A solid day for Daniel Ortiz goes for naught. It’s not Johnny Manziel, it’s Johnny Monell
leading Caguas.
CAROLINA 1, MAYAGUEZ 0 IN CAROLINA
Twins: Daniel Ortiz
was 2-for-4 with a double for Mayaguez.
Kennys Vargas was 0-for-2 with two walks for Mayaguez.
Mayaguez: Roberto
Perez (Cleveland) was 2-for-3 with a double.
Jorge Lopez (Milwaukee) pitched five shutout innings, giving up one hit
and one walk with four strikeouts.
Carolina: Irving Falu
(Cincinnati) was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring once. Masayoshi Tsukada was 2-for-3. Giovanni Soto (Cleveland) pitched five
shutout innings, allowing three hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
The game: The lone
run came in the sixth, when Falu doubled with one out and scored on an Ozzie
Martinez (Baltimore) single. Mayaguez
had five hits, two of them doubles.
CAGUAS 3, SAN JUAN 2 IN SAN JUAN
Caguas: Johnny Monell
(Mets) was 2-for-3 with two walks, scoring twice and driving in one. Edgardo Baez was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Efrain Nieves (Texas) pitched 5.1 innings,
giving up two runs on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
San Juan: Jon Garcia
(Dodgers) was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, driving in one. Jonathan Mota was 1-for-3 with a double and a
walk, scoring once. Shane Dyer pitched
two shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk with one strikeout.
The game: San Juan
led 2-0 after three, but Caguas scored once in the fourth and got two in the
sixth to take the victory. Monell
singled in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run on a Baez single.
