BINGHAMTON 8, NEW BRITAIN 1 IN NEW BRITAIN
Batting stars: Danny Lehmann doubled and Nathan Hanson singled. Those were the only two Rock Cats hits.
Pitching star: David Bromberg struck out eight in six innings, giving up a run on three hits and three walks.
Opposition stars: Raul Reyes was 3-for-5 with a three-run homer. Zack Wheeler allowed a run on two hits and two walks, striking out six in eight innings.
Key inning: The ninth. Leading 3-1, the Mets scored five times to put the game out of reach. With one out, Brett Jacobson walked Matt Den Dekker. An error followed, then Reyes hit his three-run homer. The next two batters walked, there was a ground out, then two more walks which forced in a run. Jacobson was replaced by Bobby Lanigan, who hit the first batter he faced, forcing in another run, before retiring the side.
Other: New Britain made two errors. My guess would be that the record of teams with as many or more errors than hits is not good.
CLEARWATER 4, FORT MYERS 3 IN FORT MYERS
Batting stars: Josmil Pinto was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Daniel Ortiz was 2-for-4 with a double. Daniel Rohlfing was 2-for-4.
Pitching stars: Pat Dean worked three innings, allowing two hits, before being removed following a rain delay. Jose Gonzalez gave up one run on two hits and a walk in five innings.
Opposition stars: Peter Lavin was 2-for-4. Drew Hillman hit a home run. Austin Wright pitched two shutout innings.
Key inning: The ninth. Leading 3-1, Ricky Bowen came in to close out the game for the Miracle. A walk, a wild pitch, two singles, and another wild pitch made the score 3-2 with runners on second and third and none out. A sacrifice fly tied the score and Cameron Rupp’s RBI single plated the go-ahead run. Fort Myers got a one out single by Lance Ray in the bottom of the ninth, but he did not move past first base.
Other: The Miracle out-hit the Threshers 12-7.
CEDAR RAPIDS 5, BELOIT 3 IN BELOIT
Batting stars: Adam Bryant was 2-for-4. Tyler Grimes was 0-for-1 but walked twice.
Pitching star: Ryan O’Rourke struck out two in two perfect innings.
Opposition stars: Gary Mitchell was 2-for-3 with two home runs, driving in three. Frazier Hall was 2-for-5. Jairo Diaz gave up two runs on five hits and three walks in six innings.
Key inning: The sixth. Leading 3-2, the Kernels started the inning with an error and Mitchell’s two run homer to go ahead 5-2.
Other: Prior to that sixth inning, the Snappers had two runners thrown out at home in the fifth.
