Games of May 21


No joy for Twins affiliates.  Poor starting pitching all around.  Rochester did the best.

ROCHESTER RED WINGS

No game scheduled.

RICHMOND 7, NEW BRITAIN 5 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Daniel Ortiz was 3-for-4 with a triple and a home run (his fourth), scoring twice.  Corey Wimberly was 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs.  Nate Hanson was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
PItching stars:  Jim Fuller pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits with one strikeout.  D. J. Baxendale pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits and a walk.  Ryan O'Rourke pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Devin Harris was 2-for-4 with two home runs and a walk, driving in three.  Tyler Graham was 3-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Angel Villalona was 3-for-5 with a double and a run.
The game:  Richmond scored four in the second to take a lead it would never relinquish.  Harris hit a two-run homer; the other two runs scored on three singles, a wild pitch, and an error.  Ortiz homered in the second to make it 4-1.  Each team scored once in the third, leaving it 5-2 Flying Squirrels.  Ortiz tripled and scored in the sixth and Mike Kvasnicka homered in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-4.  In the eighth, however, a wild pitch led to another run and Mario Lisson had an RBI double to build the lead back to 7-4.  Wimberly tripled and scored in the ninth but New Britain could not get the tying run on base.
Of note:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-5.  Starter Pat Dean pitched 4.1 innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and a walk with no strikeouts.

DUNEDIN 4, FORT MYERS 2 IN DUNEDIN

Batting stars:  Aderlin Mejia was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-4 with a run.
Pitching stars:  Tim Shibuya struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Brandon Peterson pitched a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Dalton Pompey was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, his fifth.  Derrick Chung was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Daniel Norris pitched five innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
The game:  An error put Fort Myers ahead 1-0 in the first.  Dunedin tied it in the second on an RBI double by Christian Lopes.  In the sixth, Pompey ignited a three-run rally with a home run.  A single and a double-plus-error produced two more runs and a 4-1 lead for the Blue Jays.  Mejia doubled and scored in the eighth to cut the lead to 4-2.  A pair of singles put the tying run on base with two out in the ninth, but that was as close as the Miracle would come.
Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-5.  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.  Starter David Hurlbut pitched six innings, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

BELOIT 9, CEDAR RAPIDS 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Jason Kanzler was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, his third.  Chad Christensen was 2-for-4 with a run.
Pitching stars:  Derrick Penilla struck out five in three shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.  Hudson Boyd pitched two shutout innings, giving up two walks and a strikeouts.
Opposition stars:  Andy Paz was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, scoring twice and driving in three.  Herschel Powell was 3-for-4 with two walks and a two-run homer, his second.  B. A. Vollmuth was 1-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.
The game:  A pair of doubles put Beloit up 1-0 in the second.  The Snappers then scored six in the third to put the game away early.  Paz had a two-run double and Powell a two-run homer in the inning.  It was 9-0 after four.  Cedar Rapids did not score until the sixth, when the Kernels got all four of their runs.  A walk, two singles, and the Kanzler three-run homer produced the runs.  Cedar Rapids did not get a man past first base after that.
Of note:  J. D. Williams was 0-for-3 with a run.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Starter Felix Jorge pitched 2.2 innings, surrendering seven runs on seven hits and five walks with two strikeouts.
