Games of June 18

The seventh inning does the Red Wings in twice.  Something's up with Alex Meyer.  Fort Myers takes the first half championship!

PAWTUCKET 9, ROCHESTER 4 IN ROCHESTER (COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

Batting stars:  Eric Farris was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Dan Rohlfing was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Doug Bernier was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Starter Sean Gilmartin, in his AAA debut, pitched 3.1 innings before the game was suspended, giving up two unearned runs on six hits and no walks with two strikeouts.  Edgar Ibarra struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Carlos Rivero was 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs.  Alex Hassan was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Mike McCoy was 4-for-4 with a walk and a run.

The game:  An error preceded Rivero's two-run homer in the third to give Pawtucket a 2-1 lead.  In the fourth, Chris Herrmann trripled, Bernier single him home, and back-to-back doubles by Rohlfing and Farris gave Rochester a 4-2 advantage.  Hassan's RBI double cut the lead to 4-3 and Pawtucket took control of the game with a six-run seventh.  Rivero hit another two-run homer to give the Red Sox the lead, and an error, a double, two walks, and a three-run double by Mookie Betts put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Deibinson Romero was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk.  Chris Colabello was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-5 with a double.  Herrmann was 1-forr-4 with a trriple annd a rrunn.

PAWTUCKET 4, ROCHESTER 1 IN ROCHESTER (SCHEDULED GAME--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Dan Rohlfing was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.  Wilkin Ramirez was 2-for-3 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Alex Meyer struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks.  Ryan Pressly pitched three shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Mookie Betts was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Chris Hernandez pitched five innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Deibinson Romero singled in a run in the third to give Rochester a 1-0 lead.  It was still 1-0 through six.  In the seventh, however, Pawtucket scored all four of its runs.  Three singles tied the score, a walk loaded the bases, an error plated two runs, and a sacrifice fly finished the scoring.  The Red Wings got the tying run up to bat with none out in the bottom of the seventh but got no closer.

Of note:  Eric Farris was 0-for-3.  Romero was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.

Extra:  Something's up with Alex Meyer, but I don't know what.  In his prior start, he was pulled after two innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks.  I was told there was no injury, it was the manager's decision.  Seemed like a quick hook, but I wasn't there, I didn't see the game, so whatever.  But now he was pulled after three shutout innings.  It was 78 pitches, but still, he only walked two, and he should be able to throw more pitches than that.  If I find out anything, I'll let you know.

NEW BRITAIN 5, HARRISBURG 4 IN HARRISBURG

Batting stars:  Tony Thomas was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Mike Kvasnicka was 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs.  Kennys Vargas was 3-for-5 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Matthew Summers struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a walk.  Lester Oliveros struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Michael A. Taylor was 2-for-5 with a home run, his seventeenth.  Kevin Keyes was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Matt Skole was 1-for-4 with a home run, his seventh.

The game:  Taylor and Skole each homered in the third to give Harrisburg a 3-1 lead.  Brad Boyer singled in a run in the sixth to cut the lead to 3-2, but Jeff Kobernus singled in a run in the seventh to make it 4-2.  Two singles with two productive outs scored one in the eighth to cut the lead to 4-3.  In the ninth, a single, a hit batsman, and a walk resulted in bases loaded with two out and Kvasnicka delivered a two-run single to give New Britain the lead.  The Senators went down in order in the ninth.

Of note:  Corey Wimberly was 0-for-3.  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-5.  Nate Hanson was 1-for-5 with a run.  Starter Virgil Vasquez pitched 6.2 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks with no strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 5, BRADENTON 0 IN BRADENTON

Batting stars:  Stuart Turner was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run (his fourth), scoring twice.  Stephen Wickens was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Lance Ray was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale pitched six innings, giving up four hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  Matt Tomshaw pitched three innings, giving up four hits with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Adam Frazier was 2-for-4 with a double.  Josh Bell was 2-for-4.

The game:  Turner hit a home run in the fifth to break a scoreless tie.  In the sixth, Fort Myers got three to take control of the game.  Jorge Polanco singled, Wickens and Ray hit back-to-back RBI doubles, and a wild pitch plated the third run.  Turner doubled and scored in the seventh.  The only time Bradenton had more than one man on base was the eighth, when a double and a single put men on first and third with one out.  A double play ended the inning.

Of note:  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.  Dalton Hicks was 0-for-4.

DSL TWINS 8, DSL REDS 6 AT REDS

Batting stars:  Antonio Tovar was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple, scoring once and driving in two.  Jermaine Polacios was 1-for-3 with two walks, scoring three times and driving in one.  Jorge Parra was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching star:  Luis Hernandez pitched five innings, giving up one run on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Leandro Santana was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Erick Gabo was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Adolfi Telleria struck out seven in five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk.

The game:  The Twins scored on ground outs in the first and second to take a 2-0 lead.  It was 2-1 after five, two singles and three walks scored two in the sixth and three walks, a single, and a sacrifice fly scored two more in the seventh.  The Reds scored single runs in each of those innings, leaving the score 6-3.  A walk, RBI doubles by Santana and Carlos Rivero, and a pair of wild pitches tied the score in the eighth.  In the ninth, Tovar tripled in a run and later came around to score to give the Twins an 8-6 lead.  The Reds had one man reach on an error to bring the tying run to bat with two out in the ninth, but a strikeout ended the game.

Of note:  Jorge Andrade was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.  Eugenio Diaz was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Francisco Hernandez was 1-for-4.
