Games of May 29

The Red Wings overcome a bad start by Stephen Gonsalves.  Lewis Thorpe and two relievers throw a shutout for the Lookouts.  A home run barrage supports Ervin Santana, who had a good rehab start for the Miracle.  Royce Lewis leads a Kernel comeback.

ROCHESTER 11, DURHAM 8 IN DURHAM

Durham led 5-1 after one, but the Red Wings took a 6-5 lead through four.  It was tied at seven after seven, but Rochester scored four in the eighth to take control. The runs scored on six singles and an error.

It was a bad game by Stephen Gonsalves, who pitched just two-thirds of an inning, giving up five runs on three hits and three walks and striking out one.  Gabriel Moya pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out two.  His ERA is 1.69.  Nick Anderson struck out four in three innings, giving up an unearned run on one walk.  His ERA is 1.16.

Games of May 27

A rough start for Trevor May.  Zack Granite is starting to get going.  Cody Stashak pitched well but got no help.  Randy Dobnak pitches the Kernels to a split.

BUFFALO 11, ROCHESTER 2 IN ROCHESTER (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

The Bisons scored two in the first, one in the second, and four in the third to take a 7-1 lead.
The Red Wings had just five hits, with no one getting more than one.  Willians Astudillo had the lone extra-base hit, a double.
Trevor May struck out five in 2.2 innings, but allowed seven runs on five hits and four walks.  In three games with Rochester he is 0-3, 9.28, 1.78 WHIP.  He threw seventy-seven pitches, so I guess he got his work in.

BUFFALO 3, ROCHESTER 1 IN ROCHESTER (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Rowdy Tellez had a two-run double in the first.  The Red Wings got one back in the second on a Jermaine Curtis double.  They had men on second and third with one out in the third but did not score.  They did not get the tying run into scoring position again.
Zack Granite was 2-for-4.  After a very slow start, he is batting .308 (12-for-39) in his last ten games, so maybe he's getting things going.  Wynston Sawyer was 1-for-3 and is batting .375.
Adalberto Mejia pitched five innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks and striking out four.  John Curtiss struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up a walk.  His ERA is 1.47.

MONTGOMERY 7, CHATTANOOGA 1 IN CHATTANOOGA

The Lookouts took a 1-0 lead in the second, but the Biscuits scored three in the fourth to go ahead and three in the ninth to put it out of reach.  Brandon Lowe hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Jake Cronenworth hit a two-run homer in the ninth.
Ryan Walker was 2-for-3.
Cody Stashak struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.  He is normally a reliever and so presumably was on a pitch count.  His ERA is 2.21.

FORT MYERS AT CHARLOTTE (GAMES 1 AND 2)

Rained out.

CLINTON 9, CEDAR RAPIDS 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 1--10 INNINGS--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

The Kernels led 3-1 through five, but the LumberKings loaded the bases with none out in the sixth and tied the score on a pair of sacrifice flies.  The Manfred Rule kicked in after seven, but neither team scored in the eighth and each team got one in the ninth.  Clinton scored five times in the tenth, with a triple by Joseph Rosa bringing home the lead run.  Cedar Rapids out-hit the LumberKings 9-7, but Kernel pitchers issued eleven walks.
Royce Lewis was 2-for-5 with two home runs (his second and third) and drove in three.  He is batting .303.  Ben Rortvedt was 2-for-4.  Jacob Pearson was 2-for-5 with a triple and is batting .389.  Alex Kirilloff was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk and is batting .319.  Jordan Gore was 1-for-4 and is batting .317.
Edwar Colina struck out five in five innings, giving up three runs on two hits and six walks.  His ERA is 2.87.  Jared Finkel pitched three shutout innings, giving up a hit and two walks.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, CLINTON 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 2--8 INNINGS--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

It was 1-0 Clinton through six, but a sacrifice fly tied it in the bottom of the seventh and brought the Manfred Rule into play.  Joseph Rosa had an RBI single in the top of the eighth.  In the bottom of the eighth a walk, a bunt, and a Jacob Pearson single tied the score.  Royce Lewis then delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home the winning run.
Ben Rodriguez was 2-for-2.  Pearson was 1-for-4 and is batting .364.  Alex Kirilloff was 0-for-3 and is batting .314.  Lewis was 1-for-3 and is batting .303.
Randy Dobnak struck out seven in seven innings, giving up one run on three hits and one walk.  He threw eighty-eight pitches.

Games of May 26

Dietrich Enns has a good game.  Brent Rooker carried the Lookouts offense and a triple play saved the game.  Fort Myers probably shouldn't have played.  Brusdar Graterol gets back under control, but the Kernels drop a doubleheader.

ROCHESTER 2, BUFFALO 0 IN ROCHESTER

Wynston Sawyer singled home a run in the fourth and Nick Gordon did the same in the fifth.  That was all Dietrich Enns and two relievers would need.
Sawyer was 2-for-3 and is batting .379.  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-3.  Gordon was 1-for-4 and is batting .316.
Enns pitched 5.2 scoreless innings, giving up three his and two walks while striking out five.  He has pretty much pitched well in every other game.  Alan Busenitz struck out four in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.  His ERA is 0.61.  Nick Anderson struck out two in a perfect inning.  His ERA is 1.33.

CHATTANOOGA 11, MONTGOMERY 10 IN CHATTANOOGA

The Lookouts had leads of 4-0, 5-2, 9-4, and 11-9.  They scored two runs in each of the first six innings except the third, when they scored one.  The Biscuits cut the margin to one in the eighth and had the bases loaded with none out, but hit into a 2-5-3 triple play.
Brent Rooker was 4-for-5 with a home run (his seventh) and a double, scoring three times and driving in three.  Zander Wiel was 3-for-3 with two doubles and is batting .331.  Tanner English was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, scoring four times.
Anthony Marzi pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on ten hits and no walks and striking out two.  Ryne Harper was credited with two perfect innings despite facing just four batters.  He struck out one and has an ERA of 1.93.

CHARLOTTE 2, FORT MYERS 0 IN CHARLOTTE (GAME 1--4 1/2 INNINGS--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

It was a game that probably should not have been played, as there were over three hours' worth of rain delays.  Surprisingly, neither starting pitcher came out of the game after those delays.  The Stone Crabs scored in each of the first two innings.
The Miracle had just three hits, all singles.  Mark Contreras was 1-for-2 with a walk.
Tyler Wells pitched a four-inning complete game, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk and striking out one.

FORT MYERS AT CHARLOTTE (GAME 2)

Rained out.

CLINTON 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Dimas Ojeda hit a two-run homer and the LumberKings led the rest of the way.  The lone Kernels run came in the third on an Alex Kirilloff single.
Cedar Rapids had five hits, all singles.  Kirilloff was 1-for-3 and is batting .325.  Jordan Gore is 0-for-3 and is batting .316.
Brusdar Graterol struck out nine in six innings, giving up three runs on five hits and no walks.  Whatever his control issue was last time out was not present here.  His ERA is 1.78.

CLINTON 9, CEDAR RAPIDS 6 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

With the scored tied 3-3, the LumberKings scored five runs in the fifth to take control of the game.  Clinton drew three walks in the inning and also benefited from a hit batsman and an error.
Jean Carlos Arias was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.  Jacob Pearson was 2-for-4.  Shane Carrier hit his fifth home run.
Jovani Moran struck out four in 2.1 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and no walks.  He is normally a reliever and presumably was on a pitch count.

Games of May 25

Kennys Vargas came to life, Chris Carter had a successful debut, and Nick Gordon is still hitting, but Aaron Slegers had his first bad game of the year as the Red Wings were swept.  Omar Bencomo led the Lookouts to a win.  Rain was the winner in Florida.  Bryan Sammons and a strong offense carried the Kernels.

BUFFALO 9, ROCHESTER 8 IN ROCHESTER (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

The Red Wings led 3-1 after one.  In the second, however, Ian Parmley hit a two-run triple and later scored on a ground out, and the Bisons led the rest of the way.  It was 9-5 going to the seventh, but Kennys Vargas hit his second three-run homer of the game and Rochester had the tying run on base when the game ended.

ROCHESTER 2, LEHIGH VALLEY 0 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

The Red Wings scored both of their runs in the sixth inning.  Kennys Vargas doubled home a run and scored on a Brock Stassi single.  Stephen Gonsalves and two relief pitchers took it from there.

KANE COUNTY 3, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN KANE COUNTY

Games of May 23

Miguel Sano looks ready, but Willians Asutdillo out-did him.  Ervin Santana does not look ready.  A Miracle comeback falls short.  Another big day for Jordan Gore.

ROCHESTER 3, LEHIGH VALLEY 2 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

The Red Wings trailed 2-0 through seven and did not get a hit through six.  Willians Astudillo led off the eighth with a home run.  In the ninth Miguel Sano and Astudillo each homered to give Rochester the lead.  I guess solo home runs can hurt you if you give up enough of them.  The IronPigs had the tying run on second with one out in the ninth but could not advance him.
Astudillo was 2-for-4 and the home runs were his fourth and fifth.  Sano was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second) and is batting .375.  Nick Buss was 2-for-4.
Zack Littell struck out seven in six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk.  His ERA is 2.05.  Nick Anderson struck out all three men he faced.  His ERA is 1.40 with 30 strikeouts in 19.1 innings.  John Curtiss pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk and striking out one.

MONTGOMERY 8, CHATTANOOGA 1 IN CHATTANOOGA

Already up 2-0, the Biscuits scored three in the fourth to take control of the game.  Edgar Corcino singled home the only Lookouts run in the fourth.
Chattanooga had just three hits.  James Ramsey was 1-for-1 with three walks and is batting .375.  Zander Weil was 0-for-4 and is batting .316.  Alex Perez was 0-for-4 and is batting .304.
Ervin Santana, on a rehab assignment, pitched just two innings, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks and striking out one.  He threw just forty-five pitches.  Lewis Thorpe pitched 5.2 innings, allowing five unearned runs on four hits and two walks and striking out five.  The Lookouts made three errors.  Having your hits and errors be the same number is usually not a good sign.

BRADENTON 7, FORT MYERS 6 IN FORT MYERS (10 INNINGS)

The Miracle scored two in the ninth to tie it 5-5 and bring the Manfred Rule into play.  The Marauders scored two in the top of the tenth.  Fort Myers got one back in the bottom of the tenth but did not get the tying run on base.
Caleb Hamilton was 2-for-3 with a double.  Brandon Lopez was 2-for-4 with a double.  Jaylin Davis was 2-for-4.  Jimmy Kerrigan was 2-for-5 and is batting .302.  Mark Contreras was 2-for-5.
Charlie Barnes pitched six innings, giving up three runs on six hits and no walks and striking out five.  Paco Rodriguez struck out two in 1.1 perfect innings.  His ERA is zero through 5.2 innings.

CEDAR RAPIDS 8, KANE COUNTY 7 IN KANE COUNTY

The Kernels led 2-0, fell behind 3-2, went up 4-2, and led 8-5 going to the bottom of the ninth.  The Cougars scored twice in the ninth and had the tying run on second when a strikeout ended the game.
Jordan Gore was 3-for-5 with two doubles and three runs.  He is batting .337.  Shane Carrier was 2-for-4 with a home run (his third) and four RBIs.  Jacob Pearson made his Class A debut and went 2-for-5.  Jose Miranda was 2-for-5.
Bailey Ober could not follow up his good outing last time.  He pitched five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and no walks and striking out two.  He did, however, pitch well after the first inning, when he gave up three of the runs.

Games of May 22

Miguel Sano goes deep for the Red Wings.  Trevor May pitches well in three of his four innings.  A very good game for Sean Poppen.  Jean Carlos Arias is heating up for the Kernels.

LEHIGH VALLEY 4, ROCHESTER 3 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

The IronPigs scored three in the second and one in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead.  The Red Wings came within one in the eighth but never got the tying run past first base.

Trevor May pitched well other than in the second inning.  He pitched four innings, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks and striking out two.  Adalberto Mejia struck out five in 3.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks.

CHATTANOOGA LOOKOUTS

No game scheduled.

FORT MYERS 3, BRADENTON 2 IN FORT MYERS
