Games of May 16

A bullpen failure by the Red Wings.  Nik Turley is too good for AA.  Chris Paul delivers a walkoff.  Jaylin Davis hits three home runs.
LEHIGH VALLEY 9, ROCHESTER 5 IN ROCHESTER
Daniel Palka hit a three-run homer in a four-run third that put the Red Wings ahead 5-0.  Unfortunately, the IronPigs came back with a six-run fifth to go ahead 7-5 and led the rest of the way.  Jorge Alfaro had a three-run double and Dylan Cozens a two-run homer in the inning.  Rochester had only one hit after the third inning.  Ex-Twin Pedro Florimon was 1-for-3 with a walk and is batting .263.
Starter Adalberto Mejia was removed after three innings, leading to speculationt that he'll be coming back to the Twins' starting rotation.  He gave up no runs and just one hit.  The big fifth inning came off Nick Tepesch, who pitched 1.2 innings and allowed six runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks.  Zack Granite was 2-for-4 with a double and is batting .324.  Bengie Gonzalez was 2-for-4.  Palka was 1-for-4 and the home run was his sixth.  Engelb Vielma got his first AAA hit, going 1-for-3.
CHATTANOOGA 4, BIRMINGHAM 1 IN CHATTANOOGA
The Lookouts opened the first inning with four consecutive hits, producing a 2-0 lead.  They added two in the fourth on Nick Gordon's two-run homer.  The Barons scored their lone run in the sixth.  The win was Chattanooga's fourth in a row and their eighth consecutive home win.
Nik Turley, back from a brief stint in Rochester, continued his dominance of AA, striking out nine in four innings while giving up just one hit and one walk.  He threw 64 pitches.  There was no obvious reason for him to be pulled--my assumption is it was because he had pitched just six innings over three weeks in his call-up to AAA.  In 24.1 innings of AA, he has an ERA of 0.37 and has allowed 6 hits and 7 walks with 45 strikeouts.  Matt Tracy struck out four in four innings of relief, giving up one run on four hits and a walk.  Nick Burdi pitched a scoreless inning to lower his ERA to 0.61.  Gordon was 2-for-4 with a double as well as his third home run.  He is batting .322.  Edgar Corcino was 2-for-4 with a double and is batting .306.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4 and is batting .327.  Ryan Strausborger was 0-for-3 in his season debut.
FORT MYERS 5, CLEARWATER 2 IN FORT MYERS
The Miracle scored two in the first and the Threshers tied it with two in the fifth.  It remained 2-2 going to the bottom of the ninth.  Brian Navarreto reached on an error and was bunted to second.  An intentional walk and a wild pitch put men on second and third with one out.  A strikeout made it two down, but Chris Paul hit a three-run walkoff homer to win the game for Fort Myers.
David Fischer pitched 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts.  Alex Muren pitched two shutout innings to lower his ERA to 1.93.  Nick Anderson struck out two in two shutout innings to drop his ERA to 1.10.  He has 16 strikeouts and just 2 walks in 16.1 innings.  Paul was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk in addition to the home run, which was his second.   He is batting .327.  Max Murphy was 2-for-4 with a double.
CEDAR RAPIDS 7, PEORIA 6 IN CEDAR RAPIDS
It was tied 3-3 after five and 4-4 after seven.  In the eighth, an RBI triple by Christian Cavaness gave the Kernels the lead and a two-run double by Lewin Diaz later in the inning made it 7-4.  The Chiefs started the ninth with two singles, a walk, and another single, cutting the lead to 7-5 and leaving the bases loaded with none out.  A ground out made it 7-6, but the next two batters struck out to end the game.
Tyler Beardsley pitched six innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Jaylin Davis was 3-for-4 with three home runs, his fifth, sixth, and seventh.  He had four RBIs.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-2 with a walk and is batting .326.

Games of May 15

Kyle Gibson takes a loss despite only giving up one run.  A solid outing for Randy LeBlanc.  Cody Stashak and Chris Paul keep it going.  The Kernels blow a big lead, then come back to win a bullpen game.

LEHIGH VALLEY 1, ROCHESTER 0 IN ROCHESTER

The game's lone run came in the fourth on a leadoff homer by J. P. Crawford.  The Red Wings had only two hits, a single by Zack Granite and a double Tommy Field.  Ex-Twin Pedro Florimon was 2-for-3 for the IronPigs and is batting .257.  Ex-Twin Casey Fien made his Lehigh Valley debut by retiring both men he faced, one by strikeout.
The shutout wasted good pitching by Kyle Gibson, who struck out ten in 6.1 innings while giving up one run on six hits and four walks.  Kevin Chapman retired all five men he faced, striking out three.  Drew Rucinski struck out two in a scoreless inning to drop his ERA to 2.84.  He has 16 strikeouts and just 2 walks in 12.2 innings.  Granite was 1-for-4 and is batting .303.  Engelb Vielma made his major league debut and went 0-for-3.

CHATTANOOGA 6, BIRMINGHAM 0 IN CHATTANOOGA

The Lookouts scored one in the first and one in the fourth but did not take control until the eighth, when they scored four runs.  They had only two hits in the inning, both infield singles.  They also drew four walks and had a hit batsman.  The Barons out-hit Chattanooga 7-6.  Twins Baseball!
Randy LeBlanc had his third consecutive good start after a disastrous AA debut.  He pitched six innings, giving up seven hits and a walk with no strikeouts.  Randy Rosario struck out four in three shutout innings of relief, lowering his ERA to 2.21.  T. J. White led the offense by going 2-for-4 in his AA debut.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a triple and is batting .317.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-2 with a walk and is batting .300.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4 and is batting .330.

FORT MYERS 7, CLEARWATER 3 IN CLEARWATER

With the scored tied 2-2, the Miracle opened the bottom of the third with four extra-base hits to take a 5-2 lead.  Bradley Strong homered, Alex Perez and Chris Paul doubled, and Zander Weil tripled.  There was no more scoring until the eighth.  The Threshers cut the lead to 5-3, but Brian Navaretto hit a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Cody Stashak had his third consecutive solid outing, going six innings and giving up two runs on five hits and four walks and three strikeouts.  He has taken nearly a run off his ERA in those three starts.  Williams Ramirez struck out two in a scoreless inning to drop his ERA to 1.89.  He has struck out 23 and walked 11 in 19 innings.  Max Murphy was 2-for-4 with a home run, his third.  Chris Paul was 2-for-4 with a double and is batting .322.  Tanner English made his season debut at Class A and went 1-for-3.

PEORIA 12, CEDAR RAPIDS 8 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

The Kernels scored seven runs in the third to take an 8-3 lead, but it wasn't enough.  The Chiefs got three in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth to tie it 8-8.  In the seventh, Dylan Carlson singled in the go-ahead run and Vincent Jackson (not Bo) hit a three-run homer to put the game out of reach.
Eduardo Del Rosario had his fourth consecutive poor outing, going five innings and allowing seven runs on five hits and three walks with one strikeout.  In that span, his ERA has gone from 2.75 to 5.29.  Travis Blankenhorn was 2-for-3 with a walk to lead the offense.  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-2 with a walk and is now batting .317 after being over .400 a couple of weeks ago.  The Kernels had only five hits but drew six walks.

CEDAR RAPIDS 2, PEORIA 0 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Caleb Hamilton singled in a run in the fourth and Jermaine Palacios homered in the fifth.  Three pitchers combined to shut out the Chiefs in what appears to have been a bullpen game.  They combined to strike out nine in the seven innings.
Max Cordy struck out three in three innings, giving up three hits an a walk.  Colton Davis struck out three in two innings, giving up one hit.  Tom Hackimer struck out three in two innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  His ERA is 1.89, striking out 21 with just 2 walks in 19 innings.  Palacios was 2-for-3 with his third home run.  It was his first multi-hit game in two weeks and raised his average to .324.

LaMonte Wade got the key hit and John Curtiss remains unscored upon.

ROCHESTER AT PAWTUCKET

Rained out.

CHATTANOOGA 5, BIRMINGHAM 4 IN CHATTANOOGA

There was no score through five.  Nick Basto homered in the top of the sixth to put the Barons up 1-0, but the Lookouts scored three in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead.  Keon Barnum's two-run homer in the top of the seventh tied it 3-3, but Chattanooga got the runs back on LaMonte Wade's two-run single.  Basto hit another home run with two out in the eighth to make it 5-4, but that was the last hit Birmingham had.
Paul Clemens pitched five shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  He threw just 78 pitches.  John Curtiss struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings to keep his ERA at zero.  He has 18 strikeouts in 13.2 innings.  Ryan Walker was 2-for-3 with a home run.  Dan Gamache was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Wade was 2-for-4 and is batting .333.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 and is batting .319.

Games of May 13

Byungho Park hits his first home run.  A comeback by the Lookouts and a Miracle comeback by Fort Myers.  A big start for Cedar Rapids.

ROCHESTER 3, PAWTUCKET 1 IN PAWTUCKET

There was no score until the fifth, when Mitch Garver hit his second home run of the season to put the Red Wings up 1-0.  They added a run in the seventh on back-to-back two-out doubles by Ben Paulsen and Leonardo Reginatto and another in the eighth when Byungho Park hit his first home run.  Ryan Court homered for the only Red Sox run in the eighth.
Aaron Slegers, who has been hot and cold all year, was hot in this one, going 7.1 innings and giving up just one run on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts.  Manager Mike Quade then took a page from Paul Molitor's book and used three relievers to get the last five outs.  Garver was 3-for-4 and had a double along with his home run.  Paulsen was 2-for-4 with two doubles.  Zack Granite was 1-for-4 and is batting .310.

CHATTANOOGA 9, BIRMINGHAM 6 IN CHATTANOOGA

The Barons led 3-1 after six.  Edgar Corcino's two-run single capped a three-run seventh that put the Lookouts up 4-3.  The Barons took the lead back 5-4 in the top of the eighth on Cleuluis Rondon's two-run double.  Chattanooga took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth, scoring five times.  Two-run doubles by Dan Rohlfing and Corcino helped put the game out of reach.
Fernando Romero pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Jonathan Rodriguez was 3-for-5.  Corcino was 2-for-2 with a double and four RBIs.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with a walk and is batting .321.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-3 with two walks and is batting .327.

FORT MYERS 7, CHARLOTTE 6 IN CHARLOTTE

The Miracle trailed 6-1 after seven.  A four-run eighth, capped off by a two-run single by Kevin Garcia and helped by two walks and a hit batsman, got Fort Myers back into the game.  In the ninth, an error was followed by Shane Kennedy's game-tying triple and an RBI double by Chris Paul that put the Miracle ahead 7-6.
Dereck Rodriguez had a bad inning in the fifth, giving up three runs, but overall was okay, going six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  His ERA is 2.80.  Nick Anderson had not allowed a run all season, but gave up two of them in this game in one inning, making his ERA 1.26.  Sam Clay pitched two shutout innings to make his ERA 2.66.  Paul was 3-for-5 with a double and is batting .317.  Kennedy was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Zander Weil and Sean Miller were each 2-for-5.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, BOWLING GREEN 5 IN BOWLING GREEN

The Kernels scored five in the first inning, getting a three-run double by Caleb Hamilton and a two-run homer from Christian Cavaness, his second.  Lewin Diaz hit a two-run homer in the second (his fourth) to make it 7-0.  Cedar Rapids hung on from there.  Jonah Heim's three-run homer in the seventh made it 7-5.  The Hot Rods got the tying run on base in the eighth and had the tying run at bat in the ninth, but could make nothing of it.
Clark Beeker had pitched well again until the three-run homer in the seventh.  For the game, he pitched six innings and allowed five runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts, making his ERA 2.56.  Colton Davis pitched a perfect inning and Andrew Vasquez struck out four in 1.1 scoreless innings.  Vasquez now has an ERA of 1.84 and has 23 strikeouts with 6 walks in 14.2 innings.  Diaz was 3-for-5 and had a double in addition to the home run.  Cavaness was 2-for-4 and had a double in addition to his home run.  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-5 and is now batting .321.

Games of May 12

Zack Granite keys a Red Wings win.  A three-run, no-hit rally leads the Lookouts, as Ryan Eades saves the bullpen.  The Miracle gets blown out.  A big day for Mitchell Kranson leads the Kernels.

ROCHESTER 3, PAWTUCKET 2 IN PAWTUCKET

It was tied 1-1 after seven.  Zack Granite hit a one-out double in the eighth and scored on a triple by Niko Goodrum, who scored on Matt Hague's sacrifice fly to give the Red Wings a 3-1 lead.  The Red Sox got a run in the ninth but did not put the tying run on base.  Ex-Twin Heiker Meneses was 0-for-1 and is batting .222.  Ex-Twin Blaine Boyer pitched two innings and surrendered the two eighth-inning runs.
Jason Wheeler had his second good start of the year, going six innings and giving up one run on five hits and no walks with no strikeouts.  Trevor Hildenberger pitched two shutout innings to lower his ERA to 2.13.  Granite was 3-for-4 with two doubles, getting three of the five Rochester hits.  He is batting .320.  Byungho Park was 0-for-4 and is 0-for-13 since coming back from the disabled list.

CHATTANOOGA 9, MONTGOMERY 2 IN MONTGOMERY

The Biscuits led 2-0 after three, but it was all Lookouts after that.  It was tied 2-2 after five and Chattanooga scored three in the sixth to go into the lead to stay.  It was quite a rally--with one out, a hit batsman and four consecutive walks plated two and a sacrifice fly scored a third.  Three runs on no hits, but they all count.  The Lookouts added two in the seventh and two in the ninth.  Montgomery out-hit Chattanooga 11-8, but the Lookouts drew eleven walks and had two hit batsmen.  Chattanooga really should have scored more--they were 2-for-14 with men in scoring position and stranded ten.
Felix Jorge pitched 4.2 innings, giving up just two runs (one earned) on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Ryan Eades struck out six in 4.1 innings of relief.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer (his fourth) and a walk, driving in three.  He is batting .327.  Jonathan Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double and scored three times.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-5 with a walk and is batting .315.  Engelb Vielma was 1-for-2 with two walks and is batting .301.

CHARLOTTE 11, FORT MYERS 2 IN CHARLOTTE

The Stone Crabs scored four in the first and three in the third and cruised to a win.  The Miracle scored single runs in the fourth and the seventh but never threatened to get back into the game.
Chris Anderson had his third consecutive poor start, going three innings and surrendering eleven runs (ten earned) on eleven hits and four walks with three strikeouts.  His ERA is now 18.90.  The bullpen did well, although it can be easier to pitch when the game is gone.  Michael Theofanopoulos pitched two shutout innings, Anthony McIver pitched 1.2 scoreless, and Alex Muren pitched 1.1 scoreless innings.  Fort Myers had only three hits.  Chris Paul was 1-for-3 with a double and is batting .307.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, BOWLING GREEN 3 IN BOWLING GREEN

Jaylin Davis had a two-run double in the first.  The Kernels added two in the third and the lead was never less than three after that.
Domenick Carlini struck out five in five innings but gave up three runs on four hits and two walks.  Alex Robinson and Tom Hackimer each pitched two shutout innings, with Hackimer lowering his ERA to 2.12.  Mitchell Kranson was 4-for-5 with two doubles.  Davis, Lewin Diaz, and Travis Blankenhorn were each 2-for-5.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-5 and is now batting .333.

Games of May 11

A comeback win for the Red Wings.  A big inning sinks the Lookouts.  A smaller "big inning" sinks the Miracle.  The Kernels get ten-runned.
ROCHESTER 3, PAWTUCKET 2 IN PAWTUCKET
A Matt Dominguez ground-rule double put the Red Sox ahead 2-1 in the seventh.  It stayed there until the ninth.  With men on first and third with two out, Bengie Gonzalez and Zack Granite delivered RBI singles to give the Red Wings a 3-2 lead.  Pawtucket went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Adalberto Mejia pitched 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  Alan Busenitz struck out three in a scoreless inning to drop his ERA to 2.92.  Drew Rucinski retired all four batters he faced.  Granite and Gonzalez were each 2-for-4.
MONTGOMERY 7, CHATTANOOGA 1 IN MONTGOMERY
The Biscuits got all seven of their runs in the second inning.  They had two out and a man on second when the next seven batters reached base, two on walks, four on singles, and one on a double.  The lone Lookout run scored on a ground out in the fifth inning.  Chattanooga had only three hits.
Matt Tracy made it through three innings, using ninety-three pitches to do it.  He gave up seven runs on nine hits and three walks with four strikeouts.  Randy Rosario struck out four in three shutout innings to lower his ERA to 2.60.  Nick Burdi retired all six batters he faced, three by strikeout, to make his ERA 0.66.  He has 18 strikeouts and 4 walks in 13.2 innings.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-4 and is batting .320.  LaMonte Wade was 0-for-3 with a walk and is batting .316.
CHARLOTTE 3, FORT MYERS 2 IN CHARLOTTE
The Stone Crabs scored all three of their runs in the first inning and made it stand up.  Brian Navarreto's RBI double in the second made the score 3-2, but neither team would dent the plate again.  The Miracle did not get a man past first base after the second inning.  They had nine hits, but the other eight were all singles.
Lachlan Wells did well after the first, but his line is six innings, three runs, eight hits, and no walks with two strikeouts.  Brady Anderson struck out two in two shutout innings of relief.  Navarreto was 2-for-3.  Bradley Strong was 2-for-4 and is batting .364 (4-for-11).  Chris Paul was 1-for-4 and is batting .306.
BOWLING GREEN 10, CEDAR RAPIDS 0 IN BOWLING GREEN
It was scoreless through three, but the Hot Rods got two in the fourth, two more in the fifth, one in the sixth, and capped it off with five in the seventh.  The Kernels had just four hits.
Sean Poppen pitched well through three, but went six innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on nine hits and one walk with six strikeouts.  Logan Lombana pitched a scoreless inning to lower his ERA to 1.59.  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-4 to drop his average to .339.  He was batting .398 on May 2 but has gone 6-for-34 since.

Games of May 10

Three teams play extra innings, but Cedar Rapids provides the only win.  David Hurlbut and Randy LeBlanc each pitched well in defeat.  Keaton Steele continues to struggle.
LEHIGH VALLEY 2, ROCHESTER 1 IN LEHIGH VALLEY (11 INNINGS)
Daniel Palka doubled leading off the second and scored on a Ben Paulsen single to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead.  The IronPigs tied it 1-1 in the fourth, and there things stood until the eleventh.  Dylan Cozens led off the bottom of the eleventh with a home run to give Lehigh Valley the victory.  Switch-pitcher Pat Venditte pitched two perfect innings for the IronPigs.
David Hurlbut pitched six innings, giving up one run on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  His ERA is now 1.59.  Trevor Hildenberger pitched a scoreless inning to drop his ERA to 2.59.  Nik Turley pitched two shutout innings to make his ERA 1.50.  Palka was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Byung-Ho Park returned to the lineup from the disabled list and went 0-for-5.
MONTGOMERY 4, CHATTANOOGA 3 IN MONTGOMERY (12 INNINGS)
RBI singles by Jonathan Rodriguez in the first and by Engelb Vielma in the fourth gave the Lookouts a 2-0 lead.  The Biscuits tied it in the fifth on Nathan Lukes' two-run triple-plus-error.  Each team scored once in the eleventh and missed a chance to score more, as Chattanooga left the bases loaded and Montgomery left two on.  In the twelfth, Alec Sole single, was bunted to second, and scored on a Michael Russell single to win the game.
After a terrible AA debut, Randy LeBlanc may be finding his footing, as he has improved every game.  In this one he pitched seven innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Raul Fernandez pitched two shutout innings, lowering his ERA to 1.59.  Mason Melotakis allowed his first run of the season, giving him an ERA of 0.60.  LaMonte Wade was 3-for-5 and is batting .326.  Vielma was 2-for-5 and is batting .308.  Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with a walk.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-6 with a double and is batting .331.
PALM BEACH 5, FORT MYERS 0 IN FORT MYERS
The Cardinals opened the game with two doubles and a single, taking a 2-0 lead before an out was recorded.  Four singles and a double produced three more runs in the second.  Starter Keaton Steele came out at that point, but the damage was done.  The Miracle had eight hits, two of them doubles, and two walks, but stranded nine and went 0-for-8 with men in scoring position.
Steele made his sixth start and has yet to have a good one.  Here he pitched 1.2 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits and no walks, with one strikeout, raising his ERA to 9.11  and his WHIP to 2.06.  He had a decent year in Fort Myers last year--it seems likely that he's either doing something wrong mechanically or he's hiding an injury.  Four relievers shut down Palm Beach the rest of the way.  Jonny Drozd pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, dropping his ERA to 1.65, Williams Ramirez pitched two shutout innings, lowering his ERA to 2.00, Sam Clay pitched a scoreless inning to make his ERA 2.95, and Nick Anderson also pitched a scoreless inning to keep his ERA at zero with 13 strikeouts in 13.1 innings.  Sean Miller was 3-for-4 to lead the offense.  Bradley Strong was 2-for-4.  Chris Paul was 0-for-4 to drop his average to .308.
CEDAR RAPIDS 6, DAYTON 5 IN DAYTON (10 INNINGS)
Aaron Whitefield singled and scored in the ninth to give the Kernels a 5-3 lead, but Taylor Trammell (apparently no relation to Alan) hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to tie it 5-5.  With one out in the tenth, Travis Blankenhorn and Caleb Hamilton walked and Shane Carrier delivered an RBI single to give Cedar Rapids a 6-5 lead.  The Dragons got a man to third with two out in the bottom of the tenth, but Tom Hackimer came in to strike out Avain Rachal to end the game.
Tyler Wells struck out six in five innings, but gave up three runs on four hits and two walks.  His ERA is 2.65.  Hector Lujan pitched two shutout innings to drop his ERA to 1.88.  Carrier was 3-for-4 and Lewin Diaz was 3-for-5 with a double to lead the offense.  Ariel Montesino was 2-for-3 with a double.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-5 and is batting .350.
