Games of July 11


FORT MYERS 6, CLEARWATER 5 IN CLEARWATER

Batting star:  Daniel Santana was 2-for-4 with a double.  Anderson Hidalgo was 1-for-2 with two walks and a three-run homer, his second.
Pitching star:  Tom Stuifbergen gave up just one hit in four innings, striking out three and walking none.
Opposition stars:  Carlos Alonso was 2-for-4 with a double.  Zach Collier was 2-for-4.
Key inning:  The eighth.  Leading 5-1, the Miracle scored when Michael Gonzales doubled and scored on a Santana double.  They needed the run, as the Threshers came up with four in the bottom of the inning.  They had two out and none on when they got a hit batsman, doubles by Alonso and Peter Lavin, and a two-run homer by Jim Murphy to cut the lead to 6-5.  Miracle pitchers retired the next four batters to close out the game.
Other:  Matt Capps pitched one inning, allowing an unearned run on one hit.  Joe Benson was 1-for-5 with a double.

FORT WAYNE 6, BELOIT 3 IN FORT WAYNE

Batting star:  Miguel Sano was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk, driving in two.
Pitching star:  Cole Johnson worked 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit.
Opposition stars:  Austin Hedges was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.  Tyler Stubblefield was 2-for-3.  Yeison Asencio was 2-for-4 with a double.
Key inning:  The fourth.  Leading 3-2, the TinCaps scored twice.  A walk, a double, and a single drove in the runs.

GREENEVILLE 7, ELIZABETHTON 4 IN GREENEVILLE

Batting stars:  Jhonatan Arias was 3-for-4.  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Niko Goodrum was 2-for-4 with a walk.
Pitching star:  Brett Lee threw two shutout innings, giving up three hits.
Opposition stars:  Brian Blasik was 2-for-3 with a triple, driving in four.  Angel Ibanez was 2-for-4.  Adrian Houser struck out eight in six innings, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks.
Key inning:  The third.  Max Kepler’s RBI single tied the score at one.  The Astros came back with five in the bottom of the inning.  The key hit was a bases-loaded triple by Blasik.

GCL TWINS 6, ORIOLES 1 AT TWINS (GAME 1—SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Rene Tosoni was 2-for-4 with two doubles.
Pitching stars:  Josue Montanez struck out five in five innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits and no walks.  Jose Berrios struck out three in two perfect innings.
Opposition stars:  None.
Key inning:  The third.  The Twins led 1-0.  With runners on first and second with two out, Bryan Haar singled in one and John Murphy singled in two, putting the Twins up 4-0.

GCL TWINS 5, ORIOLES 2 AT TWINS (GAME 2—SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  John Murphy was 2-for-4 with a double.  Joel Licon was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Pitching stars:  Felix Jorge struck out four in four shutout innings, giving up two hits and walking none.  Alexander Muren threw two perfect innings.
Opposition star:  Janser Severino allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out six in five innings.
Key inning:  The seventh.  The Twins led 2-0 and had two out with none on.  Will Hurt walked, stole second, and scored on Murphy’s double.  Aderlin Mejia delivered an RBI single, stole second, and scored on a single by Licon, making the score 5-0.  The runs were important, as the Orioles scored twice on three singles in the bottom of the inning.

DSL TWINS 6, WHITE SOX 1 AT WHITE SOX

Batting stars:  Ernesto Ciprian was 3-for-4 with a triple.  Victor Arias was 3-for-4.  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.
Pitching stars:  Junior Subero struck out six in five shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks.  Jose Jimenez worked two shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Ifran Becerra was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Vladimir Santana was 2-for-4.  Wilce Nieves threw three shutout innings.
Key inning:  The first.  The Twins loaded the bases with one out.  Joel Polanco singled in a run and Ciprian drove in another with a sacrifice fly for the Twins to take a 2-0 lead.  The White Sox opened the bottom of the first with a pair of singles, but had a runner thrown out at the plate and never seriously threatened the lead again.
Other:  The White Sox got nine hits, but received only one walk and did not get the benefit of any Twins errors.
