Games of July 30


Rochester comes back to win its seventh straight.  Sano hits a game-winner for the Rock Cats.  Josh Burris leads the E-Twins to victory.

ROCHESTER 5, LEHIGH VALLEY 4 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

Batting stars:  James Beresford was 2-for-4 and scored twice.  Drew Butera was 2-for-4 and scored once.  Brian Dinkelman was 2-for-4 and scored once.
Pitching stars:  Luis Perdomo retired all five batters he faced, striking out four of them.  Michael Tonkin struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two hits and no walks.
Opposition stars:  Zach Miner pitched five shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks with one strikeout.  Tyler Henson was 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs.  Pete Orr was 3-for-4 with a triple.
Key inning:  The ninth.  The Red Wings had scored two in the eighth to cut a 4-0 deficit to 4-2.  With one out in the ninth, consecutive singles by Dinkelman, Beresford, and Butera loaded the bases.  A walk to Jermaine Mitchell cut the lead to 4-3 and a walk to Eduardo Escobar tied the score.  With two out, Oswaldo Arcia walked to put Rochester ahead.
Prospect watch:  Escobar was 0-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.  Chris Parmelee was 0-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Arcia was 0-for-4 with two RBIs.  Liam Hendriks pitched 6.1 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

NEW BRITAIN 5, AKRON 4 IN NEW BRITAIN (12 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Dan Rohlfing was 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, and an RBI.  Miguel Sano was 2-for-5 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Danny Santana was 2-for-5 with a walk and scored twice.
Pitching stars:  Trevor May pitched six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts.  Daniel Turpen pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk.  Matt Hauser retired all four batters he faced, striking out two.
Opposition stars:  Toru Murata struck out eight in six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks.  Tyler Holt was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Matt Lawson was 2-for-5 with a triple.
Key inning:  The twelfth.  The score was tied at three.  In the top of the inning, Jake Lowery hit a one-out double, went to third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch to give the Aeros a 4-3 lead.  In the bottom half, Santana walked, Eddie Rosario singled, and Sano hit a two-run double to win the game.
Prospect watch:  Rosario was 2-for-6 and scored once.  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-3 with a walk.

FORT MYERS 5, DAYTONA 2 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Levi Michael was 0-for-1 with three walks.
Pitching stars:  Matthew Summers pitched four shutout innings, giving up three hits and four walks with three strikeouts.  Chad Rodgers struck out two in two perfect innings.  Tyler Jones struck out two in a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Dayan Diaz struck out seven in three shutout innings, giving up no hits but three walks.  Anthony Giansanti was 2-for-4 with a walk and a home run.
Key inning:  The third.  The Miracle led 2-0.  Fort Myers started the inning with singles by J. D. WilliamsHicks, and Kennys Vargas, loading the bases.  A wild pitch brought in one run and a two-out triple by Jhon Goncalves made it 5-0.
Prospect watch:  Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-5.  Vargas was 1-for-4 and scored once.  Mike Kvasnicka was 0-for-2 with two walks and scored once.

BURLINGTON 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN BURLINGTON

Batting stars:  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-4 with a triple and scored once.  Max Kepler was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Christian Powell struck out six in five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks.  Hudson Boyd pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.
Opposition stars:  Tyler DeLoach struck out eleven in 5.a innings, allowing one run on two hits and three walks.  Wade Hinkle was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Exicardo Cayones was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once.
Key inning:  The seventh.  The Bees led 2-1.  A walk, a single, and a walk loaded the bases with none out and a two-run Hinkle single made it 4-1 Burlington.

ELIZABETHTON 7, KINGSPORT 1 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Bryan Haar was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Logan Wade was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once.  Romy Jimenez was 1-for-3 with a walk and scored once.
Pitching stars:  Josh Burris pitched five shutout innings, giving up three hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Kuo Hua Lo struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks.
Opposition stars:  Jeff Diehl was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Pedro Perez was 2-for-4 and scored once.  Adrian Abreu was 0-for-1 with three walks.
Key inning:  The third.  The Twins led 1-0.  With one out, Haar singled and Mitch Garver doubled.  A two-out walk to Jimenez loaded the bases and Kelvin Ortiz tripled to make it 4-0.

GCL ORIOLES 3, GCL TWINS 2 AT ORIOLES

Batting star:  Jonatan Hinojosa was 1-for-3 and scored once.  The Twins had only two hits.
Pitching stars:  Stephen Gonsalves started and struck out six in three shutout innings, giving up one hit and three walks.  Josh Guyer pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Lester Oliveros (remember him?), on a rehab assignment, pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Andres Aguilar was 2-for-3 with a walk and two doubles, scoring twice and driving in one.  Stefan Crichton pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts.
Key inning:  The eighth.  The score was tied at two.  Aguilar led off with a double and scored on a one-out double by Ronarsy Ledesma to put the Orioles in the lead.

Batting stars:  Antoan Richardson was 3-for-4 with a double and scored three times.  Oswaldo Arcia was 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and a three-run homer, his tenth.  Eduardo Escobar was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching stars:  P. J. Walters pitched seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Michael Tonkin pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and no walks.
Opposition stars:  Jonathan Schoop was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.  Eric Thames was 2-for-4 with a walk and a double.  Luis Exposito was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Where They Stand: Through Games of July 24, 2013


Rochester is 55-51, second in the International League North, three games behind Pawtucket.  The Red Wings are tied for first with Norfolk in the wild card race.  Rochester won its most recent game and is 6-4 in its last ten games.

New Britain is 48-56, fifth in the Eastern League Eastern, seventeen games behind Binghamton.  The Rock Cats are five games behind New Hampshire for the last playoff spot.  New Britain has lost six consecutive games and is 2-8 in its last ten games.

Fort Myers is 16-15 in the second half, fourth in the Florida State League South, three games behind Palm Beach.  Overall, Fort Myers is 61-37.  The Miracle has qualified for the playoffs by winning the first half.  Fort Myers won its most recent game and is 6-4 in its last ten games.

Key inning:  The ninth.  The Twins trailed 2-1.  In the top of the inning, with two out and none on, pinch-hitter Dereck Rodriguez singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Avila to tie the score.  In the bottom of the inning, a walk and a single put runners on first and second with one out and Jeyckol De Leon singled to bring in the winning run.
Prospect watch:  Zach Granite was 0-for-5.  Romy Jimenez was 1-for-4.  Rodriguez was 1-for-1 and scored once.

Batting star:  Jorge Fernandez was 1-for-4 with a home run, his second.
Pitching stars:  Sam Gibbons pitched four shutout innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits and four walks while striking out two. Lewis Thorpe struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.  Miguel Gonzalez pitched a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Alex Murphy was 2-for-3 with a double.  Starter Ivan Hernandez pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout.
Key inning:  The sixth.  The score was tied at one.  Zach Larson led off with a single, went to second on a ground out, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly to give the Twins the lead.
Prospect watch:  Larson was 1-for-4 and scored once.  Adonis Pacheco was 1-for-4 and scored once.  Amaurys Minier was 0-for-1 and then was removed from the game.

Batting stars:  Joel Ramirez was 2-for-5 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in three.  Junior Amarante was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored once.
Pitching stars:  Eduardo Del Rosario struck out five in four shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks.  Gabriel Rosario pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Elias Villasana struck out one in a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Luis Barahona was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Moises Lendor was 2-for-4.
Key inning:  The sixth.  The Twins led 3-0 when they scored five to put the game out of reach.  With one out, three consecutive walks filled the bases.  The next man struck out, but an error scored one, Ramirez cleared the bases with a double, and Frank Encarnacion doubled in the fifth run.  All eight Twins runs were unearned on four Padres errors.
Prospect watch:  Manuel Guzman was 1-for-5 with a double and scored once.  Frank Encarnacion was 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Jhon Silva pitched one inning, giving up one run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.
