Games of July 1


ROCHESTER 5, SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 3 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Pedro Florimon was 2-for-4 with a double.  Danny Valencia and J. R. Towles were each 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Luis Perdomo threw three perfect innings, striking out five.  Caleb Thielbar gave up only a walk in two shutout innings, striking out two.
Opposition star:  Ronnier Mustelier hit a two-run homer.  Chase Whitley struck out four in three innings, allowing one run on three hits.
Key inning:  The second.  Leading 2-1, the Yankees scored once to go ahead by two.  The Red Wings responded by stringing together five singles to produce three runs and take a lead they would never relinquish.
Other:  The Red Wings were 15-14 in June.  It was their first winning month since August of 2009.

NEW BRITAIN 6, BOWIE 2 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Aaron Hicks was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring three times.  Daniel Rohlfing was 2-for-4 with a double.  Oswaldo Arcia was 2-for-4 and drove in two.
Pitching stars:  Dakota Watts and Bruce Pugh each threw two shutout innings, each giving up a hit and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Robbie Widlansky was 3-for-4.
Key inning:  The second.  The score was tied at two.  A Nathan Hanson single and a ground rule double by Rohlfing put runners on second and third with none out.  A run-scoring ground out was followed by RBI singles by Hicks and Arcia to put the Rock Cats up 5-2.
Other:  The game was delayed for one hour and one minute by rain in the sixth inning.

FORT MYERS 4, ST. LUCIE 2 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Josmil Pinto was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Daniel Santana was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Daniel Ortiz was 2-for-4 with a double.
Pitching stars:  Madison Boer allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks in six innings.  A. J. Achter worked two perfect innings.
Opposition star:  John Church threw two shutout innings, striking out two.
Key inning:  The fifth.  The score was tied at two.  With one out, Santana tripled and scored on a single by Anderson Hidalgo.  With two out, Pinto delivered an RBI double.

BELOIT 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN BELOIT

Batting star:  Miguel Sano was 2-for-3 with a home run (his eighteenth) and a walk, scoring three times.
Pitching stars:  Tyler Jones worked 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and striking out three.  Corey Williams pitched a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Alex Yarbrough was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Michael Johnson struck out six in four innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on a hit and three walks.
Key inning:  The eighth.  With the score tied at three, Sano led off the inning with a home run that turned out to be the game-winner.
Other:  The Snappers were out-hit eight to three.

PRINCETON 6, ELIZABETHTON 4 IN PRINCETON

Batting stars:  Romy Jimenez was 3-for-4 with a double.  Jhonatan Arias was 3-for-4.  Stephen Wickens was 2-for-4 with a double.
Pitching star:  D. J. Baxendale struck out four in 1.2 perfect innings.
Opposition stars:  Oscar Hernandez was 2-for-4 with two doubles.  Brandon Martin was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Grandon Goetzman was 2-for-4 with a double.
Key inning:  The sixth.  Trailing 4-3, the Twins used two singles and an error to tie the score.  In the bottom of the inning, Darryl George and Hernandez hit back-to-back doubles to put the Rays back in front.
