Future Plans

There will be no games to report on for the next couple of days.  However, the Caribbean Series and the Australian League playoffs begin on Friday.  God willing, we'll be here Saturday morning to report on them.

Venezuelan League: Game of January 30


MAGALLANES 11, LARA 9 IN MAGALLANES

TwinsDeolis Guerra (Magallanes) pitched two shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk while striking out one.
Game summary: Lara jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Magallanes came back to lead 7-2 after three. Lara cut it to 7-5 in the top of the fourth, but Magallanes got the runs back in the bottom of the fourth to lead 10-5. It was 11-7 after six and stayed that way until the ninth, when Lara got its final two runs. Lara did not get the tying run to the plate.
Lara: Luis Jimenez (Toronto) was 3-for-3 with a double and two home runs, scoring twice and driving in four. Yangervis Solarte (Texas) was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.
Magallanes: Pablo Sandoval (San Francisco) was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a two-run homer, scoring twice. Carlos Maldonado (Washington) was 3-for-3 with a double and a home run, driving in four.

Magallanes wins the best-of-seven series four games to three.

Venezuelan League: Game of January 29

MAGALLANES 7, LARA 3 IN MAGALLANES

Game summary: Magallanes scored four in the second to take a 4-1 lead and made it 7-2 with three in the fourth.
Lara: Ernesto Mejia was 2-for-4 with two doubles. Jose Jimenez (Kansas City) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and two walks.
Magallanes: Eliezer Alfonzo was 2-for-4 and scored once. Ezequiel Carrera was 1-for-2 with a double two walks, scoring twice.

The win for Magallanes evens the best-of-seven series at three games apiece. The deciding game is scheduled for tonight.

Venezuelan League: Game of January 28

LARA 3, MAGALLANES 2 IN LARA (11 INNINGS)

Twins: Deolis Guerra (Magallanes) pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up no runs on one hit and no walks and striking out one.
Game summary: Lara scored once in the first. That held up until the sixth, when Magallanes loaded the bases on two singles and a hit batsman and then received consecutive walks to force in two runs. Lara put together three singles to tie the score in the bottom of the sixth. It stayed that way until the eleventh, when a one-out bases-loaded single by Jose Yepez (Atlanta) brought home Luis Valbuena (Cubs) with the winning run.
Magallanes: Carlos Zambrano struck out five in six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on eight hits and a walk. Hector Gimenez (White Sox) wasx 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.
Lara: Cesar Jimenez (Philadelphia) struck out six in three shutout inning, allowing no hits and one walk. Yepez was 2-for-5 with a double.

Lara leads the best-of-seven series three games to two.

Australian League: Games of January 27

PERTH 11, MELBOURNE 1 IN PERTH

Twins: James Beresford (Melbourne) was 0-for-4.
Game summary: Perth scored two runs in each of the third, fifth, sixth, and seventh, then broke the string with three in the eighth. Melbourne’s lone run came in the ninth.
Melbourne: Carlo Testa (Kansas City) was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Brad Harman was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Perth: Jack Frawley pitched eight shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks. Michael Ohlman (Baltimore) was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.

CANBERRA 11, ADELAIDE 6 IN ADELAIDE

Game summary: It was tied at two after three innings and tied at six after four. Canberra then scored one in the fifth, two in the sixth, and two in the eighth.
Canberra: Jeremy Barnes was 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs. Adam Buschini was 2-for-2 with a two-run homer and two walks, scoring twice.
Adelaide: Ben Lodge was 3-for-5, scoring twice and driving in one. Ji-Man Choi (Seattle) was 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, driving in two.

BRISBANE AT SYDNEY

PENNANT RACE UPDATE

Canberra finished first with a record of 27-19. Sydney is second at 26-19 and Perth is third at 25-21. Those three teams will go to the playoffs.

PLAYOFF SCHEDULE

Sydney and Perth will play a best-of-three series beginning February 1. The winner will play Canberra in a best-of-three series beginning February 8.

Venezuelan League: Games of January 27

Sunday was an off-day in the Venezuelan League playoffs.  Magallanes and Lara are tied at two wins apiece in the best-of-seven series.

Australian League: Games of January 26

BRISBANE 4, SYDNEY 2 IN SYDNEY


Twins: Rory Rhodes (Brisbane) was 0-for-3 with a walk. Logan Wade (Brisbane) was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. JaDamion Williams (Sydney) was 1-for-4.
Game summary: Brisbane scored all four runs in the fourth. Sydney scored both runs in the eighth. They never got the tying run on base.
Brisbane: James Schult pitched seven shutout innings, giving up two hits and three walks. David Sutherland was 2-for-4 and scored once.
Sydney: Chris Oxspring (Detroit) struck out eight in seven innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks. Luke Wilkins struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks.

PERTH 6, MELBOURNE 2 IN PERTH

Twins: James Beresford (Melbourne) was 1-for-5 with an RBI. Joshua Hendricks (Melbourne) was 2-for-4.
Game summary: Perth scored two in the first to take the lead, then scored two in the fifth to go up 6-1.
Melbourne: Darryl George (Tampa Bay) was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Elliot Biddle was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Perth: David Amberson was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two. Luke Hughes was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk, scoring twice.

CANBERRA 12, ADELAIDE 2 IN ADELAIDE

Game summary: Canberra scored two in the first, led 5-0 after two, and was never threatened.
Canberra: Ryan Stovall (Arizona) was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, and a walk, scoring three times and driving in three. Jeremy Barnes was 3-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.
Adelaide: Ji-Man Choi (Seattle) was 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Quincy Latimore (Pittsburgh) was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Mexican League: Game of January 26

OBREGON 16, MEXICALI 3 IN OBREGON


Game summary: Obregon scored five in the first and led 12-2 after three.
Mexicali: Wes Bankson was 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk. Rodolfo Aguirre pitched two shutout innings, giving up no hits and one walk.
Obregon: David Reyes pitched four shutout innings of relief, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out three. Barbaro Canizares was 3-for-4 with a home run, scoring twice and driving in two.

Obregon takes the Mexican League championship, sweeping Mexicali four games to none.

Venezuelan League: Game of January 26

Game summary: Magallanes scored two in the second and led the rest of the way, but never by much. Lara scored two in the eighth to cut the lead to 6-5 and had the tying run on base with two out, but their last four batters were retired.

Game summary: Sydney scored five in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead.

Sydney: Brad Thomas struck out eight in six innings, allowing five hits and no walks. Chris Snelling was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.

Game summary: Canberra led 7-3 after 4 ½. Adelaide cut it to 7-6 after six and 8-7 after seven. In the ninth, Adelaide had the tying run on second with one out and on third with two out.

With two games left in the regular season, Sydney leads Canberra by one game. In the battle for the third and final playoff spot, Perth leads Brisbane by one game and Adelaide by two games.

Twins: Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was 1-for-4. Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 1-for-4. Nelvin Fuentes (Mayaguez) pitched one inning, giving up one run on no hits and two walks.
Game summary: Caguas scored six runs in the first inning, led 7-1 after five, and 11-3 after seven.
Caguas: Kelvin Villa struck out four in five innings, giving up one run on six hits and two walks. Andy Gonzalez was 3-for-5 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.
Mayaguez: Angel Sanchez was 2-for-4 and scored once. Randy Fontanez allowed an unearned run on a hit and a walk in 3.1 innings, striking out two.

Caguas wins the Puerto Rican League championship, taking the best-of-seven series four games to two.

Mexican League: Game of January 25

OBREGON 6, MEXICALI 5 IN OBREGON

Game summary: Obregon led 5-0 after five, but Mexicali rallied to score five times in the sixth. It stayed tied at five until the bottom of the ninth, when a single and a passed ball put the winning run on third with one out. A pair of intentional walks loaded the bases, followed by a hit batsman to bring in the winning run.
Mexicali: Mike Benacka (Toronto) retired all seven batters he faced, five by strikeout. Ruben Rivera was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer.
Obregon: Doug Clark was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored twice. Carlos Valencia was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer.

Obregon leads the best-of-seven series three games to none.

Game summary: Lara scored two in the first and led 4-0 after five. Magallanes rallied for both runs in the ninth, but the tying run did not come to bat.

Game summary: Sydney broke a scoreless tie with five in the third and was never threatened.
Brisbane: Cody Clark was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk and scored once. Robert Boothe struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Sydney: Craig Anderson allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks in seven innings. James Robbins (Detroit) was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.

PERTH 4, MELBOURNE 3 IN PERTH

Twins: James Beresford (Melbourne) was 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a sacrifice bunt, scoring once and driving in one. Joshua Hendricks (Melbourne) was 1-for-5 and scored once. Lewis Thorpe (Melbourne) struck out five in 5.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks.
Game summary: Perth scored two in the ninth to win. Corey Adamson (San Diego) hit a single-plus-error to bring home both the tying and winning runs.
Melbourne: Brad Harman was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. James Brooks (Washington) was 2-for-4.
Perth: Anthony Claggett struck out fourteen in six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk. Adamson was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

ADELAIDE 4, CANBERRA 3 IN ADELAIDE

Game summary: Stefan Welch (Pittsburgh) hit a two-run homer for Adelaide in the eighth to break a 2-2 tie. Canberra scored once in the ninth and briefly had the tying run on base with none out, but he was erased by a double play.
Canberra: Brian Grening struck out five in six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk. Jack Murphy (Toronto) was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.
Adelaide: Dushan Ruzic allowed two runs on six hits and two walks in eight innings. Welch was 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs.

Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide are all within one game for the third and final playoff spot. The regular season ends January 27. The playoffs begin January 31.

Game summary: Mayaguez took a 1-0 lead in the third, but Caguas came back with two in the fourth and two in the fifth. Magaguez got a run in the eighth and had the tying run at bat with one out, but their last five batters were retired.
Mayaguez: Angel Sanchez (White Sox) was 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two RBIs. Jason Urquidez retired all seven batters he faced, striking out two.
Caguas: Michael Nix struck out six in six innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks. Carlos Rivera was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.

Caguas takes a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Mexican League: Game of January 23

Game summary: Mexicali scored two in the first, but that was it. Obregon tied it with two in the third, took the lead in the seventh on Juan Miranda home run, and got an insurance run in the eighth.
Obregon: Rolando Valdez struck out five in six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks. Alfredo Amezaga (Dodgers) was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.
Mexicali: Jorge Guzman was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Oscar Villareal struck out two in two shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk.

Obregon leads the best-of-seven series two games to none.

Lara: Paulo Orlando (Kansas City) was 3-for-5 and scored once. Robert Perez was 2-for-3. All eight Lara hits were singles.
Magallanes: Pablo Sandoval (San Francisco) was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Endy Chavez (Kansas City) was 2-for-4 with a home run and scored twice.

Magallanes takes the lead in the best-of-seven series one game to none.

MAYAGUEZ 6, CAGUAS 5 IN MAYAGUEZ (11 INNINGS)


Twins: Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 1-for-4 with a double and two walks and scored once. Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was 1-for-5 with a double. Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 0-for-5. Nelvin Fuentes (Mayaguez) gave up one run on one hit and no walks in 1.1 innings, striking out two.
Game summary: Mayaguez scored two in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Caguas came back with two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Mayaguez went up 5-4 in the eighth, but Caguas tied it at five in the ninth. Mayaguez had two out and none on in the eleventh. They then drew two walks and the winning run scored on an error.
Caguas: Jorge Padilla was 2-for-2 and scored once. Miguel Abreu was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Mayaguez: Irving Falu (Kansas City) was 2-for-6 with a double and an RBI. Randy Ruiz (White Sox) was 1-for-3 with a double and three walks, scoring the winning run and driving in one.

Mayaguez has evened the best-of-seven series two games apiece.

Dominicai League: Game of January 22

ESCOGIDO 3, AGUILAS 0 IN AGUILAS


Game summary: Escogido scored two in the second and one in the seventh.
Escogido: Kris Johnson (Pittsburgh) struck out six in five innings, giving up four hits and a walk. Fernando Tatis was 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, and three RBIs.
Aguilas: Lorenzo Barcelo struck out four in 4.1 innings of relief, allowing five hits and no walks. Hector Luna was 3-for-4.

Escogido sweeps the best-of-nine series five games to none.

Mexican League: Game of January 22

Game summary: Obregon scored three in the first and led 4-0 after three. Mexicali scored in the eighth to make it 5-3 and had the tying run on base with one out.
Obregon: Luis Mendoza (Kansas City) struck out eleven in six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks. Doug Clark was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored three times.
Mexicali: Oscar Robles was 3-for-5 with a double and scored once. Yuniesky Betancourt was 2-for-5 with a triple and a home run and drove in two.

Obregon takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of- seven series.

Venezuelan League: Games of January 22


There were no games played in the Venezuelan League yesterday. Lara and Magallanes will play a best-of-seven series beginning tonight to determine the league champion.

Australian League: Where They Stand

There are four games left in the Australian League regular season. Here are the standings:

Melbourne, 15-27

The top three teams make the playoffs. The second place team plays the third place team, with the winner taking on the first place team.

Puerto Rican League: Games of January 21

There were no games played in the Puerto Rican League championship series yesterday. Caguas leads Mayaguez two games to one in the best-of-seven series.

Dominican League: Game of January 21

ESCOGIDO 3, AGUILAS 2 IN ESCOGIDO (11 INNINGS)


Game summary: Escogido scored two in the fifth to tie the score at two. It stayed that way until the eleventh, when Jesus Feliciano led off with a single, went to second on a bunt, and scored on an error.
Aguilas: Miguel Tejada (Kansas City) was 3-for-4 with a double. Elian Herrera (Dodgers) was 3-for-5 with a double and scored once.
Escogido: Daniel Cabrera struck out four in four innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits and a walk. Starling Marte (Pittsburgh) was 2-for-5 with a walk and an RBI.

Escogido leads the best-of-nine series four games to none.

Mexican League: Games of January 21

There were no games in the Mexican League yesterday. The league championship series will begin tonight, as Obregon and Mexicali play game one of a best-of-seven series.

Venezuelan League: Games of January 21

ANZOATEGUI 6, ZULIA 3 IN ZULIA


Twins: Dakota Watts (Anzoategui) gave up two unearned runs in two-thirds of an inning, giving up one hit and two walks.
Game summary: Zulia led 3-2 after seven when Anzoategui rallied for three runs on four singles and a sacrifice fly. Anzoategui added an insurance run in the ninth.
Anzoategui: Starter Dennys Reyes pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks. Luis Ugueto (San Diego) was 3-for-5 with a triple and scored three times.
Zulia: Freddy Parejo was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored twice. Jose Garcia was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

MAGALLANES 4, CARACAS 1 IN MAGALLANES

Twins: Deolis Guerra (Magallanes) pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Game summary: Magallanes scored three in the first and one in the seventh. The lone Caracas run came in the ninth.
Caracas: Ronald Bermudez (Boston) was 3-for-4 with a double and scored once. Jose Duarte was 1-for-3 with a double.
Magallanes: Fabio Castro struck out seven in five innings, allowing two hits and three walks. Juan Rivera was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer.

The regular season ends with Lara and Magallanes tied for first at 10-6. There was nothing on the schedule for what happens next, but presumably those two teams will have some sort of playoff. We will let you know more when we find out more.

Twins: JaDamion Williams (Sydney) was 0-for-5. Tim Atherton (Sydney)struck out six in five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks. Tyler Herr (Sydney) gave up an unearned run in 2.1 innings on one hit and one walk and struck out one.
Game summary: Sydney scored in the ninth to tie it at three. The winning run scored on an error in the twelfth.
Sydney: Trent D’Antonio (Miami) was 3-for-5 with a triple, a walk, and an RBI. Shane Benson was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.
Canberra: John Holdzkom struck out seven in six shutout innings, allowing two hits and three walks. Ryan Stovall (Arizona) was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and a walk and scored three times.

ADELAIDE 9, MELBOURNE 0 IN MELBOURNE

Twins: James Beresford (Melbourne) was 0-for-3. Joshua Hendricks (Melbourne) was used as a pinch-hitter and was 1-for-1.

Game summary: Leading 2-1, Brisbane scored four in the fourth to take control.
Perth: Scott Mitchinson pitched three shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out two. Tim Kennelly (Philadelphia) was 1-for-3 with a walk and scored twice.

Game summary: Obregon scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 3-0 lead. Culican scored once in the top of the seventh, but Obregon came back with four in the bottom of the seventh to put the game away.

Game summary: Anzoategui led 4-1 after five. Lara cut it to 4-3 after six and it was tied at five after seven. Lara then scored six runs in the eighth to take control.

Puerto Rican League: Games of January 14

There were no games played in the Puerto Rican League playoffs this day. Here are the standings:

There are two games remaining in the round-robin portion of the playoffs. The top two teams will play a best-of-seven series to determine the league champion.

ORIENTE 7, AGUILAS 3 IN AGUILAS

Twins: Luis Perdomo (Aguilas) pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Game summary: Aguilas led 3-0 after four. Oriente tied it with three in the sixth and scored four in the seventh to take control. Eliezer Mesa hit a three-run homer to give Oriente the lead.
Oriente: Luis Jimenez (Angels) was 3-for-5 with a double and a two-run homer. Robinzon Diaz was 2-for-4 and scored once.

Australian League: Games of January 11

Folks, I messed up.  The games I reported yesterday were actually the games of January 12, because of the time difference.  I changed the title on the previous post, and am reporting the games of January 11 here.  Tomorrow we'll get back on the normal schedule.

Game summary: All the runs were scored in the second inning.
Canberra: Ryan Stovall (Arizona) was 2-for-4 and scored once. Eric Massingham pitched two perfect innings.
Brisbane: James Albury struck out ten in a complete game, allowing one run on five hits and three walks. Brad Dutton was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.

No games were played in the Mexican League playoffs, as it was an off day between the first round and the second round. We now know that Obregon is the losing team that gets to advance anyway, although I still don’t know how this was determined. The matchups for the second round, which begins today, are Obregon v. Culiacan and Mexicali v. Guasave.

ANZOATEGUI 16, ZULIA 3 IN ANZOATEGUI

Twins: Oswaldo Arcia (Anzoategui) was 3-for-4 with a home run and a walk, scoring four times.
Game summary: Anzoategui scored six runs in the first and led 11-2 after four.
Zulia: Henry Rodriguez (Cincinnati( was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Eduardo Perez hit a home run in his only at-bat.
Anzoategui: Luis Nunez was 4-for-5 with three doubles and scored twice. Niuman Romero (Baltimore) was 4-for-6 with a home run, scoring twice and driving in three.

MAGALLANES 11, CARACAS 10 IN MAGALLANES (10 INNINGS)

Game summary: Caracas led 6-3 after 2 ½. Magallanes led 8-6 after four. Caracas led 10-8 after five. Magallanes tied it at ten in the seventh. The winning run came on an RBI single by Mario Lisson with two out.
Caracas: Josh Kroger was 3-for-4 with a double and two walks, scoring once and driving in two. Luis Rodriguez (Angels) was 2-for-5 with a double and a walk and scored three times.

Australian League: Games of January 10

SYDNEY 13, MELBOURNE 3 IN SYDNEY

Twins: James Beresford (Melbourne) was 1-for-5 with two RBIs.
Game summary: Each team scored once in the third and once in the fifth. Melbourne scored once in the top of the sixth, but Sydney scored eight in the bottom of the sixth to take control of the game.
Melbourne: Josh Davies was 2-for-3 and scored once. Jarryd Rogers was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Sydney: Mitch Dening (Boston) was 3-for-5 with a home run, scoring twice and driving in three. Geoffrey Klein (St. Louis) was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, scoring once.

ADELAIDE 5, PERTH 2 IN PERTH

Game summary: Adelaide scored three in the second, then added single runs in the seventh and eighth. Perth scored both runs in the ninth.
Adelaide: Zachary Fuesser (Pittsburgh) struck out eight in five shutout innings, giving up four hits and two walks. Angus Roeger was 1-for-3 with a walk and scored twice.

Twins: Samuel Deduno (Aguilas) gave up three runs (one earned) on one hit and five walks with five strikeouts in four innings.
Game summary: Aguilas led 6-1 after four, but Escogido scored two in the fifth and three in the seventh to tie. Aguilas came back with one in the eighth to take the lead and five in the ninth to put it away.
Aguilas: Miguel Tejada (Kansas City) was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one. Leury Garcia (Texas) was 3-for-5 with a triple and scored twice.
Escogido: Julio Lugo was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored once. Ramon Garcia (Detroit) pitched two perfect innings.

ORIENTE 4, ESTE 3 IN ESTE

Twins: Ray Olmedo (Oriente) was used as a defensive replacement and did not bat.
Game summary: Este led 3-0 after four. Oriente scored two in the sixth and took the lead with two in the eighth. The go-ahead run scored on a bases-loaded walk.
Oriente: Felix Pie was 2-for-5 with a double and scored once. Alex Valdez was 2-for-4.
Este: Esteban German was 3-for-5 with a triple. Alberto Cabrera allowed two unearned runs on five hits and two walks in 5.1 innings.

Game summary: Guasave scored three in the second and never trailed. Obregon cut the lead to 3-2 and 4-3 but could never catch up.
Obregon: Carlos Valencia was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Doug Clark was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored once.
Guasave: Jose Felix (Texas) was 2-for-3 with a double. Eduardo Arredondo was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

MEXICALI 7, MAZATLAN 0 IN MEXICALI

Game summary: Mexicali scored two in the second and five in the fifth.

Guasave and Mexicali join Culiacan in the second round of the playoffs.  One of the losing teams will join them there, but I don't yet know which one.  The second round is scheduled to start Saturday, so we should know soon.

Twins: Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 3-for-6 with two doubles and scored twice. Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a home run, scoring three times and driving in four. Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 1-for-4 with a walk.
Game summary: Carolina scored in the first, but Mayaguez tied it in the second, took the lead with five in the third, then solidified it with three in the fourth.
Mayaguez: Yasiel Puig (Dodgers) was 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Martin Maldonado (Milwaukee) was 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, and a walk, scoring three times and driving in three.
Carolina: Juan Caballero (St. Louis) allowed one run on four hits and no walks while striking out three in four innings. Leslie Anderson (Tampa Bay) was 2-for-4 and scored once.
