Mexican League: Games of November 17


Four one-run games.  Three 1-0 games.  A walkoff pinch-hit.

CULIACAN 1, GUASAVE 0 IN GUASAVE (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Culiacan:  Ali Solis was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.  Alejandro Armenta pitched six innings, giving up one hit and no walks with four strikeouts. Guasave:  Jose Rodriguez was 1-for-2 with the only Guasave hit, a single.  Orlando Lara struck out six in five innings, allowing one run on two hits and five walks. The game:  The lone run came in the second, when Richard Serrano walked, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Solis double.  The Guasave hit came with two out in the fourth.  They got a man to second in the seventh on a walk and a sacrifice bunt.

GUASAVE 1, CULIACAN 0 IN GUASAVE (GAME 2--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Culiacan:  Andres Mesa pitched a six-inning complete game, giving up one run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Guasave:  Leonardo Heras was 1-for-2 with a home run, his second.  Jesus Cota was 1-for-1 with a walk.  Marco Tovar struck out seven in six innings, allowing five hits and no walks. The game:  Heras homered to lead of the sixth for the only run of the game.  Culiacan's biggest scoring threat came in the second, when they had runners on second and third with two out.

NAVOJOA 1, LOS MOCHIS 0 IN NAVOJOA

Los Mochis:  Ben Kozlowski took a complete game loss, giving up an unearned run on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Navojoa:  Rolando Acosta was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Carlos Orrantia was 2-for-4.  Eddie Gamboa (Baltimore) pitched eight innings, allowing three hits and two walks with one strikeout. The game:  The lone run came in the sixth, when Acosta doubled and scored on a single-and-error by Yurendell de Caster.  The biggest Los Mochis threat also came in the sixth, when they had runners on first and second with one out.  Los Mochis did not get a man past second base.

HERMOSILLO 4, OBREGON 3 IN HERMOSILLO (10 INNINGS)

Obregon:  Doug Clark was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Agustin Murillo was 1-for-4 with a walk and a home run, his third.  Carlos Valencia was 1-for-4 with a walk and a home run, his fifth. Hermosillo:  Edgar Quintero was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Heber Gomez was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Jonathan Aceves was 1-for-3 with a walk and a three-run homer, his second. The game:  The Aceves three-run homer came in the second inning and gave Hermosillo a 3-1 lead.  The Murillo homer came in the fifth to make it 3-2.  In the sixth, Clark scored on a Sergio Contreras single to tie it up.  In the tenth, the first two Hermosillo batters went out.  A pair of singles put runners on first and third and an intentional walk loaded the bases.  Luis Borges pinch-hit a single to drive in the winning run.

MEXICALI 5, MAZATLAN 1 IN MEXICALI

Mazatlan:  Oswaldo Morejon was 2-for-4 with a run.  Bryan Petersen was 2-for-4. Mexicali:  Ricky Alvarez was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fifth) and two RBIs.  Ben Guez (Detroit) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring twice.  Marco Duarte pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits and one walk with one strikeout. The game:  The Alvarez homer came in the second and put Mexicali up 1-0.  Three singles tied the game in the top of the fourth, but Alvarez came through again with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to put Mexicali in front 2-1.  In the sixth, Russell Branyan hit a two-run homer and Xorge Carrillo delivered an RBI double to give Mexicali control of the game.
