Mexican League: Games of December 4


Ex-Twin Mario Valdez gets a key hit for Culiacan.  Two Contrerases were not contrary for Obregon.  Big innings decide things in Hermosillo and Navojoa.

CULIACAN 4, LOS MOCHIS 2 IN CULIACAN

Los Mochis:  Gilberto Mejia was 3-for-4 with a triple and a run.  Jake Fox was 2-for-4 with a home run, his eighth.  Emmanuel Avila was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Culiacan:  Jorge Cantu was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.  Luis Cruz was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Rodrigo Lopez pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
The game:  The scoring started in the fourth on two singles and an Ali Solis (Tampa Bay) double, putting Culiacan ahead 2-0.  Los Mochis tied it in the sixth on a Mejia triple and a Fox home run, but in the bottom of the sixth, Mario Valdez singled in the go-ahead run and an insurance run scored on an infield out.  Los Mochis did not get the tying run on base after that.

OBREGON 4, GUASAVE 2 IN GUASAVE

Obregon:  Albino Contreras was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.  Sergio Contreras was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs.  Rolando Valdez pitched six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
Guasave:  Japhet Amador (Houston) was 2-for-4 with a run.  Jesus Lopez was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.  Alan Guerrero struck out two in two perfect innings.
The game:  Albino Contreras hit a two-run homer in the second to put Obregon up 2-0.  A two-run single by Eduardo Arredondo tied it in the bottom of the second.  It stayed tied until the sixth, when RBI singles by Albino Contreras and Said Gutierrez gave Obregon a 4-2 advantage.  Guasave put the tying run on base in the ninth with a pair of walks, but did not get a hit after the sixth.

HERMOSILLO 6, MEXICALI 0 IN HERMOSILLO

Mexicali:  Chris Roberson was 2-for-4.  Terry Doyle pitched 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
Hermosillo:  Jose Amador was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.  Yunesky Sanchez was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Nathan Reed struck out three in three shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks.
The game:  It was scoreless until the sixth, when with two out and none on Hermosillo got four singles and a double to take a 4-0 lead.  Heber Gomez had a two-run double in the inning.  Hermosillo added two in the eighth.  Mexicali's biggest scoring threat came in the sixth, when they had runners on first and third with one out.

NAVOJOA 11, MAZATLAN 3 IN NAVOJOA

Mazatlan:  Blake Gailen was 2-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer, his fifth.  Henry Mateo was 2-for-4 with a run.  Julio Montoya pitched 3.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
Navojoa:  Fernando Flores was 3-for-4 with a home run (his third), scoring twice and driving in two.  Jon Weber was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring twice and driving in three.  Salvador Robles struck out six in six innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits and one walk.
The game:  Mazatlan scored on an error in the top of the first, but Navojoa got six in the bottom of the first and Mazatlan never got back into the game.  The first three batters walked, John Lindsey had a two-run single, and later Carlos Orrantia had a two-run double.  The first five batters and eight of the first nine reached base.  Navojoa eventually built an 11-1 lead before Mazatlan scored two in the eighth.
