Games of August 8


SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 7, ROCHESTER 3 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Chris Parmelee was 2-for-4 with a double.  Matt Carson hit a home run, his twelfth.  Clete Thomas hit a home run, his eleventh.
Pitching star:  Shairon Martis worked seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks.
Opposition stars:  Chris Dickerson was 3-for-5 with a home run.  Melky Mesa was 2-for-4 with a double and a homer.  Michael O’Connor struck out seven in 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and no walks.
Key inning:  The ninth.  The Yankees overcame a 3-2 Red Wings lead by putting up a five spot.  Doubles by Austin Romine, Kosuke Fukudome, and Mesa tied the score.  An intentional walk loaded the bases, still with none out.  Ramiro Pena hit a two-run single to give S/WB the lead.  With two out, Eduardo Nunez singled in two more.
Other:  Kent Hrbek was in Rochester signing autographs before the game.

BINGHAMTON 8, NEW BRITAIN 3 IN BINGHAMTON

Batting stars:  Chris Colabello was 2-for-4 with a home run, his eighteenth.  Oswaldo Arcia was 1-for-2 with a walk, a double, and a sacrifice fly.
Pitching star:  Edgar Ibarra struck out two in a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Jefry Marte was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer.  Darin Gorski gave up two runs on four hits and a walk in six innings.
Key inning:  The second.  The Mets broke up a 1-1 tie with five runs.  They opened the inning with a walk and two singles to take the lead.  A two-out single made the score 3-1 and Marte’s three-run homer put the game out of reach early.

FORT MYERS 7, JUPITER 2 IN FORT MYERS (7 INNINGS—RAIN)

Batting stars:  Daniel Santana was 2-for-4 with two doubles.  Lance Ray was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk.  Daniel Rams was 2-for-4.
Pitching star:  Pat Dean pitched six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks.
Opposition stars:  Taylor Krick was 2-for-3 with a double.  Mark Canha was 2-for-4 with a double.  Raudel Lazo struck out three in two perfect innings.
Key inning:  The fourth.  The Miracle had led 5-0, but the Hammerheads scored two in the top of the inning.  Fort Myers squashed any thoughts of a Jupiter comeback with two in the bottom of the inning.  Santana doubled, Ray tripled, and Rams singled to produce the runs.

BELOIT 4, QUAD CITIES 1 IN QUAD CITIES

Batting stars:  Jairo Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double.  Drew Leachman was 2-for-3 with a walk.
Pitching star:  Matt Tomshaw gives up only an unearned run in seven strong innings, allowing six hits and no walks.
Opposition star:  Nick Martini was 2-for-3 with a double.
Key inning:  The sixth.  The Snappers led 2-1, but had not scored since the second.  Two singles and a hit batsman loaded the bases with one out and Wang-wei Lin hit a sacrifice fly to give Beloit an insurance run.
Other:  Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air will make an appearance at tonight’s Beloit-Quad Cities game.  The actor’s name is not given; he’s just identified as “Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”

ELIZABETHTON 5, JOHNSON CITY 2 IN JOHNSON CITY

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 4-for-4 with a double and a home run, his eighth.  Adam Walker was 2-for-4 with two home runs, giving him eleven.  Byron Buxton was 2-for-4.
Pitching stars:  Starter Brett Lee struck out seven in four innings, giving up one run on three hits.  Tyler Duffey struck out two in two shutout innings.
Opposition stars:  Ildemaro Vargas was 3-for-4 with two doubles.  Gerwuins Velazco was 2-for-3.  Joseph Donofrio struck out four in two shutout innings.
Key inning:  The ninth.  The Twins led 3-2, but had not scored since the first.  Walker led off the inning with a home run.  Later in the inning, Candido Pimentel singled home another run.

GCL ORIOLES 7, TWINS 6 AT TWINS (10 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Jorge Fernandez was 4-for-5 with three RBIs.  Joel Licon was 1-for-3 with a triple and two walks.
Pitching stars:  Starter Felix Jorge allowed only an unearned run in four innings, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out four.  Alexander Muren walked one in two shutout innings.  Anthony Slama worked a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Hector Veloz was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a triple, and a walk.  Jalen Simmons was 2-for-4 with a double.  Manuel Hernandez was 2-for-5 with a double.
Key inning:  The tenth.  In a 5-5 tie, the Orioles led off with a Hernandez double and a Veloz triple to take the lead.  Later, a squeeze bunt gave the Orioles a two-run lead.  In the bottom of the inning, three singles gave the Twins one run and a walk loaded the bases with two out.  A fly out then ended the game.
