Games of July 7

Oswaldo Arcia goes deep again.  Kennys Vargas gets a couple of hits.  Another good game for Aaron Slegers.  No sweep for Cedar Rapids.  Solo homers aren't enough for the E-Twins.  A big day for Travis Blankenhorn in the GCL.  The DSL Twins' comeback falls short.

BUFFALO 15, ROCHESTER 1 IN ROCHESTER

Batting star:  Oswaldo Arcia was 1-for-3 with a home run, his sixth.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Sean Ochinko was 4-for-6 with a home run (his second) and two doubles, scoring three times and driving in three.  Melky Mesa was 3-for-6 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in three.  Daniel Norris struck out eight in seven innings, allowing one run on four hits and no walks.

The game:  Ochinko homered in the first and Matt Hague homered in the third, leading to a 3-0 Bisons lead.  They blew the game open in the fifth, scoring five times, including a two-run sacrifice fly-plus-error.  The lone Red Wings run came in the fifth on Arcia's home run.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4.  Jose Martinez was 1-for-3.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-3.  Danny Ortiz was 0-for-3.  Greg Peavey struck out four in 4.1 innings, giving up six runs (four earned) on nine hits and no walks.

CHATTANOOGA 5, JACKSONVILLE 0 IN JACKSONVILLE (COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

Batting stars:  Aderlin Mejia was 2-for-4 with a home run.  Levi Michael was 1-for-5 with a two-run homer, his third.  Jairo Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Jason Wheeler pitched four shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk with three strikeouts.  Alex Muren pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.  Brandon Peterson pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Viosergy Rosa was 1-for-2 with a walk.  Zack Cox was 1-for-3 with a double.  Sean Donatello pitched two shutout innings, allowing one hit.

The game:  The Lookouts had scored one in the first, fourth, and fifth to take a 3-0 lead when the game was suspended.  Michael hit a two-run homer in the seventh to put it out of reach.  The Suns twice, in the sixth and seventh, put a man on second with none out but did not advance him.

Of note:  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Max Kepler was 0-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.

JACKSONVILLE 5, CHATTANOOGA 4 IN JACKSONVILLE (SCHEDULED GAME--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Max Kepler was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Jake Reed pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk with one strikeout.  Zach Jones struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Viosergy Rosa was 3-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  David Adams was 1-for-3 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Zack Cox was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

The game:  Cox' single-plus-error in the second brought home two and a three-run third made it 5-0 Suns.  The Lookouts opened the fourth with three singles, leading to a three-run inning of their own to cut the lead to 5-3.  They added a run in the fifth when Heiker Meneses scored from first on a Vargas single.  However, the Lookouts did not get another hit after that.

Of note:  Levi Michael was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Tim Shibuya pitched 2.1 innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits and no walks with no strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 4, JUPITER 3 IN JUPITER

Batting stars:  Zach Granite was 2-for-4 with a run.  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-5 with a run.  Marcus Knecht was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Pitching stars:  Aaron Slegers pitched seven innings, giving up one run on six hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Corey Williams pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Avery Romero was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Justin Bohn was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Drew Steckenrider struck out six in five shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk.

The game:  The Hammerheads took a 1-0 lead in the fourth.  Two singles, a walk, and an error produced two Miracle runs in the sixth and Garver delivered a two-run single-plus-error in the seventh to give the Miracle a 4-1 advantage.  A single, a walk, and two more singles made the score 4-3 with two out in the ninth, but a fly out ended the game.

Of note:  Alex Swim was 1-for-5 with a run.  Garver was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  The catcher for the Hammerheads was Chris Hoo.  He really needs to become a first baseman.

BELOIT 8, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Tanner English was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Brett Doe was 2-for-4.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Yairo Munoz was 1-for-3 with two walks, scoring twice and driving in one.  Max Kuhn was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Brett Graves pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one run on six hits and a walk with one strikeout.

The game:  Jose Brizuela had a two-run single in a three-run Snappers first.  English doubled in a run in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-1, but the Snappers came back with two in the sixth on two singles, two walks, and a sacrifice fly.  The Kernels had a man thrown out trying to score from second on a single in the sixth and did not threaten after that.

Of note:  Zack Larson was 0-for-4.  Luke Westphal struck out seven in four innings, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk.

PRINCETON 4, ELIZABETHTON 2 IN PRINCETON

Batting stars:  Tyler Kuresa was 2-for-4 with a home run (his third) and a double.  Rainis Silva was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Manuel Guzman was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching star:  Kuo Hua Lo retired all eight men he faced, striking out two of them.

Opposition stars:  Kewby Meyer was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Jose Rojas was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.  Blake Bivens struck out five in five innings, allowing one run on five hits and no walks.

The game:  Kuresa homered leading off the second to give the Twins a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth, though, Jamie Mitchell had an RBI single and Meyer a two-run single to put the Rays up 3-1.  The Rays added a run in the fifth.  The Twins got a home run from Silva in the ninth but did not get the tying run up to bat.

Of note:  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4.  Amaurys Minier was 0-for-4.  Austin Diemer was 1-for-4 with a double.  Alexis Tapia struck out seven in 5.1 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks.

GCL TWINS 4, GCL ORIOLES 3 AT TWINS (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Travis Blankenhorn was 4-for-5 with a triple and a run.  Luis Arraez was 2-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-5 with a triple and a walk, driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Eduardo Del Rosario struck out five in five shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk.  Miguel Gonzalez pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Yorman Landa struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two walks.

Opposition stars:  Branden Becker was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Jason Heinrich was 1-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Ryan Mountcastle was 2-for-5 with a run.

The game:  It was scoreless until the fifth, when RBI singles by Arraez and Jorge Andrade put the Twins up 2-0.  The Orioles came back with three in the sixth, getting RBI singles by Heinrich and Becker as well as a sacrifice fly.  The Twins tied it in the eighth when Palacios hit an RBI triple.  The Twins loaded the bases with one out in the tenth but could not score.  In the eleventh, Arraez walked, stole second, went to third on a ground out, and scored on a Trey Cabbage single.

Of note:  Cabbage was 3-for-6 with an RBI.  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-3.  Brian Olson was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run.

DSL DODGERS 5, DSL TWINS 4 AT DODGERS

Batting stars:  Antonio Tovar was 2-for-3 with two walks and a run.  Jorge Parra was 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.  Jean Carlos Arias was 0-for-3 with two walks and two runs.

Pitching star:  Carlos Suniaga struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Jefrey Souffront was 1-for-1 with four walks, scoring twice.  Cristian Santana was 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Luis Paz was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

The game:  Each team scored twice in the first.  It was still 2-2 through four.  The Twins got a sacrifice fly in the fifth to go up 3-2, but the Dodgers came back with three in the bottom of the fifth, getting an RBI single from Romar Cuadrado and a two-run single from Paz.  The Twins scored once in the seventh and had the bases loaded with one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning and they did not threaten again.

Of note:  Emmanuel Morel was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Francisco Hernandez was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Juan Herrera struck out seven in four innings, giving up two runs on two hits and four walks.
