Games of July 17


ROCHESTER 6, NORFOLK 2 IN NORFOLK

Batting stars:  Clete Thomas was 2-for-4 with a triple and a walk.  Evan Bigley was 2-for-4 with a double.  Rene Rivera was 2-for-3 with a home run, his sixth.
Pitching stars:  Jeff Manship struck out seven in six innings, giving up two runs on eight hits.  Luis Perdomo threw three shutout innings, allowing three hits and no walks.
Opposition stars:  Lew Ford was 3-for-4 with a home run, his tenth.  Jamie Hoffman was 2-for-4 with a double.  Carlos R. Rojas was 2-for-4.
Key inning:  The second.  The Red Wings led 1-0.  Bigley singled, took second on a ground out, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on another ground out to make it 2-0.  J. R. Towles then reached on an error and scored on a Thomas triple to put Rochester up by three.
Other:  Norfolk starter Matt Bischoff was promoted to replace scheduled starter Brad Bergesen, who was promoted to Baltimore.  Bergesen had been named the starter to replace scheduled starter Zach Britton, who had early been promoted to Baltimore.

NEW HAMPSHIRE 6, NEW BRITAIN 5 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Joe Benson was 2-for-4.  Chris Colabello was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.
Pitching stars:  None.
Opposition stars:  Sean Ochinko was 3-for-4 with a three-run homer.  John Talisano was 2-for-4 with a double.  Jake Marisnick was 2-for-5 with a double.
Key inning:  The ninth.  The Rock Cats had just scored three in the eighth to tie the score at five.  With one out, Talisano doubled and Marisnick delivered an RBI single to put the Fisher Cats ahead.  The Rock Cats came up with two singles in the ninth, but could not tie the game again.

FORT MYERS 2, DUNEDIN 1 IN FORT MYERS (GAME 1—SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Daniel Santana and Josmil Pinto were each 2-for-3.
Pitching stars:  Cole Nelson went five innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and two walks.  A. J. Achter struck out four in two hitless innings, walking one.
Opposition stars:  Jonathan Jones was 2-for-3.  Asher Wojciechowski pitched five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five.
Key inning:  The first.  Santana led off the inning with a single and took third on a Levi Michael double.  Santana scored on a ground out and Michael scored on a Pinto single, giving the Miracle all the runs it would need.

DUNEDIN 6, FORT MYERS 0 IN FORT MYERS (GAME 2—SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Daniel Santana and Levi Michael were each 2-for-4.
Pitching stars:  Miguel Munoz struck out five in 2.1 scoreless innings, walking two and giving up two hits.  Nelvin Fuentes allowed only a walk in two shutout innings, striking out two.
Opposition stars:  Koby Clemens was 2-for-3 with a home run.  Ryan Schimpf was 2-for-4 with a home run.  Casey Lawrence gave up seven hits but no walks in six innings, fanning five.
Key inning:  The third.  Leading 1-0, the Blue Jays scored five times.  They started the inning with three consecutive doubles.  After an out, a homer and another double followed.  A two-out single ended the scoring.
Other:  Fort Myers went 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position.  That would seem like it has to be fairly close to the record for an oh-fer with runners in scoring position.

ELIZABETHTON 7, JOHNSON CITY 4 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Kelvin Mention was 2-for-4 with a grand slam, his first.  Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.  Romy Jimenez was 2-for-3 with a walk.
Pitching stars:  Christian Powell struck out four in two shutout innings, allowing a hit and walking two.  D. J. Baxendale fanned three in one inning, giving up a hit and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Jeremy Schaffer was 4-for-4 with two doubles and a walk.  Carson Kelly was 2-for-5 with a home run.  C. J. McElroy was 2-for-3 with two walks.
Key inning:  The fourth.  The Twins trailed 3-0.  The Twins opened the inning with four singles to make the score 3-1 and load the bases.  Mention then smacked a grand slam to put them ahead 5-3.  Candido Pimentel doubled, and with two out Kepler homered to make the score 7-3.
Other:  Twins pitchers recorded fourteen strikeouts in the game.

GCL TWINS V. ORIOLES

A doubleheader was rained out.

DSL TWINS 9, ROCKIES 7 AT ROCKIES (1O INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Adonis Pacheco was 4-for-5 with a double, scoring three times.  Gabriel A. Ynfante was 4-for-6.  Ernesto Ciprian was 3-for-5 with a walk and a home run, his second.
Pitching star:  Francisco Romero threw two shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk.
Opposition stars:  Henry Garcia was 2-for-5 with a home run.  Wilkyns Jimenez was 2-for-3.  Javier Palacios worked 2.1 scoreless innings.
Key inning:  The tenth.  The score was tied at seven.  A single and a fielder’s choice put runners on first and third with one out.  The go-ahead run scored on a wild pitch and an insurance run came home on an Engelb Vielma single.
