Games of April 29


Another sweep for Twins affiliates!  Two monster innings in New Britain!  Jose  Berrios shines in Cedar Rapids!

ROCHESTER 4, BUFFALO 3 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Ray Olmedo was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored once.  Chris Herrmann and Doug Bernier were each 2-for-4.
Pitching stars:  Virgil Vasquez pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk.  Luis Perdomo pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Luis Jimenez was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, scoring once and driving in two.  Moises Sierra was 2-for-4 and scored once.  Andy LaRoche was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Key inning:  The eighth.  The score was tied at three.  With out out Nathan Hanson doubled and was replaced by pinch-runner Eric Farris.  Brandon Boggs singled Farris home with the go-ahead run.

NEW BRITAIN 16, HARRISBURG 8 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Daniel Ortiz was 4-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in three.  Josmil Pinto was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring three times and driving in two.  Antoan Richardson was 3-for-6 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in two.
Pitching stars:  Blake Martin pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks.  Bruce Pugh pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Edgar Ibarra pitched a scoreless ninth, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Brian Goodwin was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple and scored once.  Justin Bloxom was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Jerad Head was 2-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.
Key inning #1:  The fourth.  Trailing 5-0, the Rock Cats scored ten runs.  They got eleven hits, four doubles and seven singles.  Key hits included a two-run double by Richardson and a two-run single by James Beresford.  Fifteen men batted in the inning.
Key inning #2:  The seventh.  Harrisburg had come back to cut the lead to 10-8 when New Britain scored six more.  The Rock Cats got two walks, an error, and five hits, three of them doubles.  Key hits included a two-run single by Danny Santana and a two-run double by Pinto.

FORT MYERS 5, CLEARWATER 4 IN CLEARWATER

Batting stars:  Stephen Wickens was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, driving in two.  Miguel Sano was 2-for-4 and scored once.
Pitching stars:  Tom Stuifbergen pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit, before leaving with what appeared to be an injury to his right leg.  Reliever Nelvin Fuentes retired all ten men he faced, striking out five.
Opposition stars:  Gabriel Arias struck out four in five shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks.  Cameron Perkins was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.
Key inning:  The ninth.  The Miracle trailed 4-2.  Eddie Rosario led off the inning with a walk and Sano doubled to put the tying run into scoring position with none out.  The next two batters struck out and it appeared the chance might be lost.  Matt Koch then reached on an error, plating one run, and Wickens delivered a two-run triple to give Fort Myers the lead.

CEDAR RAPIDS 9, LANSING 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Jorge Polanco was 3-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in three.  Byron Buxton was 1-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring three times and driving in one.
Pitching stars:  Jose Berrios struck out eight in 6.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks.  Josh Burris struck out three in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk.
Opposition stars:  Dalton Pompey tripled and scored the lone Lugnut run.
Key inning:  The fifth.  The Kernels led 2-0 after three, but Lansing scored to make it 2-1.  Cedar Rapids responded with a five-run fifth.  Buxton drew a one-out walk.  Then, with two out, the Kernels hit for the cycle in order.  Polanco singled, Dalton Hicks doubled, Adam Walker tripled, and Travis Harrison homered, giving Cedar Rapids a 7-1 lead.

Players of the Week: April 22-28, 2013


Rochester:  Evan Bigley was 11-for-26 with two doubles, a home run, and four walks.  For the season, he is hitting .394/.512/.545 in 33 at-bats.

New Britain:  Jonathan Goncalves was 6-for-19 with a double, a triple, and two home runs.  For the season, he is hitting .265/.316/559 in 34 at-bats.

Fort Myers:  Miguel Sano was 8-for-25 with a triple, three homers, and two walks.  For the season, he is hitting .360/.420/742 in 89 at-bats.  Eddie Rosario was 9-for-26 with a double, two triples, a home run, and a walk.  For the season, he is hitting .351./381/.546 in 97 at-bats.  Taylor Rogers made two starts and went 2-0, 1.80, 0.87 WHIP, giving up eleven hits and two walks in fifteen innings.

Cedar Rapids:  Adam Walker was 8-for-21 with a double, a triple, and five home runs.  For the season, he is hitting .297/.373/.608 in 74 at-bats.

Evan Bigley continues to hit.  A good day for Eddie Rosario.  Trevor May and Jose Berrios pitch tonight.

BUFFALO 5, ROCHESTER 3 IN BUFFALO

Batting stars:  Evan Bigley was 3-for-4 with a double.  Chris Herrmann was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Daniel Turpen struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.  Tyler Robertson struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Moises Sierra was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Ryan Langerhans was 2-for-4 with a home run.  Anthony Gose was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.
Key inning:  The sixth.  The Red Wings trailed 5-1.  Ray Olmedo walked and scored on a one-out double by Chris Colabello.  A walk to Brian Dinkelman and singles by Joe Benson and Herrmann made the score 5-3 and loaded the bases, still with one out.  However, Bigley and Doug Bernier each popped up to end the threat.

RICHMOND 4, NEW BRITAIN 2 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Danny Santana was 2-for-4 with a double.  Dan Rohlfing was 2-for-4 and scored once.  Curt Smith was 1-for-2 with two walks and scored once.
Pitching star:  Aaron Thompson pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Andrew Susac was 2-for-4 with a home run.  Joe Panik was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Tom Vessella pitched four shutout innings of relief, allowing no hits and one walk.
Key inning:  The third.  It was a scoreless tie.  With one out, Ehire Adrianza doubled and scored on Panik's triple.  Javier Herrera then singled in Panik to make the score 2-0.  The Rock Cats never got closer than two runs.

FORT MYERS 8, CLEARWATER 7 IN CLEARWATER

Batting stars:  Eddie Rosario was 2-for-4 with a home run (his third), a double, and a walk, scoring three times and driving in two.  Angel Morales was 2-for-4 with a home run (his first) and a walk, scoring twice.  Miguel Sano was 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Taylor Rogers pitched eight innings, giving up three runs on six hits and no walks.
Opposition stars:  Cameron Perkins was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Maikel Franco was 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run homer, scoring twice.  Josh Ludy was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer.
Key inning:  The ninth.  In the top of the inning, Rosario hit a seemingly meaningless home run, putting the Miracle up 8-2.  They needed it.  In the bottom of the inning, a double and Franco's homer made it 8-4.  With one out, Perkins doubled and scored on a two-out single by Harold Martinez.  Ludy then hit a two-run homer to make it 8-7.  Adrian Salcedo, who had given up everything in the inning but the leadoff double, rallied to strike out Kyrell Hudson to end the game.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, LANSING 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Jorge Polanco was 3-for-4 with an RBI.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching stars:  Tyler Duffey pitched eight innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and no walks.  Tyler Jones struck out two in a perfect ninth.
Opposition stars:  Dalton Pompey was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and two RBIs.  Kellen Sweeney was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run.
Key inning:  The eighth.  The score was tied at three.  The first two Kernels went out.  Niko Goodrum walked, followed by singles by Polanco and Dalton Hicks to bring Goodrum in with the go-ahead run.

Games of April 27


Twins affiliates sweep for the third consecutive day! Two of the wins are walk-offs! A fine outing by Kyle Gibson!

ROCHESTER 1, BUFFALO 0 IN ROCHESTER

Batting star: Evan Bigley was 2-for-3 with a double and scored once.
Pitching stars: Kyle Gibson struck out seven in 6.2 innings, giving up two hits and two walks. Caleb Thielbar retired all four batters he faced, striking out three of them. Tim Wood pitched a perfect ninth with a strikeout.
Opposition star: Starter Buddy Carlyle struck out seven in four shutout innings, allowing two hits and no walks.
Key inning: The fifth. In a scoreless tie Bigley led off the inning with a double and Joe Benson was hit by a pitch. Doug Bernier advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Eric Farris hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the only run of the game.

NEW BRITAIN 4, RICHMOND 2 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars: Josmil Pinto was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, his fifth. James Beresford was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Pitching stars: B. J. Hermsen gave up only one run in 4.2 innings despite giving up nine hits and a walk. Jose Gonzalez struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk. Michael Tonkin struck out two in a scoreless ninth, giving up only a walk.
Opposition stars: Mark Minicozzi was 4-for-4 with a walk. Brett Krill was 3-for-5 with two doubles. Joe Panik was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk and scored once.
Key inning: The ninth. Richmond trailed 4-1. A walk, a single, and an error made it 4-2 and put runners on second and third with none out. Tonkin came in to replace Edgar Ibarra and issued another walk, loading the bases. He then struck out Jarrett Parer and Andrew Susac and got Krill to ground out to end the game.

FORT MYERS 2, CHARLOTTE 1 IN FORT MYERS

Batting star: Angel Morales was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, driving in two.
Pitching stars: Matthew Summers pitched seven innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks. Taylor Rogers struck out two in a scoreless eighth, giving up one hit. Cole Johnson struck out one in a perfect ninth.
Opposition star: Felipe Rivero struck out six in six shutout innings, allowing one hit and three walks.
Key inning: The ninth. The score was tied at one. Miguel Sano led off the inning with a walk. With one out, Kennys Vargas and Kyle Knudson walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Morales walked to force in the winning run.

CEDAR RAPIDS 8, GREAT LAKES 7 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars: Niko Goodrum was 2-for-4 with two walks and scored twice. Candido Pimentel was 2-for-4 with a walk. Adam Walker was 1-for-4 with two walks and a three-run homer, his sixth, scoring twice.
Pitching star: Tim Atherton struck out five in 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and one walk.
Opposition stars: Corey Seager was 3-for-5 with a double and two two-run homers, scoring three times. Eric Smith was 2-for-5 with a double and scored once. Jharel Cotton struck out six in 4.1 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits and two walks.
Key inning: The ninth. Trailing 7-4, Goodrum walked, Dalton Hicks reached on an error, and Walker hit a three-run homer to tie the game with one out. That sent the game into extra innings, leading to an RBI single by Travis Harrison to win the game.

Twins affiliates sweep for the second consecutive day!  A huge day for Adam Walker!  Miguel Sano hits his ninth!

ROCHESTER 4, SYRACUSE 2 IN SYRACUSE

Batting stars:  Joe Benson was 2-for-4 with a triple and a home run, scoring twice.  Eric Farris was 2-for-5 with a double.  Chris Herrmann was 2-for-5, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching star:  P. J. Walters pitched 6.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks.
Opposition stars:  Ryan Perry pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks.
Key inning:  The eighth.  The Chiefs had scored in the seventh to cut the Red Wings lead to 2-1.  Herrmann singled to lead off the eighth and scored on a Chris Colabello double to restore the two-run lead.

NEW BRITAIN 7, RICHMOND 4 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Josmil Pinto was 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in one.  Dan Rohlfing was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Antoan Richardson was 1-for-3 with two walks and scored three times.
Pitching star:  A. J. Achter struck out the side in the ninth.
Opposition stars:  Jarrett Parker was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored twice.  Andrew Susac was 2-for-4.
Key inning:  The sixth.  The Rock Cats trailed 3-1.  Richardson walked, took second on a bunt, stole third, and scored on a Mark Sobolewski single.  A single by Pinto, an error, and a Rohlfing single scored two more runs to give New Britain a 4-3 lead.

FORT MYERS 10, CHARLOTTE 4 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Andy Leer was 2-for-4 with a walk and a home run, his second.  Miguel Sano was 1-for-4 with a walk and a three-run homer (his ninth), scoring twice.  Eddie Rosario was 2-for-5 with a triple, scoring once and driving in two.
Pitching star:  Nelvin Fuentes retired all four batters he faced.
Opposition stars:  Alejandro Segovia was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, scoring three times.  Shay Crawford allowed one hit in two shutout innings.
Key inning:  The third.  Leading 1-0, the Miracle put together a five-run rally.  The first five batters reached base:  Angel Morales walked, Adam Pettersen singled, Levi Michael doubled, Rosario singled, and Sano killed the rally with a home run.

CEDAR RAPIDS 13, GREAT LAKES 8 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Adam Walker was 3-for-4 with a walk and his first two home runs of the year, a three-run shot and a grand slam.   Jorge Polanco was 3-for-4 with a walk and scored three times.  Candido Pimentel was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching star:  David Hurlbut struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Jesmuel Valentin was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple, scoring twice and driving in two.  Pat Stover was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  James Baldwin was 3-for-4 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in two.
Key inning:  The fourth.  Great Lakes scored twice in the top of the inning on three doubles and a single to cut the Kernels lead to 5-4.  Cedar Rapids came back with six in the bottom of the inning.  J. D. Williams led off the inning with a home run.  Three walks followed, then Walker hit a grand slam.  Two singles and a hit batsman re-loaded the bases with two out, and a walk to Byron Buxton forced in the sixth run of the inning.

Where They Stand: Through Games of April 25


A regular Thursday feature, except for when it appears on Friday or some other day.

Rochester is 7-14, sixth (last) in the International League North, eight games behind Buffalo.  The Red Wings are 5-5 in their last ten games and have won two consecutive games.

New Britain is 10-10, fifth in the Eastern League Eastern, 1.5 games behind Portland and Reading.  The Rock Cats are 5-5 in their last ten games and have won one consecutive game.

Fort Myers is 16-4, first in the Florida State League South, four games ahead of Palm Beach and St. Lucie.  The Miracle is 6-4 in its last ten games and has won two consecutive games.

Cedar Rapids is 13-5, first in the Midwest League Western, two games ahead of Quad Cities.  The Kernels are 7-3 in their last ten games and have won four consecutive games.

Games of April 25


A big night for Byron Buxton.  Five hits for Doug Bernier.  Sano hits his eighth.

ROCHESTER 10, SYRACUSE 5 IN SYRACUSE (11 INNINGS--COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

Batting stars:  Chris Herrmann was 4-for-6 with two runs and three RBIs.  Evan Bigley was 2-for-4 with a home run (his first) and scored twice.  Chris Colabello was 2-for-5 with a walk and scored twice.
Pitching stars:  Tyler Robertson struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks.  Tim Wood pitched two perfect innings.  Syracuse did not score after the fourth inning.
Opposition stars:  Ryan Tatusko allowed one run on four hits and a walk in six innings.  Chris Marrero and Chris Rahl were each 2-for-5, and each hit a two-run homer.
Key inning:  The eighth.  The Red Wings trailed 5-1.  The first four batters reached base, including a two-run single by Herrmann, to make it 5-3 and put runners on second and third.  A ground out resulted in one run, and a two-out double by Joe Benson tied the score.  That ultimately sent the game to extra innings, where a five-run eleventh (highlighted by a three-run triple by Brandon Boggs) put the game away.

ROCHESTER 10, SYRACUSE 7 IN SYRACUSE (REGULARLY SCHEDULED GAME)

Batting stars:  Doug Bernier was 5-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in four.  Brian Dinkelman was 4-for-5 with three doubles and scored twice.  Joe Benson was 2-for-4 with a triple and a walk and scored four times.
Pitching stars:  Shairon Martis gave up two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out four in five innings.  Luis Perdomo struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Daniel Turpen retired all five batters he faced.
Opposition stars:  Zach Walters was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.  Will Rhymes was 2-for-4 with a walk and scored once.  Jeff Kobernus was 2-for-5 and scored twice.
Key inning:  The seventh.  Syracuse had just scored five in the sixth to tie the game at seven.  Dinkelman doubled with one out, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Bernier single to put the Red Wings back in front.

NEW BRITAIN 4, NEW HAMPSHIRE 1 IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Batting stars:  Dan Rohlfing was 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jonathan Goncalves was 2-for-3 and scored once.  Josmil Pinto was 2-for-4.
Pitching stars:  Alex Meyer struck out seven in six innings, giving up one run on eight hits and a walk.  Aaron Thompson pitched two shutout innings despite giving up three hits.  Michael Tonkin gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning.
Opposition stars:  Ricardo Nanita was 3-for-4 and scored once.  Austin Bibens-Dirkx struck out seven in 6.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on ten hits but no walks.
Key inning:  The seventh.  The score was tied at one.  Rohlfing and Goncalves led off the inning with singles, but the next two batters went out.  Mark Sobolewski then delivered an RBI single, and an error allowed a second run to score and put the Rock Cats up 3-1.

FORT MYERS 5, CHARLOTTE 3 IN CHARLOTTE

Batting stars:  Eddie Rosario was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Levi Michael was 2-for-4 with two triples, scoring twice and driving in one.  Adam Pettersen was 2-for-5 with a double and scored once.
Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale struck out five in six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks.  Dakota Watts pitched a scoreless inning despite giving up two hits and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Jeff Malm was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.  Nate Garcia struck out three in two perfect innings.
Key inning:  The fifth.  The Miracle led 4-0 after two and a half, but the Stone Crabs had cut it to 4-2 after four.  Miguel Sano hit a one-out homer, his eighth, to give Fort Myers a three-run lead.

CEDAR RAPIDS 16, GREAT LAKES 7 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Key inning:  The sixth.  a 5-0 Kernels lead had been cut to 6-4.  Buxton led off the inning with a double, Jorge Polanco drew a one-out walk, and Walker hit a two-out, three-run homer to increase the lead to 9-4.

Key inning:  The sixth.  Leading 1-0, New Hampshire scored twice.  The first run came when Pillar singled, took second on a bunt, and scored on an error.  Ryan Schimpf homered to make it 3-0.

SYRACUSE 8, ROCHESTER 7 IN SYRACUSE (13 INNINGS)

Batting stars: Clete Thomas was 3-for-6 with a home run, his third, and scored twice. Eric Farris was 3-for-7 with a home run, his first, and scored twice. Nathan Hanson was 2-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer, his first.
Pitching star: Virgil Vasquez pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk.
Opposition stars: Tanner Roark struck out four in 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing only one hit. Eury Perez was 4-for-7 with a double, scoring once and driving in two. Micah Owings was 3-for-5 with a home run and two walks.
Key inning: The thirteenth. The score was tied at seven. Jeff Kobernus led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on an error, took third on a bunt, and scored on a single by Jimmy Van Ostrand to end the game. The run was scored off Michael O'Connor in his second inning of work.

Key inning: The fourth. Leading 1-0, the Miracle came up with four runs. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out. A Lance Ray sacrifice fly made it 2-0 and was followed by consecutive RBI singles by Eddie Rosario, Sano, and Kyle Knudson.

PAWTUCKET 8, ROCHESTER 2 IN ROCHESTER

Batting star:  Evan Bigley was 2-for-3.
Pitching stars:  Liam Hendriks struck out five in 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and a walk.  Michael O' Connor struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.  Tim Wood pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Jackie Bradley was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Jose Iglesias was 3-for-4 and scored twice.  Ryan Lavarnway was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.
Key inning:  The ninth.  In a 2-2 tie, the Red Sox scored six times.  A single, a stolen base, and an intentional walk put two runners on with one out.  Drew Sutton doubled to give Pawtucket the lead.  Another intentional walk loaded the bases and Ryan Lavarnway singled in two to make it 5-2.  Anthony Slama, who had started the inning, was relieved at this point.  Daniel Turpen came on to give up a two-run triple to Bryce Brentz.  Brentz came in to score on a ground out.

Batting stars:  Miguel Sano was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Kyle Knudson was 2-for-4.
Pitching stars:  Cole Johnson pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and two walks.  Adrian Salcedo struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Ronny Gil was 2-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice.  Stephen Piscotty was 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.  Nicholas Longmire was 2-for-5 with a double and scored twice.
Key inning:  The seventh.  Palm Beach trailed 4-3, but scored four times.  An error, a walk, and a single loaded the bases with one out.  Longmire singled to tie the score and a wild pitch gave the Cardinals the lead.  An intentional walk re-loaded the bases, an unintentional walk made it 6-4, and Danny Stienstra singled to make it 7-4.  All the runs came off Chad Rogers, who was brought in to start the inning.

CEDAR RAPIDS 8, BURLINGTON 4 IN BURLINGTON

Key inning:  The sixth.  Trailing 1-0, the Red Sox scored five times.  They loaded the bases on a walk and two singles off Gibson.  A walk, a single, a two-run double by Jose Iglacias, and a ground out made it 5-1.  The walk, single, and double came off Luis Perdomo.

Batting stars: Chris Colabello was 2-for-4 with a home run (his sixth) and two RBIs. Clete Thomas was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Joe Benson was 2-for-4 and scored once.
Pitching stars: Caleb Theilbar struck out three in three shutout innings of relief, giving up two hits and a walk. Tim Wood struck out two in a perfect inning. Anthony Slama pitched a perfect inning.
Opposition star: Brandon Snyder was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Key inning: The seventh. The score was tied at four. In the top of the inning, Rochester got back-to-back one-out singles but failed to score. In the bottom half, Colabello hit a one-out home run to give Rochester a lead they would hold.

PORTLAND 7, NEW BRITAIN 1 IN PORTLAND

Batting stars: Danny Santana was 2-for-4 with a triple and scored once. Jason Christian was 0-for-1 with two walks.

Pitching stars: Aaron Thompson pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.
Opposition stars: Travis Shaw was 2-for-5 with a double and scored twice. Will Latimer struck out three in 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit.
Key inning: The first. Santana tripled and scored to give the Rock Cats the early lead. Portland came back with two in the bottom of the first on a walk, a single, an error, and another single. The SeaDogs never trailed after that.

ST. LUCIE 6, FORT MYERS 5 IN ST. LUCIE

Batting star: Miguel Sano was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring three times.
Pitching stars: None.
Opposition stars: Domingo Tapia allowed two unearned runs on four hits and a walk in seven innings, striking out six. Matt Reynolds was 3-for-4 with an RBI. T. J. Rivera was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in three.
Key inning: The ninth. Trailing 6-2, the Miracle nearly lived up to their name. A single, three walks, and another single made it 6-4 with the bases loaded and none out. Adam Pettersen hit an infield single, scoring one, but Stephen Wickens was thrown out trying to score from second on the hit, ending the game.

CEDAR RAPIDS 11, PEORIA 2 IN PEORIA

Batting stars: Drew Leachman was 4-for-5, scoring twice and driving in two. Romy Jimenez was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in four. Niko Goodrum was 2-for-4 with two walks, scoring once and driving in two.
Pitching stars: Mason Melotakis pitched 3.1 innings, giving up one run on four hits and four walks. Steven Gruver pitched 4.2 innings of relief, giving up one run on four hits and no walks while striking out four. Tyler Jones gave up one hit in a scoreless inning.
Opposition stars: Jacob Wilson was 2-for-3 with a walk. Jordan Walton was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Key inning: The first. The Kernels popped out of the gate, scoring six runs. Twelve men batted. Two walks opened the game, followed by a single, a hit batsman, three more singles, another walk, and one more single. No one had more than one RBI. Byron Buxton walked twice in the inning.

Batting star:  Daniel Ortiz hit a home run, his third.
Pitching star:  Jose Gonzalez struck out four in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Matt Barnes struck out seven in six innings, allowing one run on five hits and a walk.  Michael Almanzar was 3-for-5 with a home run and scored twice.  Heiker Meneses was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.
Key inning:  The fifth.  Leading 4-1, the SeaDogs scored six time to put the game away.  They batted ten, getting four singles, a double, and two walks.  Christian Vazquez had a two-run double in the inning.  The runs came off reliever Marty Popham.

Opposition stars:  Kurt Heyer struck out eight in seven innings, allowing one run on four hits and no walks.  Alex Mejia was 2-for-2 with two walks, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jordan Walton was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in two.
Key inning:  The fifth.  Leading 2-1, the Chiefs put together a single, a walk, and two more singles to score twice.  Most of the damage was done off starter Hudson Boyd.

Batting stars:  Chris Herrmann was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Chris Colabello hit a home run, his fifth, and drove in three.
Pitching stars:  Virgil Vasquez pitched five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks.  Daniel Turpen struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits but no walks.
Opposition stars:  Melky Mesa was 3-for-4 with a home run.  Corban Joseph was 2-for-5 with a double and scored once.  Jim Miller struck out five in 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit.
Key inning;  The first.  After the RailRiders scored once in the top of the inning, the Red Wings came back with four in the bottom half.  The first four Rochester batters reached base:  Eric Farris singled, Herrmann doubled, Clete Thomas singled, and Colabello hit a home run.  The Red Wings never trailed after that.  S/W-B hit a couple of solo home runs late to make the score close, but solo homers don't hurt you.

NEW BRITAIN 17, PORTLAND 1 IN PORTLAND

Batting stars:  Almost everybody.  Antoan Richardson was 4-for-6 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in three.  Curt Smith was 3-for-5 with a double and a home run, scoring three times and driving in three.  James Beresford was 3-for-3 with three walks, scoring three times and driving in one.

Batting stars:  Brandon Boggs was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Jeff Clement was 2-for-4.
Pitching stars:  Anthony Slama pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Graham Stoneburner pitched six innings, allowing four hits and no walks.  David Adams was 3-for-4 with a walk and scored twice.  Melky Mesa was 2-for-5 with a double and scored once.
Key inning:  The sixth.  Leading 3-0, the RailRiders put together four singles, three with none out, to score twice and put the game away.  The damage was done off Liam Hendriks.

NEW HAMPSHIRE 3, NEW BRITAIN 2 IN NEW BRITAIN (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Josmil Pinto was 2-for-5 and scored once.  Curt Smith was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Pat Dean pitched seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits and no walks.  A. J. Achter struck out two in a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Tyson Brummett pitched five shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk.  Clint Robinson was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  John Tolisano was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Key inning:  The eleventh.  The Rock Cats had scored two in the ninth to tie the score at two.  Ryan Schimpf led off the eleventh with a single, took second on a balk, went to third on a ground out, and scored on a Robinson single.  The run was scored off Aaron Thompson.

PALM BEACH 5, FORT MYERS 3 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Michael Gonzales was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored once.  Matt Koch was 2-for-4 with a double.  Kyle Knudson was 2-for-4 and scored once.
Pitching stars:  Adrian Salcedo retired all four men he faced, three by strikeout.  Miguel Munoz gave up one hit in 1.2 scoreless innings.
Opposition stars:  Danny Stienstra was 3-for-4 with a double.  Nicholas Longmire was 2-for-5 with a double and a triple, driving in two.  Jonathan Cornelius struck out four in two perfect innings.
Key inning:  The ninth.  Trailing 5-2, the Miracle put together four consecutive one-out singles, scoring once and loading the bases.  Heath Wyatt then got Angel Morales to hit into a double play to end the game.
