Games of June 30


The Red Wings are blanked in consecutive games.  Byron Buxton leads Fort Myers to victory.  The Kernels win their tenth straight.

SYRACUSE 2, ROCHESTER 0 IN SYRACUSE

Batting stars:  Drew Butera was 2-for-4 with a double.  Doug Bernier was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Pitching stars:  Liam Hendriks took a complete game loss, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four.
Opposition stars:  Caleb Clay pitched six innings, allowing three hits and three walks.  Zach Walters was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.  Chris Rahl was 2-for-4 and scored once.
Key inning:  The third.  In a scoreless tie, Brian Jeroloman led off with a double, was bunted to third, and scored on a single by Will Rhymes to give the Chiefs the lead.
Prospect watch:  Chris Colabello was 0-for-2 with two walks.  Aaron Hicks was 1-for-4.

READING 8, NEW BRITAIN 2 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Daniel Ortiz was 2-for-4 with a double.  Josmil Pinto was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored once.
Pitching stars:  Dakota Watts struck out two in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and one walk.  Edgar Ibarra pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Brody Colvin pitched eight innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks.  Maikel Franco was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.  Jim Murphy was 2-for-2 with a double and three walks, scoring once and driving in one.
Key inning:  The second.  Leading 1-0, the Fightin Phils scored four times.  A walk, a single, and a hit batsman loaded the bases.  An error scored one, a Franco single brought home two, and Tommy Mendonca singled to make the score 5-0.
Prospect watch:  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-4 with a double and scored once.  Miguel Sano was 0-for-3 with a walk.

FORT MYERS 4, ST. LUCIE 1 IN FORT MYERS (6 INNINGS--RAIN)

Batting stars:  Byron Buxton was 3-for-3 with a double and scored three times.  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Pitching stars:  Jason Wheeler gave up one run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 5.1 innings.  Ryan O'Rourke struck out both men he faced.
Opposition star:  T. J. Rivera was 2-for-3 with a double and scored once.
Key inning:  The third.  The Miracle led 1-0.  In the top of the inning, the Mets tied the score on back-to-back doubles by Rivera and Matt Den Dekker.  In the bottom half, Buxton singled, took second on a bunt, and scored on a two-out single by Vargas to put Fort Myers back in the lead.
Prospect watch:  Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-1 with two sacrifice bunts.

CEDAR RAPIDS 6, PEORIA 5 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4 with a walk and scored twice.  Travis Harrison was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.
Pitching stars:  Alex Muren struck out three in two innings, giving up an unearned run on one hit and no walks.  Tyler Jones struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Nick Martini was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Jeremy Schaffer was 2-for-4 with a double and scored twice.
Key inning:  The ninth.  The Kernels trailed 5-4.  A hit batsman and two walks loaded the bases with one out.  Harrison walked to force in the tying run and Max Kepler singled in the winning run.
Prospect watch:  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Kepler was 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

ELIZABETHTON 5, KINGSPORT 1 IN KINGSPORT

Batting stars:  Dereck Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with two doubles and scored once.  Romy Jimenez was 2-for-4 with a home run, his first.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-3 with a home run, his first.
Pitching stars:  Randy Rosario struck out seven in five innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks.  Brandon Peterson struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Austin Malinowski pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.
Opposition star:  Alberto Baldonado pitched three shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk.
Key inning:  The fourth.  The Twins led 3-0.  Rodriguez doubled, went to third on a single by Javier Pimentel, and scored on a ground out.  Pimentel took second on that ground out, went to third on another ground out, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.  The Mets got one in the bottom of the fourth, but that was it.
Prospect watch:  Rory Rhodes was 0-for-2.  Kelvin Ortiz was 1-for-5.

DSL GIANTS 2, DSL TWINS 1 AT GIANTS

Batting stars:  None.
Pitching stars:  Starter Alex Tapia pitched four perfect innings.  Wilfredy Loranzo pitched a scoreless inning, giving up no hits and on walk.
Opposition stars:  Olbis Parra pitched six innings, allowing one run on three hits and a walk.  Carlos Cartagena was 1-for-2 with a walk and a two-run homer.
Key inning:  The seventh.  The Giants led 1-0.  Gustavo Cabrera led off with a single and Cartagena hit a one-out two-run homer to put the Giants ahead.
Prospect watch:  Joel Ramirez was 0-for-3.  Dubal Baez was 1-for-3 and scored once.
