MAYAGUEZ 7, CAROLINA 6 IN CAROLINA
Twins: Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was 0-for-4. Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 2-for-2 with two walks and a home run (his fourth), scoring three times. Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 0-for-4.
Mayaguez: Jerry Sands (Pittsburgh) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer (his fourth), scoring twice.
Carolina: Osvaldo Martinez (Dodgers) was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run. Ruben Gotay was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer. David Kopp pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks with one strikeout.
The game: Robinson Cancel had a two-run single in the first to put Carolina ahead 2-0. Sands hit a two-run homer in the second to tie it. Back-to-back homers by Randy Ruiz and Vargas gave Mayaguez a 4-2 lead in the fourth and a home run by Irving Falu made it 5-2 in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, Gotay's two-run homer capped a four-run inning and put Carolina back in front 6-5. Mayaguez came back again in the sixth, getting a two-run single by Martin Maldonado to make it 7-6 Mayaguez. Carolina got a leadoff double in the ninth, but did not score.
SANTURCE 6, PONCE 3 IN SANTURCE
Ponce: Reymond Fuentes (San Diego) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once. Henry Ramos (Boston) was 2-for-4 with a run.
Santurce: Jonathan Singleton (Houston) was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, his fifth. Edgard Clemente was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Jorge Martinez pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
The game: Ponce scored single runs in the second and third to take a 2-0 lead. In the fifth, a Jack Lopez single tied the score and Singleton's three-run homer put Santurce ahead 5-2. Fuentes singled in a run in the seventh to make it 5-3 but Clemente got the run back with an RBI double in the eighth. Ponce went down in order in the ninth.
