Games of July 2


PAWTUCKET 2, ROCHESTER 1 IN PAWTUCKET

Batting star:  Brian Dinkelman was 2-for-4 with a double.
Pitching stars:  Samuel Deduno gave up a pair of unearned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five in seven innings.  Casey Fien struck out the side in his only inning.
Opposition stars:  Lars Anderson was 2-for-4.  Zach Stewart allowed a run on five hits with no walks in six innings.  Alex Wilson struck out two in two shutout innings.
Key inning:  The seventh.  With the score tied at one, the Red Wings basically handed the Red Sox the go-ahead run.  Deduno hit Jose Iglesias with a pitch and allowed him to go to third after an error on a pickoff throw.  He then scored on a sacrifice fly to put Pawtucket ahead.
Other:  Rochester did not get a hit after the sixth inning.

BOWIE 11, NEW BRITAIN 2 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Chris Colabello was 2-for-4 with a double.  Evan Bigley was 2-for-4.
Pitching star:  David Bromberg worked 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and two walks while striking out two.
Opposition stars:  Rhyne Hughes was 2-for-5 with a double, driving in four.  Manny Machado was 2-for-4 with a walk, driving in three.  Pat Egan threw two shutout innings.
Key inning:  The fifth.  Leading 2-1, the Baysox scored six times.  They had three singles, two doubles, and a walk before a two-run homer by Buck Britton finally killed the rally.  Nine men came up in the inning for Bowie.

ST. LUCIE 5, FORT MYERS 2 IN FORT MYERS

Batting star:  Levi Michael tripled, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching star:  Nelvin Fuentes went two shutout innings, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Alonzo Harris was 4-for-5 with a double.  Cory Vaughn was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Tyler Pill struck out seven in six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk.
Key inning:  The fifth.  Trailing 2-1, the Mets scored three times.  Vaughn hit an RBI triple and Blake Forsythe hit an RBI double.

BELOIT 6, CEDAR RAPIDS 5 IN BELOIT

Batting stars:  Jonathan Goncalves was 3-for-4 with a double and a triple.  Steven Liddle was 2-for-4 with a double.
Pitching stars:  Ryan O’Rourke struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Alex Yarbrough was 2-for-5 with a triple.  Kevin Moesquit was 2-for-4 with a double.  Zach Wright was 2-for-4.
Key inning:  The fifth.  The Snappers trailed 5-1.  Goncalves led off with a triple and scored on a ground out.  Matthew Koch singled and Tyler Grimesdoubled.  A sacrifice fly brought in one run and an Adam Pettersen single got Beloit back into the game at 5-4.
Other:  The Snappers scored the go-ahead run in the eighth on consecutive two-out doubles by Goncalves and Liddle…All five Kernels runs came in the fourth inning, and all were unearned as Beloit made four errors in the inning, five for the game.

ELIZABETHTON 13, PRINCETON 1 IN PRINCETON

Batting stars:  Romy Jimenez was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run (his fifth), and a walk, scoring three times and driving in three.  Max Keplerwas 3-for-5 with a triple.  D. J. Hicks was 2-for-4 with a double, a grand slam, and a walk, driving in five for the game.
Pitching stars:  Joshua Burris worked 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up no hits, striking out three, and walking two.  Steven Evans struck out four in two shutout innings, allowing one hit.
Opposition stars:  None.
Key inning:  The fifth.  It was a scoreless tie.  Rory Rhodes led off the inning with a double, but the next two batters went out.  Adam Walker andMichael Quesada each singled to make the score 1-0.  Jimenez hit a three-run homer to make it 4-0.  The rally continued as Jorge Polanco singled,Niko Goodrum walked, and Kepler delivered an RBI single.  The Twins batted ten in the inning.

GCL RAYS 1, TWINS 0 AT RAYS (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  None.
Pitching star:  Starter Kuo Hua Lo threw five perfect innings, striking out five.
Opposition stars:  Oscar Armenta gave up three hits and walked one in six innings.  Lucas Goodgion and Nicholas Sawyer each worked two innings.
Key inning:  The tenth.  In a scoreless tie, the Twins gave it away.  Melciades De La Cruz hit leadoff batter Jonathan Quinones with a pitch.  He went to second on a bunt, took third on an error, and scored on a wild pitch.
Other:  The Rays had only one hit in the game, a leadoff single in the seventh.

DSL DIAMONDBACKS 4, TWINS 3 AT DIAMONDBACKS

Batting star:  Jonatan Ynojoso was 2-for-4 with a double.
Pitching star:  Reudis Reyes pitched four shutout innings, allowing two hits.
Opposition stars:  Yeisson Rosario was 2-for-3.  Jency Solis struck out three in 2.1 perfect innings.
Key inning:  The sixth.  Trailing 4-1, the Twins went double, single, double with one out to make the score 4-3 and put the tying run on second with one out.  The next two batters went out and the Twins did not get a hit the rest of the game.
