Australian League: Games of January 17

A key double for Logan Wade.  Another big day for ex-Twin Allan de San Miguel.  Walks make the difference for Adelaide.

MELBOURNE 4, BRISBANE 2 IN MELBOURNE (13 INNINGS)

Twins:  Logan Wade (Brisbane) was 1-for-5 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in one.

Brisbane:  Joey Rickard (Tampa Bay) was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Steven Greer was 3-for-6.  Andrew Aizenstadt pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

Melbourne:  Ryan Casteel (Colorado) was 2-for-5 with a double and a home run (his tenth), scoring twice and driving in two.  Brad Harman was 2-for-6 with a two-run homer, his sixth.  Brett Zawacki struck out nine in five shutout innings of relief, allowing two hits and one walk.

The game:  Casteel doubled in a run in the first to give Melbourne a 1-0 lead.  In the third, RBI doubles by Wade and Rickard gave Brisbane a 2-1 advantage.  The lead held until the seventh, when Casteel homered to tie it up.  It stayed tied until the thirteenth, when Harman hit a two-run homer with one out to end the game.

ADELAIDE 5, SYDNEY 2 IN ADELAIDE

Sydney:  Boss Moanaroa was 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.  Daniel Arribas (Pittsburgh) was 1-for-3 with a home run.  Jeff Lyons pitched 2.1 perfect innings, striking out one.

Adelaide:  Byron Wiley was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer.  Ben Lodge was 2-for-4 with a run.  James Campbell (Dodgers) pitched five innings, allowing one run on two hits and six walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  It was scoreless until the fourth, when Moanaroa singled in a run to give Sydney a 1-0 led.  In the sixth, Adelaide scored all five of their runs.  Wiley hit a two-run homer to put Adelaide ahead, a walk, a single, and a walk loaded the bases, two more walks brought in two runs, and a passed ball brought in the fifth run of the inning.  Sydney put men on first and third with one out in the eighth, but a fly ball double play ended the inning.  Sydney got a solo homer in the ninth but did not threaten to get back into the game.

PERTH 6, CANBERRA 0 IN PERTH

Perth:  Allan de San Miguel was 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run homer, his third.  George Barber was 1-for-2 with a walk and a home run (his third), scoring twice.  Brian Baker pitched six innings, giving up one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.

Canberra:  The team had only two hits, both singles.

The game:  Perth got on the board in the third on Barber's leadoff homer.  There was no more scoring until the seventh, when de San Miguel hit a two-run homer and Tim Kennelly (Philadelphia) had an RBI single.  Perth added two in the ninth to cement the victory.  Canberra's only scoring threat came in the fourth, when a single and a walk put men on first and second with none out.   A double play and a fly out ended the inning.
