Games of May 17


Deibinson Romero leads Rochester to the only win of the day.  New Britain surrenders a run per inning while getting swept.  A good game for Josh Willingham.

ROCHESTER 9, TOLEDO 2 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Deibinson Romero was 2-for-5 with a triple and a home run (his third), scoring twice and driving in three.  Eric Farris was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his second.  Josh Willingham was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching stars:  Logan Darnell struck out eight in 5.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks.  Matt Hoffman struck out three in 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Mike Hessman was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Wade Gaynor was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Mike Belfiore pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit with one strikeout.
The game:  Rochester did not have a big inning but scored in each of the second through sixth, getting one in the second and two in each of the next four.  Willingham doubled and scored in the second, Farris hit a two-run homer in the third, Fryer drove in two with a single in the fourth, Romero had an RBI triple and scored in the fifth, and Romero struck again with a two-run homer in the sixth.  Both Toledo runs came in the sixth on a single, a walk, two more singles, and an error.
Of note:  Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-2 with two walks and two runs.  Chris Herrmann was 0-forr-5.

HARRISBURG 5, NEW BRITAIN 0 IN HARRISBURG (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Corey Wimberly was 1-for-3 with a double.
Pitching star:  Jim Fuller retired all four batters he faced.
Opposition stars:  Caleb Ramsey was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  A. J. Cole struck out eight in seven innings, giving up four hits and no walks.
The game:  Michael A. Taylor and Cutter Dykstra each homered in the third to put Harrisburg up 2-0.  Adrian Sanchez had an RBI single in the third to make it 3-0 and Ramsey had a two-run double in the fourth to make it 5-0.  The only time New Britain got a man as far as third base was the first inning, when Brad Boyer singled and stole second and third.  He did not try to steal home, however, and that was as close as the Rock Cats would get to scoring.
Of note:  Nate Hanson was 0-for-3.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-3.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-3.  Starter Virgil Vasquez struck out nine in 4.2 innings, but surrendered five runs on eight hits and two walks.

HARRISBURG 9, NEW BRITAIN 3 IN HARRISBURG (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Mike Kvasnicka was 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.
Pitching star:  Ryan O'Rourke pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Kevin Keyes was 3-for-3 with a home run (his third), scoring twice and driving in three.  Michael A. Taylor was 2-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer (his tenth), scoring twice.  Matt Skole was 2-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring three times.
The game:  Harrisburg scored on a double play in the second and got a two-run homer from Taylor in the third to go ahead 3-0.  New Britain scored twice in the third to cut it to 3-2, but the Senators came back with three in the bottom of the third, including a two-run homer by Justin Bloxom, to go up 6-2.  Nate Hanson doubled and scored on a Vargas single to make it 6-3 in the top of the fourth, but Harrisburg scored three more in the bottom of the fourth, including a two-run homer by Kevin Keyes, to put the game out of reach.
Of note:  Corey Wimberly was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Hanson was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Starter Matthew Summers pitched five innings, surrendering nine runs on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

DAYTONA 11, FORT MYERS 9 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Dalton Hicks was 2-for-4 with a walk and a two-run homer (his second), scoring twice.   Adam Brett Walker II was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.
Pitching stars:  None.
Opposition stars:  Pin-Chieh Chen was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring three times and driving in one.  Chadd Krist was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in two.  Jeimer Candelario was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.
The game:  It wasn't as close as the score sounds.  Daytona scored two in the second and four in the third, highlighted by a two-run single by Zeke DeVoss, to go ahead 6-0.  Single runs in the fourth and fifth made it 8-0 before Fort Myers got five in the bottom of the fifth to get back into the game.  Hicks hit a three-run homer in the inning.  The Cubs got one in the seventh and Chen had an RBI triple and scored in the ninth to put Daytona up 11-5.  The Miracle rallied in the bottom of the ninth with four runs, getting three walks, a single, and a three-run double by Walker II, but did not get the tying run on base.
Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs.  Max Kepler was 3-for-5 with a triple and a run.

BURLINGTON 7, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN BURLINGTON

Batting stars:  Bo Altobelli was 2-for-4 with a double.  Ryan Walker was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.
Pitching stars:  Brandon Bixler struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two walks.  Hudson Boyd pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Eric Aguilera was 2-for-2 with two walks, a double, and a home run (his second), scoring twice and driving in two.  Mike Fish was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, scoring twice and driving in two.  Chad Hinshaw was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.
The game:  Mitch Garver singled in a run in the first.  In the second, J. D. Williams walked, stole second, and scored on a pair of ground outs to put Cedar Rapids up 2-0.  It went downhill from there.  Aguilera homered leading off the bottom of the second to make it 2-1.  Burlington took the lead in the third, with Hinshaw getting an RBI double, Fish an RBI triple, and Aguilera an RBI double to put the Bees up 4-2.  Burlington got three more in the fifth, including RBI doubles by Fish and Brandon Bayardi, to put the game out of reach.
Of note:  Chad Christensen was 2-for-4.  Garver was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Starter Ryan Eades struck out seven in five innings, but surrendered seven runs on nine hits and two walks.
