Games of September 17

Max Kepler and Jason Wheeler lead the Lookouts to victory.  One run is not enough for the Kernels.  Each series was tied 1-1 at this point.

CHATTANOOGA 6, BILOXI 1 IN BILOXI--FINALS, GAME TWO

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with two home runs and a walk, driving in five.  Heiker Meneses was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Shannon Wilkerson was 2-for-4 with a run.
Pitching stars:  Jason Wheeler pitched seven innings, giving up one run on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Nick Burdi struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.  J. T. Chargois pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Nick Shaw was 2-for-3 with a run.  Michael Reed was 0-for-1 with three walks.  Jacob Barnes struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.
The game:  Kepler hit a solo homer in the first to give the Lookouts a 1-0 lead.  It stayed 1-0 until the fifth, when with two out and none on a single and two walks loaded the bases and Kepler hit a grand slam to put the Lookouts in control of the game.  The Shuckers loaded the bases with none out in the sixth but only scored one to make it 5-1.  The Lookouts got the run back in the seventh.
Of note:  Stephen Wickens was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Travis Harrison was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  D. J. Hicks was 0-for-4.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.

WEST MICHIGAN 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN WEST MICHIGAN--FINALS, GAME TWO

Batting stars:  Max Murphy was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.  Chris Paul was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.
Pitching starsSam Gibbons pitched six innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts.  Yorman Landa struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk.
Opposition stars:  A. J. Ladwig pitched seven innings, allowing one run on six hits and no walks with two strikeouts.  Christin Stewart was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Joey Pankake was 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
The game:  With two out in the second, Paul doubled and Murphy tripled to put the Kernels up 1-0.  For a while it looked like the run might hold up, but in the Whitecaps opened the seventh with a walk, a double, and Pankake's two-run single to take the lead.  Two errors led to two more runs and a 4-1 West Michigan lead through seven.  The Kernels did not threaten after that.
Of note:  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-4.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-3.  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-4.  T. J. White was 1-for-4.

Games of September 16

A rough game for D. J. Baxendale costs the Lookouts.  Felix Jorge throws six shutout innings in a Kernels win.

BILOXI 7, CHATTANOOGA 2 IN BILOXI--FINALS, GAME ONE

Batting stars:  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Stuart Turner was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching star:  Brett Lee pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits.
Opposition stars:  Jorge Lopez pitched seven innings, allowing one run on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts.  Yadiel Rivera was 2-for-5 with a triple and a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Orlando Arcia was 2-for-3 with a home run (his third) and a walk, driving in three.
The game:  Polanco singled home a run in the top of the third to put the Lookouts up 1-0, but it was all Shuckers after that.  Arcia hit a two-run homer in a three-run third that made it 3-1 Biloxi.  The Shuckers added single runs in the fourth and fifth and Rivera doubled home two in the sixth to pretty much seal the victory.  The Lookouts scored one more in the ninth but did not threaten to get back into the game.
Of note:  Stephen Wickens was 1-for-5.  Polanco was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Max Kepler was 0-for-4.  Travis Harrison was 0-for-3 with a walk.  D. J. Hicks was 0-for-4.  D. J. Baxendale pitched five innings, giving up five runs on six hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

CEDAR RAPIDS 5, WEST MICHIGAN 0 IN WEST MICHIGAN--FINALS, GAME ONE

Batting stars:  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in two.  Max Murphy was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-5 with a run.
Pitching stars:  Felix Jorge pitched six shutout innings, giving up four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Luke Bard struck out five in two perfect innings.  Randy LeBlanc struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Christin Stewart was 2-for-3 with a walk.  A. J. Simcox was 2-for-4.
The game:  It was scoreless until the fifth, when Austin Diemer singled in one run and Corcino doubled home two.  The Kernels added two in the eighth on a two-out two-run single by Murphy.  The Whitecaps mounted their biggest threat in the second, when they put men on first and second with none out.  A strikeout, a groundout, and a strikeout ended the threat, and West Michigan never had two men on base again.
Of note:  Rafael P. Valera was 2-for-5 with a run.  T. J. White was 1-for-4 with a run.  Chris Paul was 1-for-4.

Game of September 14

David Hurlbut leads the Lookouts to the series victory.

CHATTANOOGA 4, MONTGOMERY 1 IN MONTGOMERY--FIRST ROUND, GAME FOUR

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring twice.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-3 with a home run (his second) and a walk.  Heiker Meneses was 2-for-3 with a walk.
Pitching stars:  David Hurlbut pitched seven innings, giving up one run on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Nick Burdi pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.  J. T. Chargois pitched a scoreless inning, giving up only a walk.
Opposition stars:  Jake Bauers was 2-for-3 with a home run.  Jake DePew was 1-for-2 with a walk.
The game:  The Lookouts left the bases loaded in the top of the second and Bauers homered in the bottom of the second, putting Montgomery up 1-0.  In the third, an error and a Travis Harrison RBI single put the Lookouts in front 2-1.  Kepler doubled and scored in the fifth and Walker II homered in the eighth to increase the Lookouts lead.  The biggest Biscuits threat came in the eighth, when they had two on with none out.  Burdi came in to get a strikeout and a double play to end the inning.
Of note:  Stephen Wickens was 1-for-5 with a double and a run.  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-5.  Harrison was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  D. J. Hicks was 0-for-3 with an RBI.

Games of September 12

The Lookouts lose in extras despite the efforts of Jason Wheeler and Jorge Polanco.  Keaton Steele and Max Murphy lead the Kernels to a game one win.

MONTGOMERY 6, CHATTANOOGA 5 IN CHATTANOOGA (11 INNINGS)--FIRST ROUND, GAME TWO--MAKEUP FROM SEPTEMBER 11

Batting stars:  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and two runs.  D. J. Hicks was 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.  Travis Harrison was 1-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching star:  Jason Wheeler pitched six innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
Opposition stars:  Dayron Verona was 3-for-6 with a run and an RBI.  Juniel Querecuto was 1-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs.  Matt Lollis struck out three in two shutout innings, allowing two walks.
The game:  Hicks hit a two-run single in a three-run first that put the Lookouts up 3-0.  It looked for a while like that might be enough, as the Lookouts led 3-1 after six.  Querecuto hit a two-run single in the seventh, however, and we went to extra innings.  Daniel Robertson hit a two-run triple in the top of the tenth to put the Biscuits up 5-3, but Polanco hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the tenth to tie it 5-5.  In the eleventh, however, two walks, a bunt, and Verona's RBI single put the Biscuits ahead 6-5, and this time Chattanooga could not come back.
Of note:  Shannon Wilkerson was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Max Kepler was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-5 with a double.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, PEORIA 2 IN PEORIA--SEMI-FINALS, GAME ONE

Batting stars:  Max Murphy was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Brian Navaretto was 1-for-4 with a double.
Pitching star:  Keaton Steele struck out nine in eight innings, giving up one run on two hits and no walks.
Opposition stars:  Kenny Peoples-Walls was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run.  Darren Seferina was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Steven Sabatino retired all four men he faced, striking out two.
The game:  Each team scored once in the first.  It stayed 1-1 until the seventh, when Murphy hit a two-run homer to put the Kernels up 3-1.  In the ninth, Peoples-Walls hit a leadoff triple and Seferina followed with an RBI single, but Nick Anderson struck out the next three batters to end the game.
Of note:  Rafael P. Valera was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-4.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-4 with a double.  T. J. White was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Chris Paul was 0-for-3 with a run.

Max Kepler comes through with a walkoff single for the Lookouts.  Chris Paul's two-run single gives the Kernels a sweep in extra-innings.

CHATTANOOGA 4, MONTGOMERY 3 IN CHATTANOOGA--FIRST ROUND, GAME ONE

Batting stars:  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Max Kepler was 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.  Heiker Meneses was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale pitched 7.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits with no walks and four strikeouts.  Nick Burdi struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk.
Opposition stars:  Jaime Schultz pitched five innings, allowing one run on three hits and five walks with four strikeouts.  Patrick Leonard was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Jake Bauers was 1-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.
The game:  The Biscuits scored two in the second to go ahead 2-0.  They still led 3-1 through six.  An error cut the lead to 3-2 after seven but it stayed there until the ninth.  The first two batters of the bottom of the ninth struck out, but Shannon Wilkerson and Polanco walked, a wild pitch sent them to second and third, and Kepler singled to right to score both of them and give the Lookouts the victory.
Of note:  Wilkerson was 0-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Travis Harrison was 0-for-3 with a walk.  D. J. Hicks was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, QUAD CITIES 1 IN QUAD CITIES (11 INNINGS)--FIRST ROUND, GAME 2

Batting stars:  Chris Paul was 3-for-4 with a walk and three RBIs.  T. J. White was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run.
Pitching stars:  Sam Gibbons pitched eight innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  Yorman Landa struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Nick Anderson pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Brock Dykxhoorn struck out six in 6.2 innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits and two walks.  Eric Peterson retired all four men he faced, striking out two.  Jason Martin was 1-for-4 with a triple and a run.
The game:  Each team scored a run in the fourth.  It stayed 1-1 until the eleventh, when a walk and an error put men on second and third and Paul delivered a two-run single.  The River Bandits got only one hit in the last six innings.
Of note:  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-5.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-5.  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-5 with a run.

We start recaps of the playoffs.  Nick Gordon and Felix Jorge lead the Kernels to a game one win.

CEDAR RAPIDS 5, QUAD CITIES 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS--FIRST ROUND, GAME 1

Batting stars:  Nick Gordon was 3-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Alex Real was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.
Pitching stars:  Felix Jorge struck out seven in 7.1 innings, giving up two runs on nine hits and one walk.  Nick Anderson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Nick Tanielu was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Kristian Trompiz was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Brian Muniz was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.
The game:  Gordon's sacrifice fly in the fourth put the Kernels up 3-2.  They added a run in the sixth on a wild pitch and one more in the seventh on an error.

ROCHESTER (6-2)
Batter:  Danny Ortiz was 10-for-30 with three home runs, a double, and a walk.  For the season he hit .248/.295/.430 in 484 at-bats.
Pitcher:  Taylor Rogers made two starts, pitching thirteen innings.  He gave up two runs on thirteen hits and one walk with eleven strikeouts.  For the season he was 11-12, 3.98, 1.34 WHIP with 126 strikeouts in 174 innings (27 starts, 1 relief appearance).
CHATTANOOGA (3-4)
Batter:  Shannon Wilkerson was 10-for-27 with a triple, a double, three walks, and two stolen bases.  For the season he hit .292/.355/.378 and was 11-for-12 in stolen bases in 185 at-bats.

Where They Stand: End of Regular Season

Rochester was 77-67, second in the International League North, four games behind Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. They were tied for second in the wild card race, six games behind Indianapolis.

Chattanooga was 76-61. In the first half they were 43-25, finishing first in the Southern League North, 4.5 games behind Tennessee. In the second half they were 33-36, fourth in the Southern League North, 9.5 games behind Montgomery. They qualified for the playoffs by winning the first half.

Fort Myers was 76-63. In the first half they were 38-32, second in the Florida State League South, seven games behind Charlotte. In the second half they were 38-31, third in the Florida State League South, 5.5 games behind Palm Beach.

Cedar Rapids was 77-63. In the first half they were 41-29, second in the Midwest League Western, five games behind Quad Cities. In the second half they were 36-34, fourth in the Midwest League Western, twelve games bhind Kane County. They qualified for the playoffs by finishing second in the first half.

Elizabethton was 34-34, third in the Appalachian League West, six games behind Kingsport.

The GCL Twins were 27-32, third in the Gulf Coast League South, 14.5 games behind the GCL Red Sox.

The DSL Twins were 36-36, fourth in the Dominican Summer League Boca Chica South, seventeen games behind the DSL Giants.

Games of September 7

Jose Martinez and Taylor Rogers carry the Red Wings. Adam Brett Walker II hits his thirty-first! Rafael P. Valera and Sean Miller have big days. And we've finally finished the regular season!

ROCHESTER 8, LEHIGH VALLEY 1 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

Batting stars: Jose Martinez was 4-for-5 with two home runs (his fifth and sixth) and two doubles, scoring four times and driving in four. Xavier Avery was 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Argenis Diaz was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in one.

Pitching stars: Taylor Rogers pitched six innings, giving up one run on seven hits and no walks with four strikeouts. Alex Meyer struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one walk. Aaron Thompson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars: Tommy Joseph was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run. Russ Canzler was 2-for-4 with a double. Tyler Pastornicky was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The game: Martinez hit a two-run homer in the second to give the Red Wings a 2-0 lead. They scored single runs in the fourth, sixth, and eighth to make the score 5-1. Martinez hit another two-run homer in a three-run ninth.

Of note: Eric Farris was 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. James Beresford was 0-for-5. Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-5. Danny Ortiz was 1-for-5 with a double. Josmil Pinto was 1-for-5 with a double and a run.

JACKSON 6, CHATTANOOGA 4 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars: D. J. Hicks was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-4 with a home run, his thirty-first. Heiker Meneses was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching stars: J. T. Chargois struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit. Alex Wimmers pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars: Ian Miller was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one. Edwin Diaz struck out three in three innings, allowing one run on one hit. Zach Shank was 1-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.

The game: Leon Landry's two-run single-plus-error highlighted a four-run third that put the Generals up 4-1. The Lookouts cut it to 4-2 in the fourth but never got closer than two runs. It was 6-2 after seven, but the Lookouts scored single runs in the eighth and ninth. They had the tying run on base with one out in the ninth, but a double play ended the game.

Of note: Shannon Wilkerson was 1-for-5. Niko Goodrum was 0-for-5. Max Kepler was 1-for-4 with a run. Travis Harrison was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run. Aaron Slegers pitched six innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

CLINTON 6, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars: Rafael P. Valera was 3-for-5 with two doubles. Sean Miller was 3-for-5 with a run. Chris Paul was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching stars: Zach Tillery retired all five men he faced, striking out two. John Curtiss pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars: Wayne Taylor was 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, and a walk, scoring once and driving in two. Burt Reynolds was 2-for-5 with a home run, his fifth. Pat Leyland was 2-for-5 with a home run.

The game: The Kernels scored single runs in the first and second and the LumberKings scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, leaving the score tied 2-2. It stayed 2-2 until the eighth, when Reynolds led off with a home run. Taylre later had a two-run double in what turned out to be a four-run inning that left Clinton in control of the game.

Of note: Edgar Corcino was 1-for-5. T. J. White was 0-for-3 with a walk. Sam Clay struck out five in 4.1 innings, but he gave up two runs on four hits and five walks.

Games of September 6

Doug Bernier and Josmil Pinto lead the Red Wings. Shannon Wilkerson carries the Lookouts to a comeback extra-inning win. Ryan Walker and Zach Granite have good days in a Miracle loss. Nick Gordon and Randy LeBlanc come through for the Kernels.

ROCHESTER 5, LEHIGH VALLEY 1 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

Batting stars: Doug Bernier was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Josmil Pinto was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run. Danny Ortiz was 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching stars: Michael Bowden struck out five in 5.1 innings, giving up one run on seven hits and two walks. Loek van Mil pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a walk. Aaron Thompson retired all four men he faced with one strikeout.

The game: The Red Wings scored three in the second and two in the third to take control early. Each rally was aided by an error. The lone IronPigs run came in the third inning.

Batting stars: Shannon Wilkerson was 4-for-6 with a triple and a double, scoring twice and driving in one. Jorge Polanco was 2-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one. Travis Harrison was 1-for-3 with three walks, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars: Brandon Peterson struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up two walks. D. J. Johnson struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars: Marcus Littlewood was 3-for-4 with a home run (his seventh) and a walk, scoring twice and driving in three. Tyler Smith was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two. Leon Landry was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.

The game: The Generals led by scored of 8-1 and 10-5, but the Lookouts scored once in the seventh and four times in the eighth to tie it 10-10. In the tenth, a hit batsman, a Wilkerson double, and an intentional walk loaded the bases and an error brought home the winning run.

Of note: Max Kepler was 1-for-4 with two walks, scoring once and driving in one. Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Brett Lee pitched 5.1 innings, giving up seven runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk with one strikeout.

Batting stars: Ryan Walker was 2-for-2 with a double and a run. Zach Granite was 2-for-3 with a double. Engelb Vielma was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching stars: Luke Westphal struck out five in 4.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) despite nine hits and a walk. Tyler Jay pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk with one strikeout. Alex Muren pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars: Justin Williams was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one. Mike Marjama was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two. Maxx Tissenbaum was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

The game: Logan Wade singled in a run in the first, but that was it for the Miracle. The run held up for a while, but Marjama doubled in two in the fifth, Williams singled one home in the sixth, and the Stone Crabs added two in the eighth.

Of note: Mitch Garver was 0-for-2. Wade was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, CLINTON 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars: Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one. Austin Diemer was 2-for-3 with a run. T. J. White was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Pitching stars: Randy LeBlanc pitched six innings, giving up a run on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Luke Bard struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and two walks. Nick Anderson pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars: Zack Littell pitched five shutout innings, allowing two hits and no walks with one strikeout. Kodi Kerski struck out four in 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits.

The game: The LumberKings led 1-0 after five, but the Kernels scored three times in the sixth. Gordon tripled in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run. The LumberKings did not get a hit after the fourth inning.

ROCHESTER 13, LEHIGH VALLEY 1 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

Batting stars: Eric Farris was 3-for-6 with a double, scoring three times and driving in three. Danny Ortiz was 3-for-5 with a grand slam, his seventeenth homer. Doug Bernier was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching stars: Jose Berrios struck out five in five innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk. Alex Meyer struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk. Loek van Mil pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars: Jordan Danks was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Russ Canzler was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

The game: It was 2-1 after four, but Rochester scored six in the fifth to take control of the game. They batted eleven, getting a double, four singles, and three walks. Ortiz hit a grand slam in a five-run eighth that put the game out of reach.

The game: Landry doubled and scored in the fourth to put the Generals up 2-1. Jordy Lara's two-run double in the eighth made it 4-1. A single and four walks brought the Lookouts to 4-3 in the ninth, but a line out ended the game.

Pitching stars: Yorman Landa struck out three in two shutout innings. Jared Wilson pitched a shutout inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars: Brock Hebert was 2-for-4 with two runs. Burt Reynolds was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Osmer Morales retired all four men he faced, striking out one.

The game: The Kernels scored two in the bottom of the third to break a 3-3 tie. The go-ahead run scored on a balk and Paul doubled in the other run. Real hit a two-run double in a three-run sixth that put the game out of reach.

Pat Dean shines for the Red Wings. D. J. Hicks and David Hurlbut lead the Lookouts. An excellent game for Stephen Gonsalves. Sam Gibbons pitches well for Cedar Rapids. Yes, we're way behind, but we're going to finish them anyway, just because.

ROCHESTER 2, PAWTUCKET 1 IN PAWTUCKET

Batting stars: Allan de San Miguel, who's back in the Twins' organization, was 2-for-3 with a double. Oswaldo Arcia was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching star: Pat Dean pitched a complete game, giving up one run on five hits and no walks with one strikeout.

Opposition stars: Shawn Haviland pitched 7.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and no walks with five strikeouts. Humberto Quintero was 1-for-3 with a double and a run. Mike Miller was 1-for-3 with a double.

The game: Arcia broke a scoreless tie with a one-out RBI double in the fifth. James Beresford singled in a run in the eighth to make it 2-0. The Red Sox scored one in the eighth and had a man on first with one out, but their last five batters were retired.

Of note: Beresford was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Doug Bernier was 1-for-4. Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4. Danny Ortiz was 0-for-4.

The game: Hicks' two-run single in the third broke a 2-2 tie and put the Lookouts ahead 4-2. They then scored three in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

The game: Walker doubled home a run in the first, Vavra singled in two in the second, and Haar had an RBI single in the fourth to put the Miracle ahead 4-0. Each team scored once in the fifth, but the Stone Crabs never threatened to get back into the game.

Pitching stars: Sam Gibbons pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Zach Tillery pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk. Nick Anderson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars: Angel Ventura struck out eight in six innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks. Sthervin Matos was 1-for-2 with two walks, scoring twice. Tucker Neuhaus was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

The game: Three singles and an error put the Kernels up 3-0 in the fourth. The Timber Rattlers cut it to 3-2 after six and scored two in the seventh to take the lead. In the eighth, however, a walk, a double, and Wade's RBI single put the Kernels back in front 5-4. The Timber Rattlers got a man to third in both the eighth and the ninth but could not score.

Games of September 3

A late rally falls short for the Red Wings.  Not much hitting for the Lookouts.  Zach Granite and Chad Christensen lead the Miracle.  Nick Gordon gets a couple of hits for the Kernels.

PAWTUCKET 5, ROCHESTER 4 IN PAWTUCKET

Batting stars:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with a home run (his sixteenth) and a walk, scoring twice.  James Beresford was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Carlos Paulino was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.
Pitching stars:  Logan Darnell pitched 4.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on eight hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Aaron Thompson pitched a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Jonathan Roof was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.  Deven Marrero was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Humberto Quintero was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
The game:  Three singles and an error enabled the Red Sox to tie the score 2-2 in the fifth.  Roof hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Quintero singled in a run in the seventh to put the Red Sox in front 5-2.  Doug Bernier and Beresford each had an RBI single in the ninth to cut the lead to 5-4.  The Red Wings had men on first and second with one out, but a pair of fly outs ended the game.
Of note:  Jose Martinez was 1-for-5.  Danny Ortiz was 2-for-4.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-3 with a walk.

JACKSON 5, CHATTANOOGA 2 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, driving in one.  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Stephen Wickens was 1-for-3 with a run.
Pitching stars:  D. J. Johnson retired all four batters he faced, striking out three of them.  Brandon Peterson struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.
Opposition stars:  Stephen Landazuri pitched six innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Jordy Lara was 2-for-5 with a home run (his seventh) and two runs.  Ian Miller was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.
The game:  Lara homered in the second to put the Generals up 1-0 and Aderlin Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 3-0.  Kepler tripled in a run in the seventh and a run scored on a ground out in the eighth to cut the lead to 3-2, but the tying run was stranded on third base.  Miller doubled in two runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

Opposition stars:  Hector Guevera was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Braxton Lee was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Justin Williams was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
The game:  Guevera's two-run single capped a four-run inning that put the Stone Crabs ahead 2-0 in the second.  The Miracle came back with a four-run inning of their own in the third, which included a three-run triple by Haar.  An error allowed the Stone Crabs to take a 5-4 lead in the fifth, but the Miracle scored three in the sixth to go in front to stay and added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on Granite's two-run single to take control of the game.
Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Aderlin Mejia was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-5 with a run.  Logan Wade was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Mat Batts pitched six innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

WISCONSIN 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 0 IN WISCONSIN

Batting stars:  Nick Gordon was 2-for-3 with a double.  Brett Doe was 2-for-4.  Chris Paul was 1-for-3 with a double.
Pitching stars:  Luke Bard pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts.  Nick Anderson pitched a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Zach Cooper struck out five in three shutout innings, allowing one hit.  Josh Uhen pitched six shutout innings, allowing four hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Luis Aviles was 2-for-3 with a triple and a double, scoring twice.
The game:  The Timber Rattlers scored three in the third and one in the fifth.  The Kernels' biggest threat came in the sixth, when they loaded the bases with one out.  A strikeout and a popup ended the threat.
Of note:   Sean Miller was 0-for-5.  Rafael P. Valera was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Max Murphy was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Michael Theofanopoulos, normally a reliever, pitched well for two innings before running into trouble in the third.  His line was three innings, three runs, three hits, two walks, three strikeouts.
