Games of August 3

ROCHESTER 3, TOLEDO 1 IN TOLEDO

Batting stars:  Chris Parmelee and Rene Rivera were each 3-for-4 with a double.  Matt Carson was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Shairon Martis struck out eight in seven innings, giving up a run on three hits and two walks.  Bobby Lanigan struck out two in two perfect innings.

Opposition star:  Adam Wilk allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out eight in seven innings.

Key inning:  The ninth.  Leading 2-1, the Red Wings used singles by Brian Dinkelman, Rivera, and Eduardo Escobar to score an insurance run.

NEW BRITAIN 5, ALTOONA 4 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Nathan Hanson was 2-for-4 with a home run, his fourth.  Chris Colabello was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer, his seventeenth.  Aaron Hicks was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.

Pitching star:  Aaron Thompson gave up only one run on five hits and three walks in six innings.

Opposition stars:  Ramon Cabrera was 2-for-4 with two doubles.  Adalberto Santos and Oscar Tejeda were each 2-for-4 with a double.

Key inning:  The ninth.  Leading 3-2, Santos doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give the Curve an insurance run.  It wasn’t enough.  Hicks and Chris Herrmann drew one-out walks in the bottom of the ninth.  A strikeout brought the Rock Cats down to their last out, but Colabello hit a three-run walkoff homer to win the game for New Britain.

ST. LUCIE 6, FORT MYERS 0 IN ST. LUCIE

Batting star:  Anderson Hidalgo was 1-for-4 with a double, the only Miracle extra-base hit.

Pitching stars:  Clint Dempster allowed one run on three hits and two walks in 3.2 innings, striking out three.  A. J. Achter struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Aderlin Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with two home runs.  Rafael Fernandez was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run.  Tyler Pill struck out ten in 7.2 innings, giving up three hits and a walk.

Key inning:  The third.  The Mets led 2-0.  Cory Vaughn led off the inning with a home run, and with one out Fernandez and Rodriguez hit back-to-back homers to put St. Lucie up 5-0.

BELOIT 8, KANE COUNTY 1 IN BELOIT

Batting stars:  Stephen Wickens was 3-for-5 with two doubles.  Eddie Rosario was 3-for-5.  Nate Roberts was 2-for-4 with a walk.

Pitching star:  Matt Tomshaw allowed only one run on three hits and a walk in seven innings.

Opposition stars:  Jack Lopez was 2-for-4 with two doubles.  Jorge Bonifacio was 2-for-4 with a double.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The Snappers led 3-1.  They then used two walks, four singles, and a double to score five times and put the game out of reach.  Rosario and Drew Leachman each had an RBI single, Wickens drove in two with a double, and Jairo Rodriguez capped the rally with an RBI single.

BURLINGTON AT ELIZABETHTON

Rained out.

GCL RED SOX 5, TWINS 4 AT RED SOX

Batting stars:  Jose Ramirez was 2-for-5.  Byron Buxton was 1-for-2 with a walk and was hit by pitches twice.

Pitching star:  Kyle Gibson allowed one hit in 1.1 scoreless innings.

Opposition stars:  Jeremias Pineda was 3-for-6.  Sully Bonnelly worked 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit while striking out four and walking four.

Key inning:  The ninth.  Trailing 4-2, the Red Sox tallied three times to win the game.  Three walks loaded the bases, an error scored one, a hit batsman tied the game, and a single by Pineda brought the winning run home.

Other:  Andrew Bailey started for the Red Sox on a rehab assignment.  He pitched one inning, striking out two while allowing a hit and a walk.

DSL DIAMONDBACKS 3, TWINS 1 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Francis Mateo was 2-for-3 with a double.  Rafael P. Valera was 2-for-4.

Pitching star:  Jose Ramirez struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up only a walk.

Opposition stars:  Maximo Sosa was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run.  Ifran Becerra was 2-for-5.  Christian Cespedes struck out three in two shutout innings.

Key inning:  The fourth.  In a 1-1 tie, consecutive two-out doubles by Freddy Ramirez and Sosa put the Diamondbacks ahead.  In the bottom of the inning the Twins put runners on second and third with two out, but could not score and did not come that close again.
