Games of July 9


NEW BRITAIN 7, NEW HAMPSHIRE 1 IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Batting stars:  Aaron Hicks was 3-for-4 with a walk and a home run, his ninth, scoring three times.  Chris Colabello was 3-for-4 with a walk and a double.  Chris Herrmann was 3-for-5.
Pitching star:  Logan Darnell struck out seven in eight innings, giving up one run on five hits and one walk.
Opposition stars:  Brian Van Kirk hit a home run.  Stephen Marek struck out two in two shutout innings.
Key inning:  The second.  The Rock Cats led 2-0, but had two out and none on.  Hicks, Herrmann, Colabello, and Evan Bigley all singled to score two more and give New Britain a solid lead.
Other:  The first four batters in the Rock Cats lineup combined to go 11-for-18 with two walks, a double, and a home run.

JUPITER 10, FORT MYERS 4 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Levi Michael was 2-for-5 with a double.  Kyle Knudson was 2-for-3 with a walk.
Pitching stars:  Matt Capps started and struck out one in a perfect inning.  Miguel Munoz struck out two in two shutout innings, allowing one hit.
Opposition stars:  Aaron Dudley was 4-for-5 with a double and a home run, driving in four.  Danny Black was 2-for-5 with a double.
Key inning:  The third.  Trailing 1-0, the Hammerheads scored seven times.  A walk, an error, a fielder’s choice, three singles, a double by Dudley, and another single plated the runs.

BURLINGTON 3, BELOIT 0 IN BELOIT

Batting star:  Matthew Koch hit a triple.
Pitching stars:  In his first start of the season, Ryan O’Rourke struck out five in four innings, giving up a run on two hits and a walk. 
Opposition stars:  John Nestor was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run.  Eliezer Mesa was 2-for-5.  Drew Granier worked 7.2 innings, striking out eleven while allowing two hits and two walks.
Key inning:  The third.  With one out, Nestor doubled in Michael Fabiaschi with the only run the Bees would need.
Other:  The Snappers had only two hits.

ELIZABETHTON 12, JOHNSON CITY 0 IN JOHNSON CITY

Batting stars:  Travis Harrison was 5-for-6 with a home run, his third, and scored three times.  Jorge Polanco was 3-for-5 with a walk and a double.  Bo Altobelli was 3-for-6.
Pitching stars:  Hudson Boyd gave up two hits and no walks in six innings, striking out five.  Joshua Burris allowed three hits in two innings.
Opposition stars:  Ronard Castillo and Gerwuins Velazco were each 2-for-4.  Joseph Donofrio threw two shutout innings.
Key inning:  The first.  The Twins jumped out to a seven run lead.  Adam Walker hit a two-run double, Harrison hit a two-run homer, and Candido Pimentel delivered a two-run double.
Other:  There were eight errors in the game, five by Johnson City.

GCL TWINS 5, RAYS 2 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Jorge Fernandez was 2-for-4 with a double.  John Murphy and Bryan Haar were each 2-for-4.
Pitching star:  Melciades De La Cruz struck out five in two perfect innings.
Opposition star:  Bralin Jackson was 2-for-4 with a walk, a double and a triple.  Joshua Harrison struck out for while giving up one run on five hits in three innings.
Key inning:  The fourth.  The score was tied at two.  With two out and none on Fernandez doubled.  Kelvin Ortiz reached second on an error, scoring Fernandez.  A wild pitch and another error scored Ortiz to give the Twins a 4-2 lead.
Other:  The Rays made five errors.

DSL CUBS1 5, TWINS 2 AT CUBS1

Batting star:  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-5.
Pitching star:  Fernando Romero struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits.
Opposition stars:  Jose Paniagua was 3-for-4 with a double.  Miguel Rico was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Andin Diaz struck out three in three shutout innings.
Key inning:  The eighth.  Leading 3-2, the Cubs1 scored twice to put the game out of reach.  A pair of walks and a Wilfredo Petit triple scored the runs.
