Games of April 30

Jose Berrios has nothing to learn in Rochester.  Another solid start for Fernando Romero.  A big comeback, aided by a stellar bullpen, adds up to a Miracle win.  The Kernels win a rain-shortened game.

ROCHESTER 5, LOUISVILLE 1 IN ROCHESTER

It was scoreless through six, but the Red Wings hit three home runs in a four-run seventh.  Matt Hague led off the inning with a home run (his third), Niko Goodrum hit a two-run homer (his third), and John Ryan Murphy homered (his first).  Jose Berrios took care of things from there, as he was dominant all day.

Berrios pitched eight shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out seven.  His ERA is 1.09 and his WHIP is 0.79 with 8 walks and 35 strikeouts in 33 innings.  Ehire Adrianza was 0-for-3 with a walk and is batting .304.  Tommy Field was 1-for-4 and is batting .314.  Hague was 1-for-3 and is batting .313.

CHATTANOOGA 9, JACKSON 4 IN JACKSON

A three-run fourth put the Lookouts up 4-0 and they cruised to victory from there.  It was 6-0 before the Generals got on the board and the lead was never less than five after that.

After a poor start to the season, Fernando Romero made his third consecutive solid start, striking out six in six innings and giving up just one run on seven hits and no walks.  His ERA is down to 2.96 and he has 25 strikeouts in 24.1 innings.  John Curtiss struck out three in a scoreless inning, keeping his ERA at zero through 8.1 innings.  He has walked six and struck out thirteen.  Dan Gamache was 3-for-5 with a triple and two doubles.  Jonathan Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with two walks.  Levi Michael was 2-for-4.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-5 with a double and has raised his average to .262 after a very poor first couple of weeks.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-5 with a triple and is batting .322.  Engelb Vielma was 1-for-4 and is batting .320.

FORT MYERS 8, DUNEDIN 6 IN FORT MYERS

The Blue Jays scored six runs in the second inning to go ahead 6-1, and it looked like it was going to be over early.  The Miracle kept chipping away at the lead, though, scoring single runs in the second, third, fifth, and seventh to cut the lead to 6-5.  In the eighth, Zack Granite (presumably there on a rehab assignment) tied it with an RBI double and Fort Myers got two runs on a sacrifice fly-plus-error to take the lead.

Starter Chris Anderson had a forgettable 2017 debut, lasting only two innings and giving up six runs on five hits and a walk with one strikeout.  The Miracle bullpen was stellar, though, throwing seven shutout innings.  Anthony McIver pitched three, giving up three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Sam Clay also pitched three, giving up two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Jonny Drozd pitched the last inning, dropping his ERA to 1.64 in 11 innings.  Max Murphy was 3-for-4 with two home runs.  He is 10-for-16 over his last four games and has raised his average from .207 to .297.  Chris Paul was 3-for-4 and is batting .319.  Kevin Garcia was 3-for-4 and in one game raised his average from .217 to .296.  Zander Weil was 2-for-5.  Shane Kennedy made his season debut and went 1-for-3.

CEDAR RAPIDS 1, PEORIA 0 (GAME 1--5 INNINGS--RAIN)

It was scheduled to be the first game of a doubleheader, but it ended early and game two was postponed.  Caleb Hamilton's RBI double in the fourth brought home the only run.  The Kernels were held hitless through three, but put together two hits in the fourth and it was enough.  The Chiefs had only one baserunner, getting a two-out single by Stefan Trosclair in the first inning.

Clark Beeker pitched a complete game, giving up one hit and no walks with three strikeouts.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-3 and is batting .393.  Ben Rortvedt was 0-for-2 and dropped back below .100 at .096.
