Games of August 26


The Red Wings find a closer.  An excellent outing by Trevor May.  Tim Atherton continues to pitch well.

SYRACUSE 15, ROCHESTER 5 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Deibinson Romero was 3-for-5 with a home run (his tenth), driving in three.  Josmil Pinto was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.  Eduardo Escobar was 1-for-2 with two walks and a home run, his second.
Pitching star:  Ray Olmedo came in to finish up the game and retired both batters he faced.
Opposition stars:  Danny Espinosa was 3-for-6, scoring once and driving in two.  Jeff Kobernus was 2-for-5 with a walk and a double, scoring three times and driving in one.  Corey Brown was 1-for-3 with three walks and a home run, scoring twice and driving in two.
Key inning:  The first.  The Chiefs started the game with six runs.  A single and a walk put runners on first and second with two out.  A wild pitched advanced them and a walk loaded the bases.  Will Rhymes singled in two, an error brought home a third, and a three-run homer by Kris Watts gave Syracuse the early 6-0 lead.  The runs came off starter P. J. Walters.
Prospect watch:  Darin Mastroianni was 1-for-5.  Chris Parmelee was 1-for-5 and scored once.  Walters pitched two innings, giving up eight runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks with one strikeout.

NEW BRITAIN 5, TRENTON 3 IN TRENTON

Batting stars:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with two doubles and scored three times.  Brad Boyer was 3-for-3 with a walk and a double, driving in three.  Dan Rohlfing was 3-for-4 with an RBI.  The bottom four batters for the Rock Cats were 11-for-15.
Pitching stars:  Trevor May struck out nine in six shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.  Ryan O'Rourke retired all four batters he faced, striking out one.
Opposition stars:  Manny Barreda pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and one walk with two strikeouts.  Kyle Roller was 1-for-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch, scoring once and driving in one.
Key inning:  The ninth.  Trenton had scored three in the eighth to cut the Rock Cats lead to 4-3.  New Britain led off the ninth with singles by Jordan Parraz, Danny Santana, and Eddie Rosario to bring home an insurance run.
Prospect watch:  Rosario was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Miguel Sano was 0-for-3 with two walks.

PALM BEACH AT FORT MYERS

Rained out.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, PEORIA 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Jeremias Pineda was 3-for-4 with an RBI.  Tyler Grimes was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once.  Bo Altobelli was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Tim Atherton pitched seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits and no walks with six strikeouts.  Mason Melotakis struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and no walks.  Brian Gilbert pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and no walks with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Chris Perry pitched six innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Ildemaro Vargas was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Breyvic Valera was 2-for-4.
Key inning:  The second.  It was a scoreless tie.  In the top of the inning, consecutive one-out singles by Jordan Walton, Trevor Martin, and Juan Herrera loaded the bases and a ground out put the Chiefs ahead 1-0.  In the bottom half, Michael Quesada hit a two-out double, an error tied the score, and Pineda hit an RBI single to put the Kernels in front 2-1.
Prospect watch:  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.

ELIZABETHTON 11, PRINCETON 3 IN PRINCETON

Batting stars:  Zach Granite was 3-for-5 with a double and scored twice.  Bryan Haar was 2-for-3 with two walks and a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Zach Larson was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Austin Malinowski struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks.  Brandon Peterson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and no walks with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Hunter Lockwood was 3-for-4 with two doubles.  Leopoldo Correa was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Johnny Eierman was 2-for-3 with a triple.
Key inning:  The sixth.  The Twins trailed 3-1.  Granite, Engelb Vielma, and Haar all singled to make it 3-2.  Mitch Garver hit a two-run double to put Elizabethton ahead 4-3.  The next two batters fanned, but an error put runners on the corners, Romy Jimenez singled to make it 5-3, and Logan Wade hit a two-run single to put the Twins up 7-3.
Prospect watch:  Jimenez was 1-for-4, scoring once and driving in one.  Hein Robb struck out five in five innings, giving up three runs on ten hits and no walks.

GCL RAYS 8, GCL TWINS 2 AT RAYS

Batting star:  Alex Swim was 2-for-4.
Pitching stars:  Damian Defrank pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and no walks with one strikeout.  Zach Hayden pitched a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Kean Wong was 3-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jose Alonzo pitched five innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits and no walks with two strikeouts.  Thomas Milone was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.
Key inning:  The third.  The Rays trailed 1-0.  With one out, an error was followed by four consecutive singles.  Wong drove in one run and Nick Ciuffo drove in two.  A passed ball plated a fourth run to give the Rays a 4-1 lead.
