Venezuelan Winter League: Games of October 19

Two four-run innings give Zulia a win.  Bases on balls kill Lara.  A walk-off single for La Guaira.

ZULIA 9, MARGARITA 2 IN MARGARITA

Twins:  Aaron Hicks was 1-for-4.

Zulia:  Giovanny Urshela (Cleveland) was 2-for-5 with a grand slam (his second homer).  Jose Flores was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once and driving in three.  Eric Marzec (Milwaukee) pitched five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

Margarita:  Gerson Montilla (Arizona) was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.  Wilfredo Tovar (Mets) was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.  Alfred Gutierrez (Tigers) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing two walks.

The game:  Urshela's grand slam in the third put Zulia up 4-1.  Flores had a three-run triple in a four-run eighth that put the game out of reach.

MAGALLANES 8, LARA 7 IN MAGALLANES (10 INNINGS)

Twins:  Dubal Baez was used as a pinch-runner by Lara and scored.

Lara:  Paulo Orlando (Kansas City) was 2-for-5 with a home run and a double, driving in four.  Brian Hernandez (Angels) was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Tim Gustafson (Colorado) struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Magallanes:  Carlos Maldonado (Washington) was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Luis Nunez (Tampa Bay) was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Bobby Blevins (Dodgers) pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout.

The game:  Orlando's two-run homer came in a three-run Lara ninth that tied the score at seven.  In the tenth, four walks, all coming with two out, brought home the winning run for Magallanes.

ARAGUA 2, LA GUAIRA 1 IN ARAGUA (11 INNINGS)

La Guaira:  Alex Castellanos (San Diego) was 2-for-5 with two doubles.  Kendy Batista pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Aragua:  Jose Martinez (Oakland) was 2-for-5 with a run.  Teodoro Martinez (Texas) was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Chris Smith (San Diego) pitched six shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

The game:  There was no score until the eighth, when each team scored once.  In the eleventh, Jose Martinez singled, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Gustavo Molina (Colorado) single to win the game.

ANZOATEGUI 8, CARACAS 3 IN CARACAS

Anzoategui:  Tomas Perez (Colorado) was 2-for-4 with a triple and a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Gorkys Hernandez was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Jose Alvarez (Angels) struck out four in 3.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk.

Caracas:  Josh Whitesell was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.  Henry Alejandro Rodriguez (Cincinnati) was 3-for-5 with a run.  Kyler Newby (Angels) pitched two shutout innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout.

The game:  Trailing 2-1 after four, Anzoategui scored seven runs in the fifth to take control.  Oscar Salazar had a two-run double in the inning.
