Vespi pitched three shutout innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout.
The game:  The Twins got one in the first and four in the second, highlighted by Haar's two-run single-plus-error, to go ahead 5-0.  Mountcastle homered in the fourth to put the Orioles on the board and they got back into the game with a three-run sixth in which they were helped by a walk, an error, a hit batsman, and two wild pitches.  They had the tying run on third in that inning, but did not score and did not come that close again.
Of note:  Luis Arraez was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Roberto Gonzalez was 0-for-4 with an RBI.

DSL TWINS 7, DSL DODGERS 5 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Jorge Parra was 1-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Antonio Tovar was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Junior Amarante was 2-for-4 with a run.
Pitching star:  Andriu Marin struck out six in three innings, giving up an unearned run on one hit and no walks.
Opposition stars:  Luis Paz was 3-for-4 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in one.  Daniel Padilla was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Romer Cuadrado was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
The game:  Cuadrado's two-run double capped a three-run third that put the Dodgers up 3-0.  The Twins came back with one in the third and two in the fourth, in both cases helped by an error, to tie it 3-3.  Paz tripled and scored in the sixth to put the Dodgers ahead 4-3, but the Twins were again aided by an error to tie it 4-4 in the seventh.  In the eighth, Tovar and Darling Cuesto each had an RBI single in a three-run inning that gave the Twins their first lead.  The Dodgers got one in the ninth but did not put the tying run on base.  The Dodgers made five errors in the game, leading to six unearned runs.
Of note:  Yeltsin Encarnacion was 0-for-3 with a run.  Gorge Munoz was 1-for-3 with two runs.  Jadison Jimenez struck out eight in six innings, but gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks.
