Games of July 13

An excellent game by David Hurlbut.  The Miracle loses in the ninth.  Nick Gordon continues to improve.  Lewin Diaz and Luis Arraez carry the GCL Twins.  A big comeback for the DSL Twins.

CHATTANOOGA 4, MISSISSIPPI 3 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Stephen Wickens was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Heiker Meneses was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Niko Goodrum was 1-for-4 with a triple and a run.
Pitching star:  David Hurlbut pitched seven shutout innings, giving up five hits and two walks with no strikeouts.
Opposition stars:  Emerson Landoni was 5-for-5 with a double and a run.  Eric Garcia was 0-for-1 with three walks and a run.  Stephen Janas pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
The game:  A double play brought home a run for the Lookouts in the second inning.  It stayed 1-0 until the seventh, when a walk and a pair of errors led to two runs and made it 3-0.  Each team scored once in the eighth.  In the ninth, a pair of walks, a pair of productive outs, and a single made the score 4-3 with two out, but a strikeout ended the game.
Of note:  Shannon Wilkerson was 0-for-4.  Travis Harrison was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-4 with a run.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-3 with a walk.

CLEARWATER 3, FORT MYERS 2 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Ryan Walker was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Mitch Garver was 2-for-4 with a run.  Jason Kanzler was 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
Pitching star:  Aaron Slegers pitched 8.1 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Willians Astudillo was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Aaron Brown was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Ricardo Pinto pitched 6.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
The game:  The Threshers got two in the second to go ahead 2-0.  The Miracle got one back on Kanzler's RBI triple with one out in the bottom of the second, but missed a chance to tie the score when they stranded him there.  It stayed 2-1 until the seventh, when two singles, a walk, and a passed ball tied the score.  The Miracle again missed a chance when they had men on second and third with two out and did not score.  In the ninth, an error, a walk, and an RBI single by Astudillo put the Threshers on top 3-2.  The Miracle got a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth, but nothing more.
Of note:  Zach Granite was 1-for-4.  Alex Swim was 0-for-4.

KANE COUNTY 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN KANE COUNTY

Batting stars:  Tanner English was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.
Pitching star:  Luke Westphal pitched six innings, giving up one run on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
Opposition stars:  Ildemaro Vargas was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Joe Munoz was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Josh Taylor pitched five innings, allowing an unearned runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
The game:  In the first inning, each team turned a leadoff double into a run.  It stayed 1-1 through six.  In the seventh, Gordon had an RBI double to give the Kernels a brief 2-1 lead.  In the bottom of the inning, a single, a hit batsman, another single, and two walks put the Cougars ahead 3-2.  They added a run in the eighth.  The Kernels did not get a man on base after the seventh inning.
Of note:  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Brett Doe was 0-for-4.  Sean Miller was 1-for-4.

ELIZABETHTON AT JOHNSON CITY

Rained out.

GCL TWINS 5, GCL RAYS 3 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Lewin Diaz was 3-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Luis Arraez was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Eduardo Del Rosario pitched five shutout innings, giving up five hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  Andrew Vasquez pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit with one strikeout.  Johan Quezada retired all four men he faced, striking out one.
Opposition stars:  Adrian Rondon was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run.  Juan Carlos Arias was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.  Sam Triece struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits.
The game:  Doubles by Arraez and Diaz led to a two-run third for the Twins.  Diaz singled in a run in the fifth to make it 3-0 and Arraez had an RBI single in the sixth to make it 5-0.  The Rays got all three of their runs in the eighth, aided by two walks, an error, and a wild pitch.  They had the tying run up to bat with two out, but their last four batters were retired.
Of note:  Trey Cabbage was 1-for-4.  Brian Olson was 0-for-4.

DSL TWINS 9, DSL GIANTS 8 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Jean Carlos Arias was 3-for-5 with a triple and a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Gorge Munoz was 1-for-5 with a two-run homer.  Emmanuel Morel was 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs.
Pitching star:  Randolph Perez pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Juan Rodriguez was 3-for-5 with two doubles and three runs.  Jose Morles was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Francisco Medina was 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
The game:  The Giants scored six runs in the first inning to go ahead 6-0.  Undaunted, the Twins started, as Dazzle says, pecking away at that lead, and trailed only 8-6 after six.  A wild pitch brought home a run in the eighth to make it 8-7.  In the ninth, Arias tripled in the tying run and scored the winning run on another wild pitch.
Of note:  Antonio Tovar was 0-for-4.  Juan Herrera struck out four in four innings, giving up seven runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks.
