Games of May 14


A tough game for Kyle Gibson. Adam Brett Walker II hits a grand slam. Byron Buxton does something you don't see very often.

DURHAM 7, ROCHESTER 4 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars: Antoan Richardson was 3-for-4 with a walk and scored twice. Ray Olmedo was 2-for-4 with a walk and scored twice. Chris Colabello was 2-for-5.
Pitching star: Luis Perdomo pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.
Opposition stars: Vince Belnome was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice. Rich Thompson was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in three. Shelley Duncan was 2-for-4 with a double and scored twice.
Key inning: The eighth. The Red Wings fell behind 4-0 early, but caught up to 4-3 and 5-4. In the eighth, though, Leslie Anderson led off the inning for the Bulls with a home run. Duncan then doubled, went to third on a ground out, and scored on a sacrifice fly to put the game out of reach. The runs scored off Daniel Turpen, who was in his third inning of relief.
Other: It was a rough night for Kyle Gibson, who gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk in only three innings. He did strike out three.

BOWIE 8, NEW BRITAIN 2 IN BOWIE

Batting stars: Daniel Ortiz was 1-for-3 with a double and scored once. Jason Christian was 1-for-4 with a triple and scored once.
Pitching stars: B. J. Hermsen gave up four unearned runs on five hits and two walks in six innings. Edgar Ibarra pitched a scoreless inning, striking out one.
Opposition stars: Devin Jones struck out seven in seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Henry Urrutia was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and scored twice. Ty Kelly was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.
Key inning: The eighth. The Rock Cats fell behind 4-0 early, but caught up to 4-2. In the eighth, though, Bobby Lanigan came in to pitch. A double and a single led off the inning, and a fielder's choice on which no out was recorded brought in a run. Urrutia then hit a three-run homer to make the score 8-2.

DUNEDIN 9, FORT MYERS 3 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars: Levi Michael was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once. Aderlin Mejia was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Pitching stars: None.
Opposition stars: Scott Copeland allowed two unearned runs on two hits and a walk in six innings. Derrick Chung was 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Shane Opitz was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.
Key inning: The sixth. The Miracle led 2-0. The Blue Jays led off the inning with a walk and a double. A wild pitch scored one run, a ground out scored another, and a single by K. C. Hobson put Dunedin in the lead. The Blue Jays went on to score four more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

CEDAR RAPIDS 5, BURLINGTON 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting star: Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-4, but the one was a grand slam, his tenth homer of the season. The Kernels had only four hits.
Pitching star: Brett Lee struck out ten in seven innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and a walk.
Opposition stars: Pedro Toribio was 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in two. Wendell Soto was 2-for-5, scoring once and driving in two. Cam Bedrosian struck out two in 2.1 innings, allowing an unearned run on no hits and no walks.
Key inning: The sixth. In a scoreless tie, three walks led to the bases being loaded with two out. Walker then hit a grand slam to put the Kernels up 4-0.
Other: The Kernels were out-hit 13-4 and made three errors, yet still won the game...In the seventh, Byron Buxton circled the bases on a rare four-base error.
