Players of the Week: June 23-29, 2014


Some tough decisions.

ROCHESTER

Position player:  Chris Colabello was 7-for-25 with three doubles, a home run, and a walk.  For the season he is hitting .262/.341/.406 in 122 at-bats.
Pitcher:  Logan Darnell made two starts, pitching fourteen innings.  He gave up four runs on twelve hits and six walks with nine strikeouts.  For the season he is 4-4, 3.12, 1.41 WHIP with 63 strikeouts in 75 innings (14 starts).

NEW BRITAIN

Position player:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 9-for-27 with three doubles, a home run, and two walks.  For the season he is hitting .302/.344/.520 in 281 at-bats.
Pitcher:  Taylor Rogers made one start, pitching eight innings.  He gave up one run on six hits and one walk with eleven strikeouts.  For the season he is 7-4, 3.90, 1.38 WHIP with 75 strikeouts in 92.1 innings (15 starts).

FORT MYERS

Position player:  Nate Roberts was 7-for-14 with four doubles and four walks.  For the season in Fort Myers, he is hitting .389/.560/.611 in 18 at-bats.
Pitcher:  Jose Berrios made two starts, pitching thirteen innings.  He gave up three runs on ten hits and one walk with fifteen strikeouts.  For the season he is 8-3, 2.09, 1.04 WHIP with 105 strikeouts in 90.1 innings (15 starts).

CEDAR RAPIDS

Position player:  Bryan Haar was 7-for-23 with three home runs.  For the season he is hitting .267/.307/.452 in 281 at-bats.
Pitcher:  Ethan Mildren made two starts, pitching twelve innings.  He gave up ten hits and three walks with eleven strikeouts.  For the season he is 2-5, 4.46, 1.34 WHIP with 50 strikeouts in 66.2 innings (twelve starts, one relief appearance).

ELIZABETHTON

Position players:  Nick Gordon was 9-for-21 with a double, two triples, a home run, and two stolen bases.  For the season he is hitting .359/.381/.590 in 39 at-bats.  Max Murphy was 7-for-17 with two doubles, two home runs, and four walks.  For the season he is hitting .385/.528/.692 in 26 at-bats.
PItchers:  Sam Gibbons made one start, pitching seven innings.  He gave up no runs on one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts.  For the season he is 1-0, 1.64, 0.91 WHIP with 10 strikeouts in 11 innings (two starts).  Stephen Gonsalves made on start, pitching six innings.  He gave up no runs on two hits and no walks with nine strikeouts.  For the season he is 1-0, 1.80, 0.60 WHIP with 13 strikeouts in 10 innings (two starts).

GCL TWINS

Position player:  Nelson Molina was 7-for-13 with two triples, two walks, and a stolen base.  For the season he is hitting .400/.458/.600 in 20 at-bats.
PItcher:  Onas Farfan made two appearances, one start, pitching 5.2 innings.  He gave up no runs on three hits and five walks with six strikeouts.  Those are also his season numbers.

DSL TWINS

Position player:  Junior Amarante was 6-for-15 with a triple, two walks, and two stolen bases.  For the season he is hitting .328/.435/.362 and is 10-for-11 in stolen bases in 58 at-bats.
Pitcher:  Jadison Jimenez made two starts, pitching thirteen innings.  He gave up no runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts.  For the season he is 2-2, 2.53, 0.91 WHIP with in 32 innings (6 starts).

Games of June 29


A complete game for Logan Darnell.  Another fine start for Jose Berrios.  Cedar Rapids gives one away.

ROCHESTER 8, NORFOLK 1 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Daniel Ortiz  was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer (his fourth) and a walk, scoring twice.  James Beresford was 3-for-4 with two runs.  Chris Colabello was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching star:  Logan Darnell pitched a complete game, giving up one run on nine hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
Opposition stars:  Michael Almanzar was 1-for-2 with a home run and a walk.  Francisco Peguero was 2-for-4 with a triple.
The game:  Ortiz opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the third.  It did not kill the rally, as it was followed by a single, a walk, and doubles by Colabello and Chris Herrmann, giving Rochester a 5-0 lead and control of the game.  Almanzar homered for the lone Norfolk run in the fifth, but the Red Wings got one in the seventh and two in the eighth.  Despite getting nine hits, the Tides got only one man to third base other than the home run.  That was when Peguero tripled with one out in the fourth.  Darnell then struck out the next two batters, two of the three strikeouts he got in the game.
Of note:  Eric Farris was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Deibinson Romero was 0-for-2 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Herrmann was 1-forr-4 with a double annd two RRBIs.

NEW HAMPSHIRE 3, NEW BRITAIN 2 IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Batting star:  Aaron Hicks was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.
Pitching stars:  Pat Dean pitched 6.1 innings, giving up three runs on nine hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Cole Johnson struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Daniel Norris struck out six in five innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks.  Mike Crouse was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Andy Burns was 3-for-4 with a run.
The game:  Crouse doubled in a run in the fourth to give New Hampshire a 1-0 lead.  New Britain tied it in the fifth on back-to-back two-out doubles by Tony Thomas and Mike Kvasnicka.  It stayed tied until the seventh, when the Fisher Cats opened the inning with five consecutive singles, scoring two runs.  In the ninth, the Rock Cats got two singles and a sacrifice fly, cutting the margin to 3-2 and putting the tying run on second with two out, but a strikeout ended the game.
Of note:  Stephen Wickens was 1-for-4.  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-4.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-3 with an RBI.  After winning eleven in a row and thirteen out of fourteen, New Britain has now lost five consecutive games.

PALM BEACH 5, FORT MYERS 2 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Tyler Grimes was 1-for-1 with a double and three walks.  Lance Ray was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Jose Berrios struck out seven in seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk.  Tyler Jones pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Tyrell Jenkins pitched six shutout innings, allowing three hits and four walks with one strikeout.  Bruce Caldwell was 2-for-4 with two home runs (his third and fourth) and three RBIs.
The game:  Caldwell homered in the first inning to give Palm Beach a 1-0 lead.  Nick Martini singled in a run in the fourth to make it 2-0.  The Cardinals put it out of reach in the eighth, going up 5-0 on a solo homer by Charlie Tilson and a two-run shot by Caldwell.  Fort Myers got single runs in the eighth and ninth but did not bring the tying run up to bat.
Of note:  Niko Goodrum was 1-for-5 with a run.  Nate Roberts was 0-for-3 with two walks.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-5.

CLINTON 7, CEDAR RAPIDS 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Bryan Haar was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his eleventh.  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Jon Murphy was 2-for-4 with a double.
Pitching stars:  Ethan Mildren pitched seven shutout innings, giving up four hits and a walk with six strikeouts.  Dallas Gallant struck out two in a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Christian Carmichael was 2-for-4 with a grand slam (his second homer) and a double.  Edwin Diaz pitched six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
The game:  It looked good for eight innings.  A walk, a double, two hit batsmen, and a ground out gave Cedar Rapids a 2-0 lead in the first.  It stayed 2-0 until the eighth, when Haar hit a two-run homer to make it 4-0.  In the ninth, however, the roof fell in.  Four consecutive walks opened the inning to make it 4-1, a single and a walk made it 4-3, and Carmichael's grand slam put Clinton ahead 7-4, all with none out.  The Kernels did not get the tying run up to bat in the bottom of the ninth.
Of note:  Zack Granite was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Chad Christensen was 1-for-3 with a triple and a run.

BRISTOL AT ELIZABETHTON

The game was suspended in the bottom of the first with the score tied at zero.

Games of June 28


The Red Wings tie it in the ninth only to lose on an error in the thirteenth.  Adam Brett Walker II gets his fifteenth homer the hard way.  Bryan Haar drives in seven to lead Cedar Rapids to victory.

NORFOLK 2, ROCHESTER 1 IN ROCHESTER (13 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Chris Colabello was 2-for-5 with a double.  Chris Rahl was 2-for-5 with a double.
Pitching stars:  Alex Meyer pitched six innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  A. J. Achter struck out four in three perfect innings.  Edgar ibarra pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Chris Jones pitched six shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Xavier Paul was 1-for-2 with a home run (his ninth) and a walk.
The game:  Paul homered in the fourth to give Norfolk a 1-0 lead.  It looked like it might hold up, as Rochester had only two hits in the first eight innings.  But James Beresford opened the ninth with a walk and scored on a Deibinson Romero double to send the game into extra innings.  In the thirteenth, however, Francisco Peguero singled, went to third on a stolen base-plus-error, and scored on a Michael Almanzar single.  Rahl singled and stole second in the bottom of the thirteenth but did not advance any farther.
Of note:  Eric Farris was 1-for-6 with a double.  Romero was 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Chris Herrmann was 1-forr-4 with a walk.  Aaron Thompson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

NEW HAMPSHIRE 6, NEW BRITAIN 2 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Eduardo Nunez was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Mike Kvasnicka was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Pitching star:  Matthew Summers retired all four batters he faced, striking out one.
Opposition stars:  Jon Berti was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Matt Newman was 1-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.  Richard Bleier pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and a walk with one strikeout.
The game:  New Britain led early, getting an RBI single from Kvasnicka in the second and an RBI single from Rodriguez in the third to go ahead 2-0.  New Hampshire took the lead in the bottom of the third, loading the bases on a single and two walks, scoring one on a ground out, and getting a Berti two-run single to go up 3-2.  It stayed 3-2 until the seventh, when a single and two walks again loaded the bases and Newman hit a bases-clearing double.  The Rock Cats opened the eighth with two walks, but a double play put a stop to the threat and there was no threat in the ninth.
Of note:  Corey Wimberly was 0-for-4.  Aaron Hicks was 0-for-2 with two walks.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-4.  Starter Virgil Vasquez pitched 6.1 innings, giving up four runs on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 3, PALM BEACH 2 IN FORT MYERS

Batting star:  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-3 with a home run (his fifteenth) and a walk.
Pitching stars:  Matt Tomshaw pitched 7.1 innings, giving up two runs on nine hits and a walk with five strikeouts.  Madison Boer pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Alex Mejia was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Nick Petree struck out six in five shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk.
The game:  Luke Volt tripled and scored on Mejia's double in the second to give Palm Beach a 1-0 lead.  It stayed 1-0 until the seventh, when Walker II hit an inside-the-park home run to tie it.  Anthony Garcia tripled and scored on Mejia's single in the eighth to put the Cardinals back up 2-1.  In the ninth, Fort Myers won the game with Twins Baseball.  A hit batsman and two walks loaded the bases with none out.  With one down, a hit batsman forced in the tying run and an error brought home the winning run.
Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-4.  Nate Roberts was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run.  Dalton Hicks was 0-for-4.  Max Kepler was 1-for-4 with a double.  Lance Ray was used as a pinch-hitter and was 0-for-1.

CEDAR RAPIDS 9, CLINTON 5 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (6 1./2 INNINGS--RAIN)

Batting stars:  Bryan Haar was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and a grand slam, his ninth and tenth home runs.  Engelb Vielma was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.  Bo Altobelli was 1-for-3 with a home run.
Pitching star:  Brandon Bixler struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Jack Reinheimer was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.  Aaron Barbosa was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Chantz Mack was 1-for-2 with a home run (his fourth) and two RBIs.
The game:  Haar hit a three-run homer in the first inning to give Cedar Rapids a 3-0 lead.  Reinheimer homered in the second to cut the lead to 3-1, but in the bottom of the second Altobelli led off with a homer and, following an error and two walks, Haar hit a grand slam to make the score 8-1.  Clinton tried to chip away, getting an RBI single from Barbosa in the third, a Mack homer in the fourth, and scoring two in the fifth on three singles and a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 8-5.  Jason Kanzler singled in a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-5.  The game was halted with one out in the top of the seventh.
Of note:  Zack Granite was 1-for-4 with two runs.  Chad Christensen was 0-for-2 with a walk and two runs.  Starter Ryan Eades struck out five in five innings, but gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and no walks.

ELIZABETHTON 6, BRISTOL 0 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Max Murphy was 1-for-2 with a two-run homer (his seventh) and two walks.  Tanner English was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Pitching stars:  Felix Jorge pitched five innings, giving up three hits and three walks.  C. K. Irby struck out four in two innings, giving up two hits and two walks.  Dereck Rodriguez pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition star:  Trae Arbet was 1-for-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
The game:  English singled in a run in the third and Elizabethton took control in the fourth with a three-run rally consisting of a walk, a hit batsman, an error, a sacrifice fly, and an English RBI single.  Murphy hit a two-run homer in the seventh to make it 6-0.  Bristol had at least one man on in every inning but the first and the ninth, but stranded nine men and went 1-for-9 with men in scoring position.
Of note:  Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with a run.  Tyler Kuresa was 0-for-4.  Samuel Clay pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk with one strikeout.

GCL TWINS 4, GCL RED SOX 3 AT RED SOX

Batting stars:  Joel Polanco was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs.  Dubal Baez was 3-for-5 with a run.  Rainis Silva was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Onas Farfan struck out four in four shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks.  Callan Pearce struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Miles Nordgren pitched two shutout innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.
Opposition star:  Wiliams Jerez pitched two shutout innings, allowing one hit.
The game:  Joel Ramirez singled in a run in the second and Polanco homered in the third to give the Twins a 2-0 lead.  The Red Sox took the lead in the fifth on an RBI double by Derek Miller, a run-scoring single by Josh Ockimey, and an error.  The Twins came back in the seventh, getting RBI singles by Ramirez and Silva.  The Red Sox put men on first and third with two out in the seventh but did not threaten after that.
Of note:  Nelson Molina was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Amaurys Minier was 0-for-5.  Jarrard Poteete was 1-for-4 with a double.

DSL REDS 4, DSL TWINS 1 AT TWINS

Batting star:  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.
Pitching stars:  Jadison Jimenez pitched seven shutout innings, giving up four hits and one walk with one strikeout.  Carlos Aponte struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.
Opposition stars:  Sucre Doval was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Jose De Luna was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The game:  There was no score until the sixth, when Palacios tripled and scored on a Lewin Diaz single.  In the eight, with one out, the Reds loaded the bases on a walk, a single, and another walk.  A wild pitch brought home the tying run, followed by an intentional walk to re-load the bases.  Derik Capitillo then brought home two with a single-plus-error and a sacrifice fly scored a fourth run.  The Twins did not get a man past first base after that.
Of note:  Jorge Andrade was 1-for-4.  Luis Arraez was 0-for-4.  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Games of June 27


Brad Nelson leads Rochester to a comeback win.  Todd Van Steensel preserves a Cedar Rapids victory.  Nick Gordon stays hot for Elizabethton.

ROCHESTER 6, LEHIGH VALLEY 5 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

Batting stars:  Brad Nelson was 1-for-3 with a double and a hit-by-pitch, driving in four.  Chris Herrmann was 2-forr-3 with a trriple, scorrinng twice and drrivinng in onne.  Chris Colabello was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Aaron Thompson struck out two in a perfect inning.  Ryan Pressly pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Ex-Twin Jason Marquis, on a rehab assignment, struck out six in six innings, allowing one run on three hits and a walk.  Russ Canzler was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.
The game:  Canzler singled in a run in the first and Sebastian Valle hit a two-run homer in the second to put Lehigh Valley up 3-0.  Leandro Castro singled in a run in the sixth to make it 4-0.  Rochester finally got on the board in the seventh, as Herrmann hit an RRBI trriple and scorred on a grrounnd out to cut the lead to 4-2, but the IronPigs got an RBI double from Tyler Henson to go up 5-2 after seven.  In the eighth, the Red Wings got serious.  Colabello singled in one, Rochester loaded the bases with two out, and Nelson delivered a bases-clearing double to give Rochester a 6-5 lead.  Lehigh Valley was retired in order in each of the last two innings.
Of note:  Eric Farris was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring once.  Deibinson Romero was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Starter Sean Gilmartin settled down after a poor start, going six innings and giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks with one strikeout.

NEW HAMPSHIRE 3, NEW BRITAIN 2 IN NEW HAMPSHIRE (GAME 1--8 INNINGS--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run.  Eduardo Nunez was 2-for-2 with two walks.
Pitching star:  Tyler Duffey pitched 6.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Opposition stars:  Randy Boone retired all six batters he faced, striking out three of them.  Mike McDade was 1-for-3 with a home run, his fourth.
The game:  Tony Thomas delivered a two-out two-run double in the fourth to give New Britain a 2-0 lead.  An error put New Hampshire on the board in the fifth and the Fisher Cats tied it in the seventh on McDade's home run.  The Rock Cats got the go-ahead run to third in the eighth, but could not score him.  In the bottom of the eighth, Kenny Wilson singled and scored on a Jon Berti double to end the game.
Of note:  Corey Wimberly was 0-for-4.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-4.

NEW HAMPSHIRE 8, NEW BRITAIN 0 IN NEW HAMPSHIRE (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Mike Kvasnicka pinch-hit and was 1-for-1.
Pitching stars:  Mark Hamburger came out of the bullpen to make his first start, going four innings and giving up one run on one hit and two walks with three strikeouts.
Opposition stars:  Casey Lawrence pitched a complete game, striking out eight and giving up one hit and no walks.
The game:  Mike McDade singled in a run in the fourth and New Hampshire got RBI singles from Jon Berti and Matt Newman in the fifth to go up 3-0.  The Fisher Cats put the game out of reach with a five-run sixth, as Berti and Newman again had RBI singles, two runs were walked in, and the fifth scored on a wild pitch.  Meanwhile, Lawrence was going for a perfect game.  New Britain did not get a man on base in the first six innings.  In the seventh, the first two batters were retired, making twenty up and twenty down.  Then Kvasnicka, pinch-hitting, grounded a single to left, forcing Lawrence to settle for a one-hitter.
Of note:  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-3.  Aaron Hicks was 0-for-3.  Eduardo Nunez was 0-for-2.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-3.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-2.

ST. LUCIE AT FORT MYERS

The completion of the previous game and the regularly scheduled game were both rained out.

CEDAR RAPIDS 6, CLINTON 5 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Jason Kanzler was 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Chad Christensen was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jon Murphy was 1-for-3 with a home run.
Pitching star:  Todd Van Steensel struck out three in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.
Opposition star:  Marcus Littlewood was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.
The game:  Isaiah Yates homered in the second to give Clinton a 1-0 lead, but Cedar Rapids came roaring back.  Murphy homered in the third to tie it,   Kanzler hit an RBI triple and scored on an Alex Swim single to make it 3-1 after four.  In the fifth, Tanner Vavra had an RBI single, Christensen drove in a run with a double, and another run scored on a wild pitch, giving the Kernels a seemingly comfortable 6-1 lead.  The LumberKings got two in the sixth to get back into it, and in the eighth a double, three singles, and a wild pitch cut the lead to 6-5 and put men on second and third with two out.  A strikeout ended the threat, and Clinton went down in order in the ninth.
Of note:  Zack Granite was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Bryan Haar was 0-for-4.  Starter Lewis Thorpe pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

BURLINGTON 4, ELIZABETHTON 3 IN BURLINGTON

Batting stars:  Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run.  Austin Diemer was 1-for-4 with two runs.
Pitching stars:  Chih-Wei Hu pitched six innings, giving up two runs on three hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Randy LeBlanc pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Chase Darhower pitched five shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks with four strikeouts.  Joshua Banuelos was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
The game:  Brandon Dulin tripled in a run and scored on a Banuelos single to give Burlington a 2-0 lead in the first.  There was no more scoring until the seventh, when Gordon tripled and scored on a wild pitch.  An error and another wild pitch tied the score later in the inning.  In the ninth, Diemer singled, went to third on a Tyler Mautner double, and scored on a balk to give Elizabethton a 3-2 lead.  In the bottom of the ninth, a single was followed by a single-plus-error, tying the score and putting the winning run on second.  Riley King then singled in the winning run.
Of note:  Tanner English was 0-for-4.  Mautner was 1-for-4 with a double.  Brett Doe was 0-for-2.

GCL RED SOX 3, GCL TWINS 2 AT TWINS

Batting star:  Jarrard Petitte was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.
Pitching stars:  Starter Zach Tillery struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up no hits and two walks.  Brandon Easton struck out seven in four innings of relief, giving up one run on three hits and two walks.  Trevor Hildenberger pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition star:  Luis Ramos struck out six in five shutout innings, allowing two hits and no walks.
The game:  There was no scoring until the seventh, when Josh Ockimey hit a leadoff triple and scored to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.  The Twins got the lead with two in the bottom of the seventh, getting RBI singles from Roberto Gonzalez and Ariel Montesino.  Victor Acosta singled in a run in the eighth to tie it up, and in the ninth two singles and two errors put the Red Sox in front 3-2.  The Twins went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Of note:  Logan Wade was 0-for-4.  Nelson Molina was 1-for-3.  Amuarys Minier was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.

DSL WHITE SOX 5, DSL TWINS 2 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Jorge Parra was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Jorge Andrade was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk.  Antonio Tovar was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.
Pitching stars:  Jose Martinez pitched four shutout innings of relief, giving up three hits with two strikeouts.  Argenis Silva pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Nelson Acosta struck out four in four shutout innings, giving up three hits and no walks.  Ramon Beltre was 2-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring once and driving in three.  Hanleth Otano was 2-for-4 with a run.
The game:  RBI singles by Daniel Gonzalez and Bradley Valdez put the White Sox ahead 2-0.  A bases-clearing triple by Beltre made it 5-0 after four, and that was all the White Sox would need.  The Twins got on the board in the seventh on a Parra RBI triple.  He later scored on a ground out.  The Twins did not get the tying run up to bat.
Of note:  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-4.  Robert Molina was 1-for-4 with a double.  Junior Aramante was 1-for-4.  Starter Robener Cabrera pitched four innings, giving up five runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Games of June 26


Sam Gibbons, Tanner English, and Nick Gordon lead Elizabethton to victory.  Kris Johnson and Jason Wheeler pitch well but to no avail.  Aaron Hicks goes deep for New Britain.

LEHIGH VALLEY 1, ROCHESTER 0 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

Batting star:  James Beresford was 2-for-4.
Pitching stars:  Kris Johnson struck out nine in seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and five walks.  Lester Oliveros pitched a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Greg Smith pitched six innings, allowing two hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  Maikel Franco was 1-for-1 with two walks.
The game:  The game's lone run came in the fourth, when a pair of walks put men on first and second with one out and Franco hit a single-plus-error to bring the run home.  Rochester did not get a hit until the fourth.  Their best scoring chance was in the ninth, when they got three singles.  Unfortunately, a caught stealing meant the closest they came to scoring was having men on first and second with two out.  A fly ball ended the game.
Of note:  Eric Farris was 1-for-4 with a double.  Deibinson Romero was 1-for-4.  Chris Colabello was 0-for-4.

NEW HAMPSHIRE 2, NEW BRITAIN 1 IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Batting stars:  Aaron Hicks was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-2 with a walk.
Pitching stars:  Jason Wheeler pitched six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  Adrian Salcedo struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Kevin Nolan was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.  Derrick Chung was 2-for-4 with a run.  Starter Scott Copeland pitched three shutout innings, allowing no hits and no walks.
The game:  There was no scoring until the sixth.  The first two New Hampshire batters were retired, but then came a walk, a single, and Nolan's two-run double to give the Fisher Cats a 2-0 lead.  The lone New Britain run came on a two-out Hicks homer in the eighth.  The Rock Cats put men on first and second with two out in the ninth, but a fly ball ended the game.
Of note:  Eduardo Nunez was 0-for-3.  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-4.

ST. LUCIE AT FORT MYERS

The game was suspended in the top of the fifth with Fort Myers leading 3-2.  Aderlin Mejia is 2-for-2 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Tim Shibuya has gone all the way for the Miracle so far, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

PEORIA 6, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN PEORIA

Batting stars:  Jon Murphy was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Chad Christensen was 0-for-2 with two walks and two runs.  Bryan Haar was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Pitching star:  Todd Van Steensel pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Luis Perez was 1-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs.  Richy Pedroza was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Alex Reyes pitched six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
The game:  Peoria took the lead with two in the first.  Each team scored in the third to leave the Chiefs up 3-1.  Haar singled in a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2, but that was as close as Cedar Rapids would come.  Pedroza doubled in a run in the sixth to make it 4-2 and a two-run triple by Perez in the seventh made it 6-2.  J. D. Williams singled in a run in the ninth and the Kernels did get the tying run up to bat with two out, but a strikeout ended the game.
Of note:  Zack Granite was 0-for-4.  Starter Aaron Slegers pitched six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

ELIZABETHTON 7, BURLINGTON 0 IN BURLINGTON

Batting stars:  Tanner English was 4-for-5 with a home run and two runs.  Nick Gordon was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple, scoring twice and driving in one.  Tyler Kuresa was 2-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching stars:  Sam Gibbons struck out seven in seven innings, giving up one hit and one walk.  Kuo Hua Lo struck out two in two innings, giving up a walk and a hit batsman.
Opposition star:  Meibrys Viloria was 1-for-2 with a walk.
The game:  Gordon doubled in a run in the first.  There was no more scoring until the sixth, when three singles loaded the bases, two runs scored on an error, and a sacrifice fly made it 4-0.  Kuresa singled in a run in the seventh and Elizabethton added two more in the ninth.  The lone Burlington hit came leading off the fifth.  The Royals' biggest scoring threat came in the ninth, when they got a leadoff walk and a man was hit by a pitch with two down.
Of note:  Max Murphy was 1-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch, scoring twice and driving in one.

GCL TWINS 4, GCL ORIOLES 1 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Amuarys Minier was 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch, scoring three times and driving in one.  Nelson Molina was 3-for-4.
Pitching stars:  Matthew Batts struck out five in four shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks.  Onesimo Hernandez struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Zach Hayden pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two walks with one strikeout.
Opposition star:  Austin Pfeiffer was 1-for-4 with a home run.
The game:  Joel Polanco doubled in a run in the second and a run came in on a ground out in the fourth to make the score 2-0.  Doubled by Logan Wade and Minier were followed by singles by Molina and Gabriel Ojeda to plate two runs and give the Twins a 4-0 advantage.  The lone Orioles run came on Pfeiffer's homer leading off the ninth.
Of note:  Dubal Baez was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Manuel Guzman was 1-for-3.

Where They Stand: Through Games of June 25, 2014


Minnesota is 36-40, fourth in the American League Central, seven games behind Detroit.  The Twins are 4-6 in their last ten games and have lost two consecutive games.
Rochester is 43-36, second in the International League North, 5.5 games behind Syracuse.  The Red Wings are 4-6 in their last ten games and lost their most recent game.
New Britain is 41-33, third in the Eastern League Eastern, 7.5 games behind Portland.  The Rock Cats are 9-1 in their last ten games and have won two consecutive games.
Fort Myers is 5-2 in the second half (46-30 overall), tied for second with Bradenton in the Florida State League South, one game behind Palm Beach.  The Miracle have won four consecutive games.
Cedar Rapids is 1-5 in the second half (32-44 overall), eighth in the Midwest League Western, four games behind Wisconsin.  The Kernels have lost three consecutive games.
Elizabethton is 4-3, tied for first in the Appalachian League West with Greeneville, Johnson City, and Kingsport.  The Twins won their most recent game.

NEW BRITAIN 3, ALTOONA 1 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Nate Hanson was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Brandon Waring was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Pitching stars:  Taylor Rogers struck out eleven in eight innings, giving up one run on six hits and a walk.  Matthew Summers pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition star:  John Holdzkom struck out three in two shutout innings, allowing two walks.
The game:  Kyle Knudson had an RBI single in the second to give New Britain a 1-0 lead.  Altoona tied it in the third on a run-scoring single by Drew Maggi.  The Rock Cats had a two-out rally in the fifth, getting a single, a walk, and a two-run double by Waring to go up 3-1.  The Curve did not get a hit after the sixth inning.

FORT MYERS 8, ST. LUCIE 6 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Nate Roberts was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Lance Ray was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-3 with two walks, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching stars:  Alex Wimmers struck out four in four shutout innings of relief, giving up two hits and two walks.  Brandon Peterson pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Aderlin Rodriguez was 3-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Tim Peterson struck out three in two shutout innings, allowing no hits and no walks.
The game:  It started with a bang.  Eudy Pina's two-run single capped a six-run first that put St. Lucie out in front 6-0.  Fort Myers came right back in the bottom of the first, getting five walks and three singles to score five times and cut the lead to 6-5.  Roberts doubled in a run in the fourth to tie it, Ray led off the fifth with a homer to put the Miracle ahead 7-6, Polanco singled in an insurance run in the eighth.  The Mets put their first two men on in the third and loaded the bases with two out in the seventh, but their last seven batters went out.
Of note:  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Max Kepler was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

PEORIA 2, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN PEORIA

Batting stars:  J. D. Williams was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a walk.  Bryan Haar was 2-for-4.
Pitching stars:  Kohl Stewart pitched five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Jared Wilson pitched two shutout innings, giving up three hits with one strikeout.  Chris Mazza pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Mason Katz was 2-for-3 with a home run, his twelfth.  Vaughn Bryan was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Arturo Reyes pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
The game:  Williams doubled and scored in the third, but Bryan singled in a run in the bottom of the third to tie it up.  Katz homered in the fourth to give Peoria a 2-1 lead and it held up the rest of the game.  Williams doubled again leading off the fifth and got to third with two down, but he was the last Cedar Rapids player to reach third base.
Of note:  Zack Granite was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Chad Christensen was 0-for-4.

ELIZABETHTON 8, BURLINGTON 0 IN BURLINGTON

Batting stars:  Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and a hit-by-pitch, scoring twice.  Max Murphy was 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk, scoring twice.  Austin Diemer was 1-for-4 with a home run (his second) and a walk, scoring twice.
Pitching stars:  Stephen Gonsalves struck out nine in six shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks.  Keaton Steele pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.  Jake Reed had a perfect perfect inning, striking out all three batters he faced.
Opposition star:  Niklas Stephenson pitched five shutout innings, allowing three hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
The game:  There was no scoring until the sixth, when a hit batsman, two passed balls, a walk and a Tyler Kuresa RBI double put Elizabethton ahead 2-0.  Murphy homered in the seventh to make it 3-0 and the Twins put the game out of reach with a five-run ninth.  The first run scored on an error, Gordon hit a three-run homer, and Diemer followed with a solo homer.  Gonsalves allowed a one-out single in the first, then retired the next fourteen batters, eight by strikeout, before giving up a leadoff double in the sixth.
Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 1-for-5 with a run.  Kuresa was 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Pat Kelly was 1-for-4 with a run.

GCL TWINS 9, GCL ORIOLES 7 AT ORIOLES

Batting stars:  Nelson Molina was 2-for-3 with two triples, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch, scoring twice and driving in four.  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-2 with two walks and a hit-by-pitch, scoring once and driving in two.  Tyree Davis was 0-for-3 with two walks and three runs.
Pitching stars:  None.
Opposition stars:  Alex Mercedes was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring three times and driving in one.  Daniel Franco was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Gerrion Grim was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.
The game:  A double, a triple, and a double gave the Twins a 2-0 lead in the first.  A Molina two-run triple was part of a four-run second that made it 6-0.  The Orioles got single runs in the second, third, and fourth to cut it to 6-3.  The Twins scored in the fifth, sixth, and eighth without getting a hit in any of those innings to hold off the Orioles comeback.
Of note:  Dubal Baez was 1-for-3 with a double and a hit-by-pitch, scoring twice.  Jarrard Poteete was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk.  Starter Josh Guyer pitched 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  The Twins were out-hit 14-6 but drew nine walks while allowing only one.

ROCHESTER 7, SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 5 IN SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE

Batting stars:  Chris Colabello was 2-for-5 with a double and a home run (his third), driving in two.  Eric Farris was 3-for-5, scoring once and driving in two.  Chris Herrmann was 1-forr-3 with a double annd two walks, scorrinng onnce.
Pitching stars:  Mark Hamburger pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Michael Tonkin pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  John Ryan Murphy was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, driving in three.  Jose Pirela was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer (his seventh) and a walk, scoring twice.
The game:  Murphy doubled in two in the first inning to give S/W-B a 2-0 lead.  Farris hit a two-run single to cap a three-run second that put Rochester in front and Colabello homered in a two-run third to make the score 5-2.  Murphy homered in the fifth to make it 5-3, but Colabello doubled in a run in the seventh to put the lead up to 6-3.  PIrela hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to cut the margin to 6-5, but the Red Wings again rose to the challenge, scoring once in the eighth to go up 7-5.  The last nine Railriders were retired.
Of note:  Deibinson Romero was 1-for-5 with a double.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run.  Starter Logan Darnell struck out six in five innings, but gave up three runs on three hits and five walks.

NEW BRITAIN 5, ALTOONA 2 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Brandon Waring was 2-for-4 with a home run (his seventh) and two runs.  Mike Kvasnicka was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer (his fifth) and a walk.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with a home run, his twelfth.
Pitching stars:  Pat Dean pitched 6.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and no walks with two strikeouts.  Cole Johnson retired all four batters he faced.  Lester Oliveros pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Willy Garcia was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs.  Kelson Brown was 2-for-4.
The game:  Garcia doubled and scored in the top of the second, but Kvasnicka hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to give New Britain a 2-1 lead.  Rodriguez and Waring each homered in the fourth to make it 4-1.  Each team scored once in the seventh, but Altoona did not bring the tying run up to bat after that.

Batting stars:  Stuart Turner was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple, scoring twice and driving in two.  Lance Ray was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run.  Aderlin Mejia was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Pitching stars:  Steven Gruver struck out three in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and two walks.  Mason Melotakis struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Maxx Tissenbaum wass 4-for-5 with two doubless, sscoring once and driving in one.  Thomas Coyle was 3-for-5 with a triple and three runs.  Ariel Soriano was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs.
The game:  The scoring came early.  Patrick Leonard hit a two-run homer to give Charlotte a 2-0 first-inning lead, Max Kepler hit a two-run single in a three-run second to put Fort Myers up 3-2, and Soriano doubled in a run to tie it at three after two.  RBI singles by Turner and Dalton Hicks gave the Miracle a 5-3 lead in the top of the third, but Coyle tripled and scored in the bottom of the third and Tissenbaum doubled in a run in the fifth to tie it at five.  There was no more scoring until the ninth, when Mejia singled in a run.  Soriano tied it up again with an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth.  In the tenth, Travis Harrison doubled and scored on a Turner triple to give Fort Myers a 7-6 advantage.  Coyle singled and stole second with two out in the bottom of the tenth, but a pair of strikeouts ended the game.
Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-5.  Mike Gonzales was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Hicks was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Kepler was 1-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.  Starter D. J. Baxendale pitched 4.2 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and two walks with one strikeout.

PEORIA 3, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN PEORIA

Batting star:  Zack Granite was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
Pitching stars:  Brandon Bixler struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits.  Dallas Gallant pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Rob Kaminsky struck out seven in 5.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits and no walks.  Robert Stock retired all seven batters he faced with two strikeouts.  Kenneth Peoples-Walls was 1-for-4 with a home run, his third.
The game:  An error brought home a Cedar Rapids run in the first, but four singles produced two runs for Peoria in the bottom of the first.  Peoples-Walls homered in the fourth, and that was it for the scoring.  The Kernels had a man on third in both the third and the fourth, but got only one hit after the fifth inning.
Of note:  Chad Christensen was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-3.  Starter Ethan Mildren struck out five in five innings but gave up three runs on six hits and two walks.

PULASKI 9, ELIZABETHTON 8 IN ELIZABETHTON (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Trey Vavra was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Max Murphy was 2-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Tyler Mautner was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching stars:  Starter Michael Cederoth pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Dereck Rodriguez pitched two innings, giving up an unearned run on no hits and one walk.
Opposition stars:  Jay Baum was 2-for-3 with three walks, scoring twice and driving in one.  Carlton Tanabe was 3-for-6 with a double and a run.  Ryan Yarbrough struck out four in three shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk.
The game:  Vavra hit a two-run double as part of a five-run first that gave Elizabethton a 5-0 lead.  Mautner doubled in a run in the second, and it looked like smooth sailing for the Twins.  However, the bats fell silent for the next seven innings while Pulaski chipped away at the lead.  The Mariners got one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth to make it 6-4.  Pulaski rallied again in the eighth, and when Gianfranco Wawoe delivered an RBI single the game was tied at eight.  In the tenth, the first two batters were retired, but a strikeout/wild pitch on what should have been the third out opened the floodgates.  The next four batters singled and the Mariners led 9-6.  Elizabethton finally rallied in the bottom of the tenth, getting two singles, a walk, and another single to make the score 9-8 with two men on and one out.  A ground out moved both runners into scoring position, but a popup ended the game.
Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 2-for-6 with a run and an RBI.  Austin Diemer was 1-for-5 with a double and a run.  Blake Schmit was 1-for-5 with a run.

GCL TWINS 9, GCL ORIOLES 1

Batting stars:  Roberto Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in three.  Dubal Baez was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Joel Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.
Pitching stars:  Starter Wilfredy Loranzo struck out four in three innings, giving up one run on two hits and three walks.  Michael Theofanopolous struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Eduardo Del Rosario struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.
Opposition star:  Andres Aguilar was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, and a walk.
The game:  Two walks and a single put the Orioles on the board in the first, but it was all Twins from there.  The Twins scored three in the second, a two-run double by Baez led to a four-run fourth, and Gonzalez capped the scoring with a two-run double in the eighth.  The Orioles never had more than one man on at a time after the first.
Of note:  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Frank Encarnacion was 0-for-4.  Jarrard Poteete was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Miles Nordgren struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

DSL TWINS 6, DSL ORIOLES1 0 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Jorge Andrade was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Junior Aramante was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.  Eugenio Diaz was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.
Pitching stars:  Luis Hernandez struck out six in five shutout innings, giving up five hits and no walks.  Johan Quezada struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and five walks.  Carlos Aponte struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Ricardo Andujar was 2-for-4.  Victor Mesa pitched three shutout innings, allowing three hits with two strikeouts.
The game:  Aramante had an RBI triple to cap a three-run first for the Twins.  They added three more in the sixth, getting a walk, three singles, another walk, and another single.  The Orioles1 had at least one man on in every inning and left the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh.  They stranded thirteen runners.
Of note:  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.
