Games of July 2

Oswaldo Arcia is coming around.  No offense for Fort Myers.  Strong pitching by Ethan Mildren.  Alex Robinson strikes out all six men he faces.  Trey Cabbage delivers a walkoff single,  Danny Feliz goes five hitless innings.

LEHIGH VALLEY 7, ROCHESTER 1 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

Batting stars:  Aaron Hicks was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Oswaldo Arcia was 2-for-5 with a double.  Doug Bernier was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Pitching star:  Greg Peavey struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks.
Opposition stars:  Chase d'Arnaud was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Jordan Danks was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  David Buchanan pitched 6.1 innings, allowing one run on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
The game:  It was scoreless until the fifth, when a single a double, and a single produced two IronPigs runs.  In the sixth, d'Arnaud hit a three-run double to cap a four-run inning that gave the IronPigs a 6-0 lead and put the game out of reach.  The lone Red Wings run came in the seventh on a Hicks single.  The Red Wings had the bases loaded with one out, but a double play ended the inning.  They again loaded the bases in the eighth, but again did not score.
Of note:  James Beresford was 0-for-5.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4.  Danny Ortiz was 0-for-3.

BIRMINGHAM AT CHATTANOOGA

A doubleheader was rained out.  The teams will try to play two games today.
PALM BEACH 1, FORT MYERS 0 IN PALM BEACH
Batting stars:  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-3 with a double.  Engelb Vielma was 1-for-4 with a double.
Pitching stars:  Chih-Wei Hu pitched five innings, giving up one run on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Nick Burdi retired all six men he faced, striking out four.  Dallas Gallant pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Corey Littrell pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Derek Gibson was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
The game:  The Miracle got a one-out double in each of the first two innings but did not advance either man past second.  The game's lone run came in the fourth when Collin Radack led off with a walk, took second on a ground out, and scored on Gibson's double.  The Miracle did not advance a man past first after the second.
Of note:  Zach Granite was 0-for-4.  Alex Swim was 1-for-3.  Marcus Knecht was 1-for-3.

CEDAR RAPIDS 8, BURLINGTON 2 IN BURLINGTON

Batting stars:  Max Murphy was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring three times and driving in one.  Rafael P. Valera was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.  Jorge Fernandez was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching star:  Ethan Mildren pitched seven innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Opposition stars:  Zachary Houchins was 3-for-4 with a home run (his seventh) and two runs.  Alex Klonowski struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.
The game:  Doubles by Alex Real and Fernandez keyed a three-run second that put the Kernels up 3-0.  Valera's two-run single capped a three-run second that made it 6-0.  The lead was never less than six after that.
Of note:  Tanner English was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Edgar Corcino was 2-for-4 with a double.  Real was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.

GREENEVILLE 8, ELIZABETHTON 2 IN GREENEVILLE

Batting stars:  Manuel Guzman was 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4 with a walk.
Pitching star:  Alex Robinson pitched two perfect perfect innings, striking out all six men he faced.
Opposition stars:  Osvaldo Duarte was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring twice.  Randy Cesar was 1-for-4 with a run and three RBIs.  Alex Winkelman struck out six in three shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk.
The game:  Three Twins errors in the first inning led to three Astros runs and a 3-0 lead.  The Twins chipped away, getting a run in the third and another in the fourth, but left the bases loaded in both innings as well as in the fifth, when they did not score.  It remained 3-2 until the eighth, when a five-run inning put the game out of reach.  Cesar and Rodrigo Ayarza each had a two-run single in the inning.  The Twins stranded eleven and went 1-for-12 with men in scoring position.
Of note:  Amaurys Minier was 0-for-5.  Austin Diemer was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Andro Cutera pitched four innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

GCL TWINS 2, GCL RAYS 1 AT TWINS (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Lean Marrero was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Trey Cabbage was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Kerby Camacho was 1-for-2 with two walks.
Pitching stars:  Lachlan Wells struck out five in four innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits and two walks.  Moises Gomez pitched two shutout innings, giving up two walks with one strikeout.  Matz Schutte pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Jaime Ayende was 2-for-4.  Orlando Romero pitched five innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
The game:  There was no score until the fifth, when the Rays got on the board on a walk, a passed ball, and two wild pitches.  The Twins evened the score in the seventh on a hit batsman, a bunt, a wild pitch, and Marrero's RBI single.  In the tenth, two singles and a double steal put men on second and third and Cabbage didn't leaf them there, singling to bring home the winning run.
Of note:  Jorge Andrade was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Brian Olson was 0-for-3 with a run.

DSL TWINS 3, DSL RED SOX1 1 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Gorge Munoz was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Edwin Franco was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.  Jean Carlos Arias was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Danny Feliz pitched five hitless, scoreless innings, giving up two walks with three strikeouts.  Randolph Perez struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up three hits.  Luis Gil struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up three walks.
Opposition stars:  Luis Colmenares pitched four shutout innings, giving up no hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  Willis Figueroa was 0-for-1 with three walks.  Eddy Reynoso was 1-for-3 with a walk.
The game:  Munoz tripled and scored in the first, Franco singled in a run in the second, and a wild pitch brought home a run in the third.  That would be all the Twins would need, as the Red Sox1 did not get a hit until the seventh and did not score until the ninth, when a single-plus-error put a man on third and a ground out scored him.  They did not get the tying run on base.
Of note:  Emmanuel Morel was 0-for-4.  Jorge Parra was 1-for-4.  Edgar Herrera was 0-for-1 with two walks.

Where They Stand: Through Games of July 1, 2015

A look at the standings.
Minnesota is 41-37, second in the American League Central, 4.5 games behind Kansas City.  They currently hold the second wild card spot, one percentage point ahead of Tampa Bay and Toronto.  The Twins are 4-6 in their last ten games and lost their most recent game.
Rochester is 43-36, first in the International League North, a half game ahead of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.  The Red Wings are 7-3 in their last ten games and have won their last five games.
Chattanooga finished first in the first half in the Southern League North with a record of 43-25.  They led Tennessee by 4.5 games.  In the second half, the Lookouts are 1-4, fifth in the Southern League North, three games behind Montgomery.  They are 5-5 in their last ten games and lost their most recent game.
Fort Myers finished second in the first half in the Florida State League South with a record of 38-32.  They were seven games behind Charlotte.  In the second half, the Miracle is 5-2, first in the Florida State League South, one game ahead of Bradenton, Palm Beach, and St. Lucie.  They are 8-2 in their last ten games and have won two consecutive games.
Cedar Rapids finished second in the first half in the Midwest League Western with a record of 41-29.  They were five games behind Quad Cities.  In the second half, the Kernels are 4-3, tied for second in the Midwest League Western, two games behind Kane County.  They are 5-5 in their last ten games and have won three consecutive games.
Elizabethton is 6-3, first in the Appalachian League West, one game ahead of Greeneville and Kingsport.  The Twins have won four consecutive games.
The GCL Twins are 5-4, second in the Gulf Coast League South, four games behind the GCL Red Sox.  The Twins lost their most recent game.
The DSL Twins are 13-15, tied for sixth in the Dominican Summer League Boca Chica South, seven games behind the DSL Giants and the DSL Yankees1.  The Twins are 2-8 in their last ten games and have lost five consecutive games.

Games of July 1

A big day for Oswaldo Arcia.  Aaron Slegers pitches well.  Felix Jorge pitches better.  Amaurys Minier delivers a walkoff.  The GCL Twins and the DSL Twins each lose late.

ROCHESTER 8, PAWTUCKET 4 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Oswaldo Arcia was 4-for-5 with a home run (his second), scoring twice and driving in three.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Aaron Hicks was 3-for-5 with two runs.
Pitching stars:  Pat Dean pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Cole Johnson pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Jeff Bianchi was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Rusney Castillo was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Travis Shaw was 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.
The game;  Shaw's two-run single in the third put the Red Sox up 3-2.  Arcia homered in the bottom of the third to tie it 3-3.  In the fifth, the Red Wings were helped out by an error, a passed ball, and a wild pitch, scoring three times to take a 6-3 lead.  They added two in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Of note:  Argenis Diaz was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs.  Jose Martinez was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  James Beresford was 2-for-5.

FORT MYERS 6, PALM BEACH 2 IN PALM BEACH

Batting stars:  Alex Swim was 3-for-5 with a run and three RBIs.  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Aderlin Mejia was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Aaron Slegers struck out seven in seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and no walks.  Brian Gilbert pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one walk.  Tyler Jay pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Blake Drake, who has an outstanding name for a ballplayer, was 2-for-3 with a triple and a double, scoring once.  Brett Wiley was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Tyler Melling pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and no walks with two strikeouts.
The game:  Swim singled in a run in the first inning.  The Miracle then took control with a four-run third, getting a double and five singles.  The Cardinals got single runs in the fourth and seventh to cut the lead to 5-2, but got no closer than that.
Of note:  Zach Granite was 1-for-4 with two runs.  Marcus Knecht was 1-for-5 with a run.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, WISCONSIN 2 IN WISCONSIN

Batting stars:  Alex Real was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Max Murphy was 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Felix Jorge pitched six shutout innings, giving up four hits and one walk with three strikeouts.  Trevor Hildenberger pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Brandon Diaz was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, driving in one.  Dustin DeMuth was 2-for-4 with a double.  Zach Hirsch pitched six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks with five strikeouts.
The game:  Murphy tripled in a run in the second and Real singled one home in the sixth to give the Kernels a 2-0 lead.  In the eighth, Diaz drove home two runs on a double-plus-error to tie the score 2-2.  In the ninth, Rafael P. Valera delivered a two-out RBI single to put the Kernels in the lead to stay.  The Timber Rattlers went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Of note:  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-4 with a run.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4.

ELIZABETHTON 7, BRISTOL 4 IN ELIZABETHTON (13 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Amaurys Minier was 2-for-3 with a home run (his second) and four RBIs.  Ariel Montesino was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Daniel Kihle was 2-for-3 with two runs.
Pitching stars:  Miles Nordgren pitched five innings, somehow only giving up one run on eight hits and three walks with one strikeout.  Logan Lombana pitched two shutout innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.  Kuo Hua Lo struck out six in four shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.
Opposition stars:  Trae Arbet was 3-for-7 with two doubles and two runs.  Carlos Munoz was 2-for-5 with a double.  Sandy Santos was 2-for-6 with an RBI.
The game:  An error and two wild pitches led to two Twins runs in the third and a 2-1 lead.  It was 3-1 after eight, but the Pirates rallied for three in the ninth to go up 4-3.  Minier singled in a run in the ninth to tie it 4-4.  Neither team threatened in extra innings until the thirteenth, when the Twins opened the inning with a pair of singles and Minier delivered a walkoff three-run homer.
Of note:  Manuel Guzman was 1-for-5 with a walk and two RBIs.  LeMonte Wade was 0-for-5.  Tyler Kuresa was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Kamran Young was 1-for-5 with a walk and a run.  Nelson Molina was 0-for-2.

GCL RAYS 10, GCL TWINS 8 AT RAYS

Batting stars:  Trey Cabbage was 2-for-5 with a run and four RBIs.  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs.  Robert Molina was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Hector Lujan struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Brandon Poulson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk with one strikeout.  Max Cordy pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Miguel Hernandez was 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in two.  Andrew Velazquez was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in two.  Ty Morrison was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.
The game:  Cabbage had a two-run single in a five-run second that put the Twins ahead 5-2.  The lead went to 7-2 in the third, but the Rays came back with three in the fourth to make it 7-5.  The Twins got one in the seventh, but in the eighth the Rays scored once and had the bases loaded with two out.  Velazquez then hit a single-plus-error-plus-error, circling the bases and bringing home four runs.  The Twins went down in order in the ninth.
Of note:  Luis Arraez was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Eduardo Del Rosario struck out five in four innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk.

DSL METS1 9, DSL TWINS 7 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Emmanuel Morel was 1-for-2 with two walks, scoring twice.  Jean Carlos Arias was 1-for-2 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Antonio Tovar was 1-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching stars:  Juan Herrera pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Luis Bellorin pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and two walks with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Rafael Valdez was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs.  Hanser Ortiz was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Edy Gil was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.
The game:  The Twins scored three times in the third without a hit, getting three walks, a hit batsman, an error, a wild pitch, and a passed ball.  Valdez hit a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 3-2, but Edgar Herrera singled in a run in the bottom of the sixth to put the Twins back up 4-2.  The Mets1 scored twice in the eighth to tie it, but the Twins came back again, getting a two-run single-plus-error from Francisco Hernandez in a three-run inning that gave them a 7-4 advantage.  In the ninth, however, the Mets1 scored five times to take a 9-7 lead.  Ortiz had a two-run double to drive in the go-ahead runs.  This time the Twins could not answer, going down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Of note:  Herrera was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Hernandez was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Pitcher:  Taylor Rogers was 3-1, 2.40, 1.04 WHIP with 7 walks and 24 strikeouts in 41.1 innings.  For the season he is 7-4, 2.96, 1.21 WHIP with 27 walks and 71 strikeouts in 103.1 innings.

Games of June 30

Ervin Santana is as ready as he's going to be.  A good game for Stephen Gonsalves.  Luke Westphal pitches well, too.  Alexis Tapia may have pitched the best of all.  Kerby Camacho is macho for the GCL Twins.  The DSL Twins are blown out.

ROCHESTER 1, PAWTUCKET 0 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Jose Martinez was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.  Oswaldo Arcia was 1-for-3 with a double.
Pitching stars:  Ervin Santana pitched eight shutout innings, giving up five hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  Michael Tonkin pitched a perfect ninth with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Jonathan Roof was 2-for-3.  Luis Martinez was 2-for-3.  Henry Owens pitched seven innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
The game:  It was scoreless through six, and in fact the Red Wings did not have a hit through six, but when they got one in the seventh they made it count.  Martinez led off with a double, took third on a ground out, and scored on a sacrifice fly for the game's only run.  The only time the Red Sox got a man past first base was in the eighth, when a pair of two-out singles put men on first and second.
Of note:  Aaron Hicks was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Danny Ortiz was 0-for-2 with an RBI.  Eric Fryer was 0-for-3.

CHATTANOOGA LOOKOUTS

FORT MYERS 2, DUNEDIN 1 IN DUNEDIN

Pitching stars:  Stephen Gonsalves struck out five in five shutout innings, giving up five hits and two walks.  Todd Van Steensel pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and three walks with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Anthony Alford was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Rowdy Tellez was 1-for-2 with two walks.  Murphy Smith struck out seven in 5.2 innings, allowing two unearned runs on six hits and a walk.
The game:  Swim singled in a run in the first.  In the fifth, Vielma singled and scored on a stolen base-plus-error-plus-error.  The Blue Jays threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.  The Blue Jays got their lone run in the eighth on a single and three walks, but again left the bases full.  They put men on first and third with two out in the ninth, but a foul out ended the game.
Of note:  Swim was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, WISCONSIN 2 IN WISCONSIN

Batting stars:  Brian Navaretto was 3-for-4 with an RBI.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Zack Larson was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Pitching stars:  Luke Westphal struck out five in five innings, giving up one run on one hit and two walks.  Randy LeBlanc pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit with two strikeouts.
Opposition stars:  Elvis Rubio was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.  Brandon Diaz was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run.  David Burkhalter struck out five in four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk.
The game:  Each team scored one in the first.  Navaretto singled in a run in the second to make it 2-1 and it stayed there until the seventh, when Gordon doubled and scored.  In the Timber Rattlers ninth, a hit batsman and a walk put two on and a pair of productive outs cut the lead to 3-2 and put the tying run on third base, but a foul out ended the game.

Batting stars:  Austin Diemer was 2-for-3 with a triple and a double, scoring once.  Nelson Molina was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer.
Pitching stars:  Alexis Tapia struck out six in six shutout innings, giving up one run on two hits and no walks.  Samuel Clay struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Jose Abreu struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars:  Carlos Munoz was 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk.  Christopher De Leon struck out three in two perfect innings.
The game:  Minier hit a two-run single to cap a three-run third that gave the Twins all the runs they would need.  The lone Pirates run came on Munoz' two-out homer in the fourth, their first hit of the game.  The only other Pirate threat came in the seventh, when a walk and an error put two on with none out.
Of note:  Manuel Guzman was 1-for-4 with a run.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4.  Tyler Kuresa was 0-for-3.  A. J. Murray was 0-for-3.  Kamran Young was 0-for-3.

GCL TWINS 7, GCL RAYS 3 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Jermaine Palacios was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, scoring once.  Kerby Camacho was 1-for-4 with a grand slam.  Roberto Gonzalez was 0-for-2 with two walks and two runs.
Pitching stars:  Miguel Gonzalez struck out four in three perfect innings.  Matt Schutte pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk with one strikeout.  Callan Pearce pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.
Opposition stars:  Devin Davis was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.  Juan Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Herminio Germoso pitched two shutout innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout.
The game:  It was 1-1 after three.  The Rays got two in the top of the fourth, but an error plated two in the bottom of the fourth to tie it 3-3.  It remained tied until the eighth, when Camacho hit a grand slam to put the Twins in front.  The Rays went down in order in the ninth and in fact had their last twelve batters retired.
Of note:  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-3 with a walk.  John Hayman was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Jose Martinez pitched four innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks with one strikeout.

DSL METS1 17, DSL TWINS 5 AT METS1

Batting stars:  Jean Carlos Arias was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run.  Zaino Henriquez was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs.  Edwin Franco was 1-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.
Pitching stars:  None.
Opposition stars:  Hanser Ortiz was 6-for-6 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in five.  Wagner Lagrange was 4-for-4 with four runs and an RBI.  Richard Reina pitched five shutout innings, allowing three hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
The game:  A five-run second put the Mets1 up 6-0 and gave them control of the game early.  The lead grew to 12-0 before the Twins finally got on the board with two in the seventh.
Of note:  Jorge Parra was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.  Jose Ramirez pitched three innings, giving up six runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
