Games of August 20


ROCHESTER 9, PAWTUCKET 6 IN PAWTUCKET

Batting stars:  Tsuyoshi Nishioka was 2-for-5.  Wilkin Ramirez hit a grand slam, his eleventh homer of the season.  Brian Dinkelman hit a two-run homer, his fourth.
Pitching star:  Esmerling Vasquez gave up two runs on three hits and three walks in six innings.
Opposition stars:  Nate Spears was 3-for-4 with a triple.  Tony Pena, Jr. worked 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit.
Key inning:  The third.  The score was tied at one.  A walk, a single, and another walk loaded the bases and Ramirez hit a grand slam.  Another single, a Brian Dozier double, and a sacrifice fly scored a fifth run.  Dinkelman followed with a two-run homer to make the score 8-1.

PORTLAND 4, NEW BRITAIN 3 IN NEW BRITAIN (10 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Oswaldo Arcia was 2-for-4 with a double.
Pitching star:  Blake Martin retired all four batters he faced, two by strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Ryan Dent was 3-for-4 with a double.  Zach Gentile was 2-for-2 with a walk and two doubles.  Drake Britton worked seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk.
Key inning:  The tenth.  In a 3-3 tie, the Sea Dogs scored the winning run.  Travis Shaw led off the inning with a double and scored when Peter Hissey fit a ground ball up the middle for an RBI single.
Other:  The Rock Cats had their chances, stranding nine runners and going 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

BELOIT 8, QUAD CITIES 2 IN QUAD CITIES

Batting stars:  Kennys Vargas was 3-for-5.  Nate Roberts was 2-for-3 with a walk and two doubles.  Drew Leachman was 2-for-5 with a double.
Pitching stars:  Cole Johnson pitched five shutout innings, striking out seven while giving up two hits and walking one.  Mason Melotakis struck out all four batters he faced.
Opposition stars:  David Medina was 2-for-4 with a double.  Jonathan Cornelius did not allow a hit or a walk in 3.1 scoreless innings.  Dixon Llorens struck out five in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.
Key inning:  The second.  It was a scoreless tie.  Two singles, an error, and a balk plated two runs.  Two walks loaded the bases, and another balk scored the third run.  It was a three-run inning with no RBIs.
Other:  A total of three balks were called in the game, all on Quad Cities pitchers.

GREENEVILLE 6, ELIZABETHTON 5 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-5 with a triple.  Adam Walker was 2-for-5 with a double.  Travis Harrison walked and hit a two-run homer, his fourth.
Pitching star:  Kaleb Merck struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Ariel Ovando was 2-for-2 with two walks and two home runs.  He scored three times and drove in three.  Terrell Joyce was 2-for-4 with two doubles.
Key inning:  The sixth.  Each team scored one in the second and three in the fourth for a 4-4 tie.  The Astros scored two in the top of the inning on a Rio Ruiz double, a walk, an RBI single by Jose Fernandez, and a wild pitch.  In the bottom of the inning, the Twins mounted a two-out rally.  Two singles and a walk loaded the bases and Walker delivered an RBI single to make it 6-5.  D. J. Hicks then struck out to end the threat.
Other:  The Twins got the tying run to third in the seventh and eighth as well, but could not score him.  Elizabethton out-hit Greeneville 13-7, stranding fourteen runners.

GCL TWINS 4, RAYS 1 AT TWINS

Batting star:  Bryan Santy claws his way onto the list by going 1-for-2 with a walk.
Pitching star:  Kuo Hua Lo worked six shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out five.
Opposition stars:  Lucas Goodgion pitched four shutout innings of relief, giving up two hits.
Key inning:  The third.  It was a scoreless tie.  A walk, a single, and an error scored the first run.  Back-to-back RBI doubles by Aderlin Mejia and Dereck Rodriguez made the score 3-0 and an RBI single by Bryan Haar scored a fourth run.
Other:  Each team had six hits, with no player on either team getting more than one.

DSL DIAMONDBACKS 13, TWINS 0 AT TWINS

Batting star:  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-2 with a double.
Pitching star:  Sebastian Perez threw two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Juan Heredia was 2-for-2 with two walks and a double, scoring three times.  Carlos Hernandez struck out six in five innings, allowing two hits and three walks.  Christian Cespedes struck out three in three innings, giving up a hit and a walk.
Key inning:  The second.  Leading 2-0, the Diamondbacks scored seven times to put the game away.  Ronny Mejias and Raul Garcia each hit a two-run double.  There were four walks, two wild pitches, and an error in the inning.

Games of August 19


SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 6, ROCHESTER 0 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Wilkin Ramirez was 4-for-4.  Chris Parmelee was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double.
Pitching stars:  Starter P. J. Walters worked three innings in his rehab start.  He struck out six, giving up three hits and two walks.  Luis Perdomo retired all five batters he faced, striking out two.
Opposition stars:  Corban Joseph was 3-for-3 with two walks and four RBIs.  John Maine went six innings, allowing four hits and two walks.  Chase Whitley threw two innings, giving up two hits.
Key inning:  The fourth.  In a scoreless tie, the Yankees scored three times.  A walk and a Melky Mesa double put S/WB in front.  A single and a walk loaded the bases and Joseph had a two-run single to give the Yankees all the runs they would need.
Other:  The Red Wings had six hits, all from only two players.

PORTLAND 7, NEW BRITAIN 4 IN PORTLAND

Batting stars:  Rene Tosoni was 2-for-4 with a home run, his third.  Chris Herrmann and Nathan Hanson were each 2-for-4.
Pitching stars:  Aaron Thompson and Blake Martin each worked a perfect inning.
Opposition star:  Xander Bogaerts was 2-for-4 with two doubles.
Key inning:  The eighth.  The Rock Cats had scored in the sixth and seventh to cut a 5-2 deficit to 5-4 when the Sea Dogs tallied twice to put the game away.  The damage was all done with two out.  A single, a walk, and Bogaerts’ two-run double made the score 7-4.
Other:  New Britain out-hit Portland 11-8.  The Sea Dogs were 5-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

PALM BEACH 6, FORT MYERS 4 IN PALM BEACH

Batting star:  Anderson Hidalgo was 2-for-3.
Pitching stars:  Kyle Gibson struck out six in four innings, allowing one run on three hits and no walks.  Madison Boer gave up one run on two hits in four innings, striking out three.
Opposition stars:  Chris Edmondson hit a grand slam.  Aidan Lucas struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings, walking two.
Key inning:  The sixth.  Trailing 6-1, the Miracle staged a comeback.  A double, a walk, and a Daniel Ortiz single made it 6-2.  With one out, Steven Liddle delivered an RBI single to make it 6-3.  A walk loaded the bases and a sacrifice fly made it 6-4.  Another walk loaded the bases again, but Lance Ray flied out to end the threat.
Other:  Hidalgo was ejected from the game in the sixth inning after being called out on strikes.

QUAD CITIES 5, BELOIT 3 IN QUAD CITIES

Batting stars:  Miguel Sano was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, his twenty-sixth.  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4 with a home run, his tenth.
Pitching star:  Zachary Jones struck out two in a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Matt Williams was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run.  Sam Gaviglio pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run on five hits and no walks.
Key inning:  The fifth.  The River Bandits led 2-1 and scored two insurance runs.  Four consecutive one-out singles plated the runs.  RBIs went to Stephen Piscotty and Anthony Melchionda.

ELIZABETHTON 3, KINGSPORT 2 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting star:  Kelvin Mention was 2-for-4.  Byron Buxton was 1-for-3 with a walk and scored twice.
Pitching star:  Brett Lee struck out eight in 5.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks.  Tyler Duffey struck out five in 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit.
Opposition stars:  Jorge Rivero was 2-for-4 with a home run.  Andrew Massie gave up one run on four hits and two walks in five innings.
Key inning:  The ninth.  The score was tied at two.  The Twins led off the inning with two walks.  A bunt was popped up for the first out, but an error then brought home the winning run.
Other:  Each team squandered plenty of chances.  They combined for 16 runners left on base and 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Games of August 18

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 10, ROCHESTER 3 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars: Wilkin Ramirez was 3-for-4 with a double. Chris Parmelee was 2-for-5. Brian Dinkelman was 0-for-0 with three walks.
Pitching stars: Daniel Turpen pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits. Deolis Guerra worked 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk.
Opposition stars: Corban Joseph was 3-for-6 with a three-run homer. Ramiro Pena was 3-for-5. Austin Romine was 2-for-5 with a double and a home run.
Key inning: The second. Leading 1-0, the Yankees scored three times. With two on and two out, Joseph hit a three-run homer to put Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ahead 4-0. That would be all the runs the Yankees needed.
Other: Each player in the Yankee lineup had at least one hit, and all but one of them had at least two…Brian Dozier left the game in the fourth inning with what was described as a lower body injury.

PORTLAND 9, NEW BRITAIN 2 IN PORTLAND (COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

Batting stars: Aaron Hicks was 2-for-4 with a triple. Rene Tosoni was 2-for-4.
Pitching star: Starter Luke French pitched three innings before the suspension, giving up two hits and no walks.
Opposition stars: Jeremy Hazelbaker was 2-for-4 with a double. Marquez Smith was 2-for-3 with a walk. Stolmy Pimentel struck out four in four innings before the suspension, allowing a hit and a walk.
Key inning: The seventh. The Rock Cats trailed 3-1 when they scored on a Nathan Hanson single and a James Beresford double to make it 3-2. The Sea Dogs responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, four consecutive singles, a Hazelbaker triple, and a sacrifice fly did the damage.

NEW BRITAIN 4, PORTLAND 2 IN PORTLAND (REGULARLY SCHEDULED GAME—8 INNINGS—SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars: Oswaldo Arcia was 2-for-4 with a triple. Chris Colabello was 2-for-4 with a double.
Pitching star: Steven Hirschfeld went seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits and no walks.
Opposition stars: Xander Bogaerts was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run. Peter Hissey was 2-for-3 with a double.
Key inning: The eighth. The SeaDogs had tied the game at two in the seventh. Shawn Roof led off with a single, but had only advanced to second with two out. Arcia then tripled in the go-ahead run and Colabello doubled in an insurance run.

FORT MYERS 6, PALM BEACH 1 IN PALM BEACH

Batting stars: Daniel “Danny” Rams was 3-for-5. Daniel Santana was 2-for-5 with a walk and a home run, his sixth. Josmil Pinto was 2-for-4 with two walks.
Pitching stars: Pat Dean allowed one run on three hits and a walk in five innings, striking out four. Ricky Bowen gave up only a walk in two shutout innings.
Opposition stars: None.
Key inning: The eighth. The Miracle led 3-1. Santana led off the inning with a home run. With one out, a pair of walks and RBI singles by Rams and Jonathan Goncalves put the game away.

QUAD CITIES 6, BELOIT 4 IN QUAD CITIES

Batting star: Kennys Vargas was 2-for-3 with a walk. Nate Roberts was 2-for-5. Eddie Rosario hit a two-run homer, his tenth.
Pitching star: Tim Atherton struck out five in 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and two walks.
Opposition stars: Nicholas Longmire was 3-for-4 with a walk and a double. Tyrell Jenkins struck out seven in five innings, giving up one run on four hits and three walks. Anthony Garcia walked and hit a three-run homer.
Key inning: The sixth. Leading 2-1, the River Bandits struck for four. Two singles and a three-run home r by Garcia led off the inning. A single, two walks, and a balk scored the fourth run.

KINGSPORT 8, ELIZABETHTON 4 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars: D. J. Hicks was 2-for-3 with two walks, a double, and a home run, his third. Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4.
Pitching stars: Joshua Burris struck out three in 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit. Tyler Herr gave up two hits in two shutout innings.
Opposition stars: Yeixon Ruiz was 3-for-4 with a double. Maikis De La Cruz was 2-for-5 and drove in three. Akeel Morris struck out five in three shutout innings.
Key inning: The ninth. Leading 5-4, the Mets tallied three times to take command. Ruiz drove in one with a double and De La Cruz drove in two with a single.

GCL TWINS 2, RED SOX 1 AT TWINS

Batting stars: None.
Pitching stars: Starter Austin Malinowski struck out five in four shutout innings, allowing three hits and no walks. Gerardo Ramirez walked two in two shutout innings.
Opposition stars: Jose Colorado was 2-for-4 with a double. Scott Swinson and Ricardo Betancourt each threw two shutout innings.
Key inning: The fourth. It was a scoreless tie. A walk, a single, and a fielder’s choice on which no one was retired loaded the bases with none out, and an error scored two runs for the Twins.

DSL ROCKIES 7, TWINS 2 AT ROCKIES

Batting star: Junior Boni was 2-for-4 with a double.
Pitching stars: Jhon Silva and Ezequiel Zarzuela each worked a scoreless inning, with Silva giving up a walk and Zarzuela allowing two hits.
Opposition stars: Henry Garcia was 2-for-5 with two doubles. Wilson Soriano was 2-for-4 with a double. Angel Lezama struck out eight in seven innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk.
Key inning: The seventh. The Twins had cut a 3-0 deficit to 3-2 when the Rockies scored four runs. Emerson Jimenez and Miguel Dilone each had RBI singles and Garcia had an RBI double. The other run scored on an error.

Games of August 17


INDIANAPOLIS 4, ROCHESTER 3 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Tsuyoshi Niskioka was 4-for-5.  Eduardo Escobar was 3-for-4 with a double.  Chris Parmelee was 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run, his sixteenth.
Pitching stars:  Caleb Theilbar and Kyle Waldrop each worked a scoreless inning.  Thielbar gave up a hit and a walk and Waldrop allowed a walk.
Opposition stars:  Brock Holt was 3-for-5 with a double and a home run, driving in three.  Dallas McPherson was 2-for-4.  Evan Meek struck out four in two shutout innings.
Key inning:  The fifth.  The Red Wings trailed 4-3.  A single and two walks (including an intentional walk to Parmelee) loaded the bases with one out.  Clete Thomas hit into a forceout at home and Evan Bigley popped up.  Rochester did not get a runner to third base again.
Other:  The Red Wings out-hit the Indians 11-8.  Indianapolis scored all four of its runs in the second inning.

NEW BRITAIN AT PORTLAND

The game was suspended after three and a half innings.  There was no score, and the Rock Cats had not gotten a hit yet.  The game will be completed Saturday before the regularly scheduled game.

FORT MYERS 9, PALM BEACH 4 AT PALM BEACH

Batting stars:  Josmil Pinto was 4-for-5 with two doubles and a home run, his twelfth.  Jonathan Goncalves was 2-for-3 with two doubles, driving in three.  Daniel Ortiz was 1-for-3 with two walks.
Pitching star:  Tom Stuifbergen gave up three runs on nine hits and a walk in seven innings.
Opposition stars:  Cody Stanley was 3-for-5 with a home run.  Ronny Gil was 3-for-4 with a double.  Danny Miranda struck out three in three shutout innings.
Key inning:  The eighth.  The Miracle had taken a 4-0 lead in the second, but the Cardinals had closed to 4-3.  Fort Myers opened the inning with two singles, two walks, and an error, making the score 6-3 and leaving the bases loaded with none out.  With one out, a hit batsman forced in a run and another error allowed two more runs to score, giving the Miracle a 9-3 advantage.
Other:  The Cardinals out-hit the Miracle 11-10, but out-errored them 4-0.

WISCONSIN 5, BELOIT 2 IN BELOIT

Batting stars:  Matthew Koch was 2-for-4 with a double.  Nate Roberts was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Miguel Sano was 1-for-3 with a home run, his twenty-fifth.
Pitching star:  Taylor Rogers allowed one run on four hits in three innings while striking out three.
Opposition stars:  Gregory Hopkins was 2-for-5 with two doubles.  Michael Garza was 2-for-5 with a double.  Chad Pierce pitched five shutout innings, giving up four hits and three walks.
Key inning:  The fourth.  The Timber Rattlers scored one in the first, but it had stayed 1-0.  A walk and doubles by Hopkins and Garza plated two runs to make the score 3-0, which was all the runs Wisconsin would need.
Other:  The Snappers stranded nine runners and were 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

ELIZABETHTON 5, KINGSPORT 1 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Rory Rhodes was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, his fifth.  Adam Walker was 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run, his fourteenth.
Pitching stars:  Jose Berrios struck out eleven in five shutout innings, allowing two hits and no walks.  Travis Huber struck out three in two perfect innings.
Opposition star:  Maikis De La Cruz was 2-for-4.
Key inning:  The second.  It was a scoreless tie.  Following an error, Rhodes doubled in a run, took third on a ground out, and scored on a sacrifice fly to give the Twins a 2-0 lead.
Other:  Kingsport out-hit Elizabethton 6-5.

GCL RED SOX 5, TWINS 1 AT RED SOX

Batting star:  Aderlin Mejia was 3-for-5.
Pitching star:  Randy Rosario worked five shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks.
Opposition star:  Jonathan Aro pitched five innings of relief, allowing one run on four hits and no walks.
Key inning:  The seventh.  The Twins led 1-0 when the Red Sox broke through for five runs.  Two walks and a single scored the first run; a wild pitch scored the second.  A walk and a sacrifice fly plated the third run.  Mike Meyers then produced and RBI double and Jose Colorado delivered an RBI single to make it 5-1.

DSL TWINS 8, ROCKIES 2 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Carlos Martinez was 2-for-4 with two doubles.  Eddy Concepcion and Junior Boni were each 2-for-4 with a walk.
Pitching star:  Junior Subero worked five shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.  Edgar Martinez struck out three in two shutout innings, allowing one hit.
Opposition star:  Wilson Soriano was 2-for-4.
Key inning:  The sixth.  The Twins led 3-0 when the Rockies scored two in the top of the inning on three singles and an infield out.  The Twins came back to score four in the bottom of the inning.  A single, a hit batsman, and a walk loaded the bases with one out.  This was followed by four consecutive bases-loaded walks to give the Twins a 7-2 lead.

Where They Stand: Through Games of August 16


Rochester is 65-61, fourth in the IL North, 13 games behind Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.  They are tied for third in the wild card standings, 3.5 games behind Pawtucket.  The Red Wings have won three consecutive games and are 6-4 in their last ten games.
New Britain is 67-57, second in the EL East, 5 games behind Trenton.  They are 1 game ahead of Reading for the last playoff spot in the division.  The Rock Cats have lost one consecutive game and are 5-5 in their last ten games.
Fort Myers is 51-69 overall, 23-30 in the second half, fifth in the FSL South, 5.5 games behind St. Lucie.  They are 5 games behind Jupiter for the last playoff spot in the division.  The Miracle has lost five consecutive games and is 4-6 in its last ten games.
Beloit is 67-55 overall, 28-24 in the second half, third in the ML Western, 3 games behind Clinton.  They will be in the playoffs due to their second place finish in the first half.  The Snappers have lost one consecutive game and are 8-2 in their last ten games.
Elizabethton is 37-16, first in the AL West, 8.5 games ahead of Johnson City and Greeneville.  The Twins have lost one consecutive game and are 8-2 in their last ten games.  The Appalachian League season ends August 28.
The GCL Twins are 27-25, second in the GCL South, 2 games behind the Red Sox.  They are third in the wild card standings, 4 games behind the Pirates.  The Twins have lost two consecutive games and are 2-8 in their last ten games.  The GCL season ends August 25.
The DSL Twins are 28-35, sixth in the B. C. B. C., 9 games behind the Diamondbacks.  They are twenty-second in the wild card standings, 10.5 games behind the Pirates1 and the Rangers.  The Twins have lost three consecutive games and are 3-7 in their last ten games.  The DSL season ends August 25.

ROCHESTER 2, INDIANAPOLIS 1 IN ROCHESTER (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Eduardo Escobar was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Clete Thomas was 2-for-4.  Tsuyoshi Nishioka was 2-for-5.
Pitching stars:  Pedro Hernandez worked seven strong innings, giving up one run on six hits and a walk.  Luis Perdomo threw three shutout innings, allowing two hits and no walks.
Opposition star:  Rick VandenHurk allowed one run on seven hits in no walks in eight innings.
Key inning:  The tenth.  It was a 1-1 tie.  With two out, Brian Dozier doubled.  Chris Parmelee was intentionally walked, but Wilkin Ramirez singled to center to drive in the winning run.

RICHMOND 3, NEW BRITAIN 1 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting star:  Aaron Hicks was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double.
Pitching stars:  Matthew Hauser and Edgar Ibarra each pitched two shutout innings.  Hauser allowed only a walk, while Ibarra gave up two hits and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Gary Brown was 3-for-4.  Mark Minicozzi was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Daryl Maday struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up just one hit.
Key inning:  The third.  In a 1-1 tie, the Flying Squirrels scored twice.  With one out, Juan Perez and Minicozzi hit back-to-back doubles and Johnny Monell hit an RBI single.  In the bottom of the inning, the Rock Cats had runners on first and second with one out, but a strikeout/throw out double play ended the threat.

FORT MYERS 12, JUPITER 7 IN JUPITER

Batting stars:  Lance Ray was 3-for-5 with a double.  Daniel Santana was 2-for-4 with a walk.
Pitching star:  Carl Pavano, making a rehab start, worked three shutout innings, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out two.
Opposition stars:  Mark Canha was 3-for-4.  Marcell Ozuna was 3-for-5 with a double.  Donnie Murphy was 2-for-5 with a triple.
Key inning:  The fourth.  The Miracle led 7-0 when the Hammerheads exploded for eleven runs for the second straight day.  The inning featured six singles, two doubles, and four walks.  Three of the walks were with the bases loaded, and came to consecutive batters.
Other:  There were only three innings in which runs were scored.  Fort Myers scored all seven of its runs in the first.  Jupiter scored eleven of its twelve runs in the fourth, adding one in the sixth.

WISCONSIN 6, BELOIT 5 IN BELOIT

Batting stars:  Drew Leachman was 3-for-5 with a double.  Eddie Rosario was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Nate Roberts was 2-for-5.
Pitching star:  Steven Gruver tossed two shutout innings, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Cameron Garfield was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, driving in three.  Brandon Macias was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk.
Key inning:  The ninth.  The Snappers trailed 6-2.  A single and a walk put two on with one out.  Miguel Sano doubled to make it 6-3.  A walk loaded the bases and Leachman doubled to make the score 6-5.  An intentional walk loaded the bases, but Matthew Koch and Tyler Grimes struck out to end the game.
Other:  Beloit stranded thirteen runners and went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

ELIZABETHTON 7, BLUEFIELD 3 IN BLUEFIELD (GAME 1—SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Candido Pimentel was 2-for-4 with a double.  Adam Walker was 1-for-3 with a home run, his thirteenth.
Pitching star:  Starter Hudson Boyd went four innings, allowing one run on three hits and a walk.
Opposition star:  Dickie Thon was 2-for-2 with a double.
Key inning:  The second.  The Twins led 1-0.  Rory Rhodes opened the inning with a single and Byron Buxton followed with a double to put runners on second and third with none out.  A sacrifice fly and an infield out scored both runners to make the score 3-0.

BLUEFIELD 6, ELIZABETHTON 4 IN BLUEFIELD (GAME 2—SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with a double.
Pitching stars:  None.
Opposition stars:  None.
Key inning:  The fifth.  The Twins had scored twice in the fourth to tie it at three.  The Blue Jays then used four singles and an error to score three times.  Eric Arce drove in two with a single and Nico Taylor drove in one with a single.
Other:  It sounds strange to say there were really no stars, but that’s the way it was.  Kepler was the only player with more than one hit.  No one went more than 1.1 scoreless innings.  It was just one of those games.

GCL RAYS 3, TWINS 2 AT RAYS (10 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Logan Wade was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, and a home run, his first.
Pitching star:  Starter Andre Martinez worked four shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks.
Opposition stars:  Geisel De La Cruz pitched five shutout innings, striking out five while allowing three hits and a walk.  Yoel Araujo was 2-for-3 with a double.  Jiminson Natera was 2-for-3.
Key inning:  The tenth.  It was a 2-2 tie.  Natera led off the inning with a single, took second on a bunt, went to third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch to win the game.

DSL REDS 3, TWINS 2 AT TWINS

Batting star:  Adonis Pacheco was 2-for-2 with two walks and a double.
Pitching star:  Damian Defrank went five innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk.  Jose Ramirez struck out three in two shutout innings, allowing one hit.
Opposition star:  Ronald Bueno was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run.
Key inning:  The ninth.  The score was tied at one.  Bueno led off the ninth with a home run to give the Reds the lead.  Kevin W. Garcia then singled, stole second, went to third on a ground out, and scored on another ground out to give the Reds an insurance run.  In the bottom of the inning, a single and a walk put two on with two out and Junior Boni singled to make the score 3-2.  A wild pitch put runners on second and third, but a ground out ended the game.

Games of August 15


ROCHESTER 6, INDIANAPOLIS 2 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Wilkin Ramirez was 2-for-3 with a double.  Clete Thomas was 2-for-4 with a double.  Evan Bigley hit a three-run homer, his third.
Pitching star:  Esmerling Vasquez struck out ten in seven shutout innings.  He gave up four hits and two walks.
Opposition stars:  Brock Holt was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Matt Hague was 2-for-4 with a home run.  Justin Wilson allowed two runs on five hits and a walk in six innings.
Key inning:  The seventh.  The Red Wings led 2-0, a lead they’d held since the first.  A hit batsman and an error put two runners on for Bigley’s homer, giving Rochester a 5-0 advantage.
Other:  Vasquez has now thrown 18.2 consecutive scoreless innings.  Deolis Guerra had a “perfect” perfect inning in the eighth, striking out the side on nine pitches.

NEW BRITAIN 4, RICHMOND 3 IN NEW BRITAIN (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Oswaldo Arcia was 3-for-5.  Aaron Hicks was 2-for-5.  Deibinson Romero hit a three-run homer, his eighteenth.
Pitching stars:  B. J. Hermsen pitched five innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks.  Jose Gonzalez struck out three in two perfect innings.
Opposition stars:  Justin Fitzgerald worked eight shutout innings, allowing four hits and no walks.  Johnny Monell was 2-for-4 with a double.
Key inning:  The ninth.  The Rock Cats trailed 3-0 and had two out with none on.  Chris Colabello and Joe Benson singled and Romero hit a three-run homer to tie the game.
Other:  Arcia hit a bases-loaded single in the tenth to end the game.

JUPITER 16, FORT MYERS 2 IN JUPITER

Batting star:  Lance Ray was 2-for-4 with a double.
Pitching star:  Matthew Summers gave up an unearned run in four innings, allowing three hits and four walks.  Ricky Bowen struck out two in a perfect inning.
Opposition stars:  Zach Neal struck out eight in six shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks.  Marcell Ozuna was 3-for-4 with a walk and a home run, scoring three times.  Donnie Murphy was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, driving in five.
Key inning:  The fifth.  Leading 1-0, the Hammerheads hammered out eleven runs.  Jupiter had nine hits and two walks.  The inning included a three-run homer by Murphy and a two-run homer by Ozuna.

BELOIT 13, WISCONSIN 10 IN BELOIT

Batting stars:  Eddie Rosario was 2-for-5 with a double and a home run, his ninth.  Drew Leachman was 2-for-3 with two walks and scored three times.  Stephen Wickens was 2-for-2 with two walks.
Pitching stars:  None.
Opposition stars:  Rafael Neda was 3-for-4.  Chadwin Stang was 2-for-4 with a double and a homer, driving in four.  Yadiel Rivera was 2-for-4 with a home run.
Key inning:  The eighth.  In a see-saw game, the Snappers led 8-7 when Rivera hit a two-run homer to put the Timber Rattlers back in front 9-8.  The Snappers stormed right back in the bottom of the inning.  Rosario led off with a home run to tie the score.  Miguel Sano singled and Leachman drew a walk to put two on with one out.  Wickens singled to put Beloit ahead 10-9 and Matthew Koch hit a three-run homer to give the Snappers a 13-9 advantage.
Other:  Beloit drew nine walks in the game.

ELIZABETHTON AT BLUEFIELD

Rained out.  Will be made up as part of a doubleheader tonight.

GCL RAYS 3, TWINS 2 AT TWINS

Batting star:  Logan Wade was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, and a triple.
Pitching star:  Josue Montanez struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits.
Opposition stars:  Armando Araiza was 3-for-4.  Yoel Araujo was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.  Leopoldo Correa was 2-for-4 with a triple.
Key inning:  The eighth.  In a 2-2 tie, the Rays tallied once to take the lead.  A hit batsman and an RBI double by Araujo produced the run.

DSL REDS 6, TWINS 2 AT REDS

Batting star:  Jonatan Ynojoso was 2-for-3 with a walk.
Pitching star:  Reyson Zoquiel did not allow a hit in three shutout innings.  He walked three and struck out five.
Opposition stars:  Eury Cantalizo worked six shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out five.  Kevin W Garcia was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double.
Key inning:  The seventh.  The Reds led 3-0.  In the top of the inning, the Twins scored two runs without a hit, getting the benefit of two walks, an error, a wild pitch, and a ground out.  In the bottom of the inning, the Reds got the runs right back on two walks, two wild pitches, and two singles.
